    • I don’t know if this software[/url] does what you want, but it seems to indicate that it can take full page documents and convert them into contacts.

“With ScanSnap, you can scan your business cards and full size documents, and import your contacts directly into a contact management software or CRM solution. ScanSnap S1500 comes with the latest version of CardMinder business card software, the new Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard, ABBYY FineReader for PC, ScanSnap Organizer software, and convenient “Scan to” functions.”

      Maybe…. what’s your point ?? 🙂

The answer was given in the first reply. It just didn’t qualify the response by saying it couldn’t be done without a computer and still preserve the drive.

While I’m sure the SATA drive might work if all the drivers are installed and the Bios supports it, I’d suggest that for this “project” you apply the KISS principle and get an IDE drive of about the same size, or larger. Given your admitted lack of technical expertise, why complicate the issue of getting the system back up so it can be used for work related tasks. If you can simply throw another IDE drive in the bay and restore the system from backups, why would you want to upgrade an antiquated XP system for a single purpose if you didn’t absolutely have to ??

      Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like it could be overcharged capacitors, if it’s consistent and leaving it unplugged fixes it.

Try removing the power entirely, then holding the power button down for a minute or so. This should COMPLETELY drain everything off, and hopefully it’ll continue working fine afterwards.

Long term, you will probably need to replace the power supply.

Thanks to all replies – Unlocker did the trick.
      Mike

So I suggest the program and provide a link to download it, regerick posts a confirmation of my suggestion in the next post, with no link, and he gets the thank you ?????

Seriously, the only important thing is that you got it sorted out. Thanks for posting back with your results.:)

    • in reply to: Can I change the icon for Adobe Reader? #1362496

You are being less than clear about what it is you want. If you want the grey/silver icon say that. If you want the file itself, but are uncertain if the file you are getting is correct because the icon is different ( the standard Adobe pdf icon), say that.

Posting links and asking us to download something for you is not good form. We will be glad to educate you, but not work for you. We volunteer here. Please respect that.

That said, here’s the icon file as a .bmp and if you were interested in the document, heres the header of the document that downloads. Changing the icon is done in Windows and is a global change (system wide, all PDF icons will change).

    • in reply to: Suffering from spontaneous reboots #1362494

I completely missed the mention of upgrading the memory in your first post. Incompatable or “bad” memory is one of the first things to suspect when a system starts the spontanious reboot cycle with no other apparent cause, such as a virus.

Bad memory can make a computer behave like a person with amnesia. It won’t know what it is or what it’s supposed to do.

When you boot the system to the multi-boot option page, rather than choosing “Safe Mode”, try “Last Known Good”. That should boot you to the last configuration that actually worked. Now, if Windows sees the boot into Safe Mode as the one that worked, then you might have to reinstall. HTH.

Added later… opps, just noticed your post about doing a complete recovery. Oh well, future reference with the Last Know Good info, I suppose.

    • in reply to: My WD hard drive crashed. #1362438

To save the data on the drive, remove it from the computer and place it in a zip-loc bag, close and put the drive in the freezer for about an hour. While the drive is chillin’, setup another computer so you can connect the drive to it. USB enclosure, slaved inside as a secondary drive or any other method you know to make it come up as a secondary drive. When the drive has cooled, slave it up and the copy the data to the hard drive in the computer it’s slaved to or another external storage medium. If the drive is truely going south, putting it in the freezer is an old trick to get it to run well one more time to get the data off it. YMMV.

See Movefiles from Windows Sysinternals. There is an examples on the page of deleting a file at the next boot (which is what you have to do).

Not necessarily so, Joe. 😉 Take a look at the little, free utility Unlocker. It should do the deed for you. Possibly without a reboot.

I use the file transfer function in TeamViewer for fast, secure transfer of files of any size. There is a free version that does not require installation, just that both computers between which the transfer is occurring are running TeamViewer.

That TRUE !!!! Now, get back in line !!! :^_^:

    • Pretty sure Clint is correct. Here’s the Media Player Codec Pack and the popular K-lite Codec Pack 9.4.

You might want to take a look at the Kodak Knowledge Center for the installation instructions for Vista.
