Have you tried a different PDF Reader? I use PDF_Xchange Viewerand uninstalled the Adobe product. Never looked back. In the latest WS Newsletter, I believe in the paid content, Fred Langa mentions he also uses PDF-Xchange Viewer rather than several other free PDF Viewers.

Excellent recommendation. We are seriously considering replacing the Adobe Reader with PDF-Xchange Viewer at work. It also has an occasional vulnerability but the vendor is very quick to release fixes. And its not the pig that the Adobe reader is.

    • in reply to: Need old version of Photoshop CS #1397861

Antiquated how? Unless you are a professional graphic artist most of the enhancements aren’t going to be used by the average hobbyist or amateur artist and photographer. And there is no upgrade path from older versions to CS6 except for CS5, so how does one justify $600+ for the latest software?

Also, v 7, CS, and CS 2 run fine on Windows 7.

My favorite is Password Safe. Its open source and free.

Download the OpenSource and free program Audacity. Launch Audacity and start a capture, play the video and you can save the audio in a variety of formats.

This is no real surprise. Several people on this forum including myself predicted that MS would have to do something with the release of what amounts to SP1.

Here’s a pretty balanced article on the subject: http://mashable.com/2013/04/12/windows-8-pc-sales-woes/

And I can’t image that would be hard to implement either.

mrjimphelps hit right on the head. That interface, while not inherently bad IMO, is far too dramatic of a change for many users. Bringing back the option for a Win7 style desktop would do wonders for thier credibility.

You mean AFTER they were taken over and bailed out with taxpayer funding correct? If I understand correctly GM had no chance in Hades of ever paying off the pensions that were coming to fruition, but they were too big to let fail in that manner economically.

I think you’ve gone a bit beyond his analogy. Yes, I am talking about now. He cited the Chevy Volt as a failure. While they didn’t sell the number they initially intended, the Volt is actually slowing creeping up in sales and starting to do quite well. So well that there will be a Caddy version. The point is that GM as a whole isn’t suffering because of the Volt. They have good cash flow and are able to move ahead in R&D on a number of projects. The same is true for Microsoft. If Windows 8 isn’t living up to sales expectations, its not a killer for the company because of everything else they do.

Windows 8 is neither dead nor is it a complete flop. The economy is a major factor, I heard on the news this morning that PC sales are down 14% from last year. That’s significant. And also a large part of their sales are lost, not because of Windows 8, but because of tablets and cell phones. A large segment of the population simply doesn’t need a PC or laptop. Even tablet sales aren’t all that great right now either.

I get a real kick out of these sensationalist article declaring the death of something. PCs and laptops are not dead. Because of alternatives that fill many people’s computing needs quite well, they will never enjoy the high sales numbers they had in the past. Windows 8 is not dead. MS is coming out with a SP later this year and will continue to improve it.

GM is alive and well. I haven’t seen anything to tell me otherwise. The perceived failure of one model doesn’t doom an entire company.

    • in reply to: How difficult is it to watch TV over the internet? #1383917

Another thing to consider is that most new TV shows are available for free streaming on network web sites 3 days to 2 weeks after they air. I’ve been considering giving up cable for a while now. We have a ROKU and a Netflix account which we like a lot. I don’t think its a huge leap to drop cable. If I can only convince my wife…

You can also try the MS Security Baseline Analyzer tool which lists patches along with links to the Microsoft documentation. It also gives more in depth information about potential security holes.

    • in reply to: 2003r2 -> 2012 DC promotion problem #1381910

Some where not too long ago I read something to this effect, that you can’t directly promote 2012 in a 2003 domain.

@mscheidler, nice write up. but I might suggest rather than upgrade a 2000 domain to 2003, go right to 2008R2. The upgrade process from 2000 to 2008R2 is surprisingly smooth and should then eliminate any issues when promoting a 2012 server.

    • in reply to: Deploy software patches #1377361

We use Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, but its far too expensive for a small environment like yours. Prior to going with SCCM we looked at a lot of options. vCenter Protect Standard was one of the better and cheapest ones on the market.

    • in reply to: Trend Micro blocks Flashplayer install #1377334

I find it rather humorous that one of the most vulnerable pieces of software is flagged as “suspicious software”. Not sure if Trend Micro does this intentionally or not, but you might try disabling your AV when downloading and installing the update.

    • in reply to: converting audio tapes for iPod use #1375088

Thanks for the heads up on the Behringer UFO202! Would the Behringer UCA202 U-Control Ultra low-latency 2 In/2 Out USB/Audio Interface do the job just as well? Only Amazon have temporarily withdrawn the UFO202….

Unless I’m missing something it looks like it should work. Also, it appears both of those are in stock right now.
