    • Thanks for the example. I guess i was not as clear as I should have been about the codes. For each name, there will likely be seveal codes repeated and I need to be able to count how many of each code for each name. In other words, for Smith there might be 6 “SE 09’s” and 4 “CI 03’s”, and so on.

I am working on something similar and eagerly look forward to the answer to this.

You can put a graphic or picture in the header with enough carriage returns or line feeds to place the picture in the vertical center of the page You will need to format the picture first… making it very light (as a watermark should be).

Thanks Hans. I have seen the Mr. Excel example and that is close to what I want but not quite the same. His technique is based on using multiple columns (cells) to break the time period into dates. What I want to do is to use only one column (a wide one) to do the same thing. I think [/i] I can do this but I need to be able to “fill” the cell. I tried using CELL(“Width”) but that only works if I have the correct combination of repeated character and point size… in other words, it doesn’t work for me.

Regarding the MS add in, I really don’t want to use a “chart” or “graph” but prefer to do this in the cells. I am cursed with always choosing the most difficult path.

This may not be the correct forum but since you are talking about Vietnamese language, I would like to clarify something in my own mind. I have two computers, one with Win XP Pro & Office XP, the other (older computer) runs Win 98 & office 97. We have Vietnamese fonts and keyboard driver on the older computer by using VNI Tan Ky Win32. Now, do I understand correctly that if i install unicode fonts that I will be able read Vietnamese web sites as well as use Vietnamese in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc?

I have noticed that when browsing the web with our newer (XP) computer, we can see some Vietnamese text correctly and others we cannot.

Thanks but, oddly enough, it seems to work properly if the Netscape browser is used. Maybe this is an IE issue rather than a PowerPoint issue.

The class is an a college level “Intro to Info Processing” class. I was hoping that I might be able to use the data to show not only relationships but also to demo some simplistic data mining.

I will try to use the NorthWInd demo, with some modification.

    • in reply to: Mail merge 5 & 9 digit Postal codes (2002 – XP) #591574

Okay, I was wrong… it DOES work. I was creating a field code (Ctrl F-9) then copying and pasting everything in between the braces. I didn’t realize they were nested field codes. Anyway, when I typed it in, it worked fine.

Interestingly, I also found that the original data source and merge document also works fine provided the first record is in the #####-#### (9 Digit) format. It is as if Word established the field picture based on the first record.

      Thank you for your help.

I have been using Fineprint for years and it is fantastic! I forget what I paid for it (US$20?) but it is worth a lot more. You can see it at http://www.fineprint.com.

Zeddy, thanks for the tip… now, to make it a little more useful, how would you reference the table from another sheet in the workbook. I/m thinking it would be useful to have a worksheet with several tables and the calculations done on the first page (worksheet).

    • in reply to: Thoughts on using XL as a Personal Organiser (97) #583788

I have used Excel not so much as a personal organizer but as a way to track assigments/projects I’ve delegated to people. Columns contain the who, what, when due, when assigned, status, status as of, and notes/comments.

I also used conditional formatting with a green, yellow, red (like a traffic light) to show on or behind schedule.

It has been useful since I use auto-filter to display projects by person, by priority, by task, etc (yes, I didn’t list all my columns). This is very useful at performance appraisal time since it serves as a journal of accomplishments (or failure to accomplish).

    • in reply to: Print Layout View problem (Word XP) #575951

It turned out to be a feature called “show/hide white space in print layout view”.

You can save screen space in print layout view by hiding the white space on the top and bottom of each page and the gray space between pages.

Move the insertion point to the top or bottom of the page and click the Show White Space or Hide White Space button.

    • in reply to: Print Layout View problem (Word XP) #575823

No. I did not have the text boundries on. However, if I do turn them on, the boundry is right at the top of the page also. It is as if Word “thinks” it is showing the top margin correctly but it is not.
