I second jscher2000’s recommendation for pdfFactory. It’s so useful to be able to combine several different documents into a single pdf and also to remove pages not wanted. I’m still with v2; v3 allows pages to be moved within the pdf and I’ll probably upgrade when I next need this function. (Note combining/deleting/rearranging is all done before the final pdf is produced.)

For viewing I use Foxit; small, efficient and not installed.

‘Fraid it’s just for folks in the good ole USA. The opinions of those of us Brits (un)fortunate enough not to live in the land of the free(bie) must not be important to Micro$oft. Anyway I resign myself to the loss of the opportunity to get Vista for free by repeating the mantra TANSTAAFL.

      Sounds good.

Can’t find how to download it as there is no download button or link.

    • in reply to: Hyperlink doesn’t work in Firefox (FrontPage 2003) #1082327

Sorry Leif, I found it to be my mistake but thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I eventually found multiple copies of the document in my download folder so I think that the downloads were so small I was missing the normal download dialogs.

For the purposes of anyone else reading this, the solution was in Firefox’s Tools>Options>Content>Configure how Firefox handles certain types of files. Pdfs were set to download only and changing this setting enabled Firefox to open pdfs, albeit for me in a separate reader (I use Foxit) rather than in a new browser window as per IE7.

    • in reply to: Unknown fonts #1081524

Thanks guys. No font tool has managed to remove these although, Alan, your suggested tool is an interesting one for the pen drive. I see that these are MS fonts and suspect that they’ve been ‘activated’ in some way that has left them uninstallable.

I finally eradicated them by getting rid of the .ttc files and then going through the registry removing all references (usual backups etc taken). That seems to have done the trick.

Looking at the list of new features it rather seems that v11 is becoming more bloated with tools I already have. Perhaps its a sign of product maturity. I currently use v8 and wondered if there was a real imperative reason to upgrade.

    • in reply to: Extremely slow startup (XP Pro SP2) #1068413

Got it guys! Wireless Zero Config service was set to manual! I’ve made it automatic, as I thought it was, and startup is back to its normal state of sluggishness.

Now that raises two questions … how the h**l did that get changed? and what else might have been changed? Anybody point me to a good list of recommended service settings?

      Many thanks for your help

    • in reply to: Extremely slow startup (XP Pro SP2) #1068407

      Hi Al and others

I also couldn’t find Bootvis and ended up downloading it from another site. I ran it but can’t say I really understand its readout. In any case it ‘reports’ BEFORE the problem occurs and so is not giving any information about what my computer is doing whilst the delay is happening.

My problem appears to be that in fact NOTHING is happening. I’ve been watching the task manager graph and, apart from a couple of small spikes (which might be caused by task manager itself), CPU usage registers 0% from the point after Zone Labs fires up to the computer continuing its startup. I’ve tried disabling Zone Labs and this makes no difference. I’ve also uninstalled ActiveSync which appears to be the next program/service to load. Again no difference.

I’m therefore stumped. I suspect I now have to wade through all the services, as Al suggests, disabling and enabling until I find what is causing it. Its just a pity that there is no sort of timed log file to tell me what the computer is doing at the time.

      Regards and thanks

My experience of roaming profiles was not so rosy. They seemed a good idea but I found that my shortcuts often didn’t work as not all computers had the same programs and in the same locations. The only way that I felt it could work was if all the computers were locked down identically.

Helen Feddema covered using multiple select list boxes some time ago in her Access Archon column for Woodys Access Watch. I found her code perfect for my purpose. Try her website.

    • in reply to: Validation of times (xp/2k) #1018376

Isn’t this sort of validation best performed from the form being used to enter data? Adding the test either when the user leaves the second date or (my preference) when the record is being saved allows a message to be given and the focus put back to the offending entry. I much prefer having control over things and not relying on Access to validate.

    • in reply to: True Image v8 not working – help! #1017236

Portable computer is now terminally ill and wont boot in any way even with Windows CD in drive (and bios set to read it). It will have to go back to Mummy HP. I now suspect a motherboard fault might underly all the odd things that have appeared to be wrong.

Thanks Big Al and Bob, and others for all your help. I think this ends this thread.

    • in reply to: True Image v8 not working – help! #1017173

Sorry the screen doesn’t stick around long enough before the machine reboots so I only have a few of the words (this is a full screen of text on a blue background.

The fault occurs after Windows starts, after I log in and after the normal screen is drawn with all icons – just at the point you would assume the m/c has fully booted. It has not let me in this morning having started OK yesterday. I’ve nothing else to go on so a full reinstall looks like being the next step.
