I kept hearing Service Pack 3 would be out in Feb 2002, but now Microsoft comes up with this Post SP2 security rollup in late January.

Has anyone heard if SP3 is still coming out this month or if it is delayed?

You can edit the *.NT files by first unchecking the “read only” attribute using Windows Explorer, right click on the file, and go to properties… uncheck the “read only” box.

      Maybe that will help?

    • in reply to: Win2K Clients in NT 4 Domain #568929

We have some of these browsing issues you mention with Win2000 clients in our Win NT 4 domain

Some of this has to do with the Master Browser, and many times the Win2000 client becomes the master browser on that segment, so it takes awhile for it to learn the network before it can see everything right after bootup.

There is a registry entry to disable the Win2000 clients from becoming the Master Browser, but I don’t remember it offhand.

Other segments on your network may already have clients or servers acting as the Master Browser, so when you put new Win2000 clients onto those segments, browsing still works.

As for the password / login issues, it sounds like a password change gets propogated/replicated to all of the PDC/BDCs quite quickly, and that is what the new password gets those clients to finally login. I know when we upgraded some of our servers to Win2000, we had to make one of them the PDC emulator, and all Win2000 requests get funnelled to that server, and if it was busy, it caused some issues. We have since upgraded all of the BDCs to Win2000 servers, so they are all able to take the login requests, so that problem has left us.

I hope this provides at least some places to start looking.

      Good luck.

The same information for System information is found by running

      MSINFO32.EXE

Or by Clicking on Start-> Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information

Does the System Info show up this way – outside of Computer Management?

This system information is gathered using WMI controls (Windows Management Interface). You can check if your WMI controls are working properly by going to:

Computer Management -> Services and Applications -> Right click on WMI Control and choose properties.

Mine shows successfully connected to local computer with WMI version 1085.0005, and WMI location C:WINNTSystem32WBEM

I’m not a WMI expert, but it is a place to start your MS knowledge base searches

Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWindows NTNTBackupdata

      The logs are in:

If you delete the registry keys Log#1, Log#2, Log#3, etc…. that should get you what you want

Try going into Control Panel -> Internet Options, then click on the PROGRAMS tab, and change the dropdown for Mail to Outlook (from Outlook Express). See image attached.

      See if that helps.

you can try playing with the “Show Title” and “Show Text” toggle settings by right clicking the TASK bar and enabling, disabling these …

That will totally remove the “My Network Places” title, and may give you some more room. The “hover text” when you mouse over the items still appears as it should to guide you if you disable viewing both of the above.

Which Virus Scan program do you run?

Have you run a full (all files) scan with the most recent Virus definition files to make sure you are clean?

Lastly, can you try isolating if one of your RAM chips is going bad? Pull one SIMM out, and operated Outlook… see if it crashes, then try the others one by one? Just a thought.

    • in reply to: Insert picture not working (Office2K SR1) #1788374

I am using Windows 2000 Professional SP2, IE 5.5 SP2 and Outlook 2000 SR1, and don’t have a problem inserting pictures (GIF or BMP) into HTML mail messages.

When I go to a new message, I must be in the body of the message (not TO:, CCsmile and then the option to INSERT -> OBJECT is availabe, and you then choose “Create from File”, and then browse to the file, and select it, and choose OK. Make sure you don’t have the “Display as Icon” checked.

Is this the procedure you are following? If so, does an image program (i.e. MS Photo Editor) open up when you are trying to insert the picture?

    • in reply to: Num Lock registry setting not persisting #542145

I had this NUMLOCK situation too, and it seemed to correct itself after making the registry change per the Microsoft Support article at:
      http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar…s/Q154/5/29.ASP

Could you setting change be set via a Local Security Policy setting?

If you login as a different user and adjust that registry setting to “2” and logoff and log back in as that different user does that setting stay or not?

Lastly, what I found is that when I have two different hardware profiles (DOCKED and UNDOCKED) when using a docking station that my NUMLOCK state changes between the two profiles.

      Good luck.

    • in reply to: Empty folder shows message exists #542142

Try changing your “Current View” settings.

We had these invisible messages occur when someone accidentally changed the view settings to something else like “unread messages” or “last seven days”.

The default view for the “DRAFTS” folder is “SENT TO” in Outlook 2000. Try selecting the DRAFTS folder, then go to VIEW -> Current View -> and check SENT TO

If that doesn’t work, try pick and choosing the other views.

      Good Luck.

    • in reply to: win2000 no shutting down/ restart #1782696

Does it not shutdown at all? Or restart not working or both?

    • in reply to: CRASH #1782693

Do other program installations complete past the 90 percent? Like Office97/2000 ?

    • in reply to: CRASH #1782688

Is it “any” software you try to install or just certain software programs?

Have you tried installing as a user with Full Administrative rights?

Can you try disabling the virus software or any other programs that are loaded in the system tray or in the RUN area of the registry?

Maybe try installing in Safe Mode to see if the program installs there, and then try and trace what may be causing the conflict.

Good luck… and keep us posted.

    • in reply to: “Go Back” to earlier date #1781642

You can use the Windows Backup program and check the box to save the “SYSTEM STATE” information.

And restore the “system state” info to revert back.

      I hope this helps.
