That .aup file you tried to re-export may have been missing the folder with the many accompanying files that actually are the music. If you start your project with a file- save as, and name a location, you will get a folder with the same name along with your .aup file (otherwise it may go to some default temp location- check preferences). Together they are about the same size as the .wav you can export. If that is not the case, then I am not sure what happened.

As mentioned, audacity will record and do some editing for you, such as removing blank space, fade in and out, normalize (make your peak levels more or less the same if a file is built up from various sources). It also has other effect plugins that I have not found to be too useful, but ymmv. For tape or vinyl digitizing you may want to consider another program for restoration (pop, click, hiss, hum removal). I have found Groove Mechanic to be pretty good and it’s pretty cheap.

Some things about audacity ui are less than intuitive, but it works pretty well once you have figured it out.

.mp3 is a lossy compression, so if you want to re-import to audacity for later editing, keep the native audacity file or use .wav. There are lossless compression formats, notably .ape (Monkeys Audio), requires their software (free). There is a plugin for winamp to support playing .ape’s directly. Yields about half the size of .wav’s

Try googleing “vinyl to digital”, “analog to digital” and similar for lots more- including how to optimize your recording (levels, how to connect devices, etc.)

    • in reply to: 2 CPUs but only 1 monitor #989319

Sort of on the same topic-

I just got a dell 1704FPV lcd monitor, it has a DVI and an analog input, switchable via a button on the monitor. I have it hooked up via DVI to a win xp sr2 box. Can I connect it simultaneously to another running computer (win 98se if it matters) via the analog input and switch between them with the monitor switch?

If so, I will of course ask dell if it voids the warranty, etc (which I’m sure it does), but I am curious. I haven’t been able to find any information on this.

      Thanks, Dave

      Hi Phil

I dont know if you got anywhere with this, I had the same situation and found I had to log in as administrator to access those removable drive policy settings. Hope that helps.

    • in reply to: drag/drop bookmarks ((mozilla 1.0)) #642362

      Hey Now!

I know this is a really old thread, and I am still on v1.0.1, but I stumbled on another way to drag and drop bookmarks.

Click once and release on the icon on the left of the address line. An Add Bookmark window appears. Click again on the icon and drag it into the window which will then open folders and subfolders for you.

Dont know if this is still an issue with newer versions.

      Cheers, Dave

Haven’t had to do this myself yet (fingers still crossed), but here are a couple links I chased down for that fateful day. Use your own judgement on them, I’m sure a little googling would turn up more.

A little off topic, but you might want to work this into your defrag routine if you are on win 98 (dont know if this works in other versions). Lets the defrag proceed with minimal other things running on your system to interrupt the process.

To begin, access the ToolsMtsutil folder on your Windows 98 CD-ROM. Then, locate and right-click the Defrag.inf file and select the Install command from the shortcut menu. When you do, the install operation adds the special command, Defrag /All to the RunServicesOnce key in the Registry. Now, restart Windows 98. When you do, Disk Defragmenter will run before anything else loads from the registry, the StartUp folder or the Win.ini file. It will then be able to complete the defragmentation operation uninterrupted.

If you’d like to be able to defragment your hard drive regularly using this technique, you can copy the Defrag.inf file to a folder on your hard drive. That way you can access it quickly and easily the next time you want to perform a defragmentation operation.

    • in reply to: drag/drop bookmarks ((mozilla 1.0)) #596479

Thanks for the pointer to the news server and your observations, but no dice, I have the bookmark button on my personal toolbar, plus a dozen subfolders. If I drag a link to any of these, they will expand. If I drag further, one more subfolder will open, and that is it. Interestingly, I can drag the link to any depth of subfolder on the bookmark tab of the sidebar. It is unwieldy, as they open slowly, but it does work.

The only other factor I can think of is that when I installed Mozilla, it populated my bookmark list, but with an outdated version. Where that came from I do not know, it did not match the bookmarks in the Netscape 4.xx browser that I was using up to then. As advised (somewhere) in the mozilla faq, I replaced the Bookmarks.html file with the then current one from Netscape 4.xx and all was well. Maybe that broke the drag and drop.

Anyway, thanks again and I’ll keep looking a bit before I try a re-install.

      Hi Chas

Thanks for your time, figured it was a simple macro. I just haven’t put the time into learning to write much vba.

I respect you as a souce of good prudent computing info, and look around your site from time to time. Can you point me to any references to this-

Thanks again for your efforts and knowledge sharing, Dave

      Hi Chas

I’d like to do that too and I’m wondering how you did it. In the customize toolbars area I found a savetemplate command, but it was for the currently open template and specifically *not* normal.dot

      I have W97 SR-2

      Thanks for your help, Dave

    • in reply to: Multiple recycle bins #562135

      FWIW

After applying the settings in the previous message (ie-local settings, C: set to 0%, D: and E: to 1%) and restarting, the recycle icon still showed in the C: tree, but anything deleted from the C: drive became permanently deleted, D: and E: still used the recycle bin. Not what I initially expected, but I guess this makes sense.

I reset C: to 1% use because I still want the function on all drives. At this point does it matter whether I use individual or global settings at 1%? Just curious.

      Thanks, Dave

Thanks for the quick response. Interesting that I didn’t notice the icons on the second and third drives until I did the hardware/software install. Anyway, I did have the recycle bin set globally, already reduced from the default 10%, but I took your advice and set it locally for each drive, reducing it’s size further (still about 400mb) and removing it (0%) from c:

PIII 450mhz, Win98SE, 17″ screen, Voodoo 3dfx card, 2.5 year old Dell box

I have the same thing happen- infrequently, randomly, from start, restart, or sleep mode. Have never figured it out (or tried too hard, as it just seems to be a minor pain, and not cause problems). If the computer is sleeping and the monitor is powered off, I’ll switch on the monitor first, which seems to increase the odds of correct screen res. Oh, and if I right click the BIG screen> properties> settings, I cant change the res there, have to restart to get it right. ???

(edit) My startup is the bare essentials, plus my virus scanner. This behavior has occurred with both McAfee and Innoculate IT
