    • in reply to: Beware Norton Antivirus 2001 bug #1783963

Seems the thing reconfigures server settings in Outlook Express when email security is selected, such that user can’t use OE for mail anymore and NAV 2001 doesn’t work with it anyway. From what I gathered from the Symantec tech site, it’s a known bug with no fixes. Beware.

      Of what?
Running NAV 7.07.230D with E-Mail protection on and experiencing no problems. Even through ZoneAlarm.

      > There is an old DOS utility that would change date/time stamps….

Also a freeware WIN9X proggie that changes any dates and more…plugs into Explorer.

      Look for PropertiesPlus.

      > What is this file Folders.dbx I can see In Windows
      > Explorer?

Sort of a catch all for OE. Keep reading…

      > Is it in fact my Local Folders I can see in OE and, if
      > so, why is it so large?

Not exactly. “Folders.dbx” contains the local folder hierarchy (SP?) but not the folder contents. Those are in the *.dbx filoes that have the same name as your mail folders. For newsgroups, there will be a DBX file for every newsgroup you ever looked at. Also has:

      – Newsgroup lists (downloaded from news server)
      – Message rules
      – Miscellaneous bits and settings

      > Can I reduce it or delete it?

Not really. Have you ever compacted it? If you delete it, you lose how your folders are nested and all rules.

A post on the MSNEWS server asked how to start a DUN connection in a DOS batch file. Was answered with a pointer to MSKB. Found there was RUNDLL command line.

No surprise here. I knew DUN Connectiods were virtual critters.

Can’t recall the KB article number shrug but search on DUN with “command line” should pull it up.

And, yes, a desktop connectoid takes the hot key assaignment and it works. But not on the Quick Launch bar.

      sad

Hmmmm…wonder if this would work for a DUN connectoid ?
      doh

I found the solution! For the time being anyway

First, dig around on a Win98 CD for PINBALL.INF, you must use the one on CD. Furthermore, you’ll probably need to edit the file, so copy it to a temp directory, remove the read-only attribute, and open it.

Near the beginning, there’s a reference to PLUSPLAYT.INF, a file you may have multiple copies of. The one you want is on whichever CD Plus!95 is on. In my case, I had this stashed on a hard drive. But the path in PINBALL.INF must point to Plus!95 INF file! Got it? Do the edit, save, close, right-click/Install.

The install might stutter a bit, but if you point the install routine consistently to the Plus!95 cab files you’ll get all the files but one…PINBALL2.MID. Music won’t work but sounds will.

      That’s it!

That mixer is a stubborn [censored].
I tried MSCONFIG and wound up with multiple entries for the mixer proggie STARTER.EXE. Even zapped the registry entries directly, only to have them come back upon reboot.

So I gave up and hide the thing with Tray Manager. Occassionally, it’s even useful.

Alas, my registry mining came to naught.

In my case, the sounds vanished when I upgraded the motherboard, or maybe when I downloaded from windows update a theme from Plus! 98. That added P!98 theme handler to my start menu and probably mucked around the Plus! key in the registry.

      Ah, well, it’s just a game…

      Suprised I haven’t seen Notepad+ from Rogsoft mentioned yet.http://www.mypeecee.org/rogsoft/%5B/url%5D

Meets most of wish list earlier. 1) FREE 2) C coded 3) MDI 4)Stable — least I’ve never tanked it. 5) I’ve opened MB sized files in it.

The search gets flaky on files > 64K

Hasn’t had an update in awhile, either. Author says because it really doesn’t need any since he wants to avoid bloat. It weighs in at 423 KB.

A drop-in replacement for M$ Notepad and fixes most of that program’s lacks.

      Same thing here.

Must be in the registry somewhere, I’ll poke around and see what I can find.
