I see– your help I appreciate. Methinks a little more forethought from my part coulda prevented my posting… But then I woulda missed your enlightenment (awright, am I being polite or what?? smile)
BTW, She-Wolf…. err no, wait… Megadeth is taking over again…. Lady Wolf, have you noticed how … stupidme … suggestive … thankyou … smilies can be?

Just dropped by this forum and stumbled upon this post. I read the rules (admittedly I hadn’t) and after checking the smilies, I’m trying to find a courteous use for the RTFM one (that is, to comply with rule # 9 – ‘Just try to be courteous’). Maybe when speaking ironically about an instruction hid deep in a user-not-so-friendly manual… Just guessing.
Apart from that, smilies are great. A great improvement over the number of smilies and flags to pick from has been done from the fist time I used them.

      Keep going like that!

I was about to add Drive Rescue to the list but it seems the author decided to discontinue it and can’t find a download site. I believe I got Drive Rescue from a non-official page. I think a lounger sig directed me to that page, so maybe DR is still online. If someone has the url…

However, I’ve had some problems with DR’s files recovery. BUT if all you want the software to do is SHOW which files were deleted, DR will do the trick. Choose a directory, and deleted files are shown in a distinct color (Note: files which were cut and are therefore no longer in their former directory are also shown as deleted)

Don’t know Registry Cleaner or Easy Cleaner, but Reg Clean ROCKS thumbup. Plus it’s free.

    • in reply to: SpyBot S&D #642116

I used Ad-Aware a couple of years ago and don’t remember much of its interface. But after trying SpyBot S&D, I realize it has some neat options A-A didn’t. I’ll still edit which programs are launched at startup via run>msconfig, and pgp also features file shredding, but it won’t hurt having these features twice. I run an “anti-ad” app once every while, and I think I’ll stick to SB S&D.

Last word: thanks for persuading me into trying it! cheers

Never heard of VuePrint before. Seems pretty useful, PLUS has keyboard shortcuts for every function I checked grin.
Still I’ll stick to Irfanview till a freeware version of VuePrint is released. Not that I’d replace Irfanview, but VuePrint looks like a nice addition to my image edition apps.

Thanks Big Al, I got it. I edited my post to hyperlink web addresses.

This thread is too good to let it fall into oblivion, so here go some entries I forgot to include:

      Fine View: http://www.fine-view.com/%5B/url%5D
Very handy to view multiple images. Includes thumbnail view of a directory and slideshow. Does not require installation. FREE.

      Photoplus: http://www.serif.com/%5B/url%5D
Excellent soft for heavy-duty image edition. Features layers and advanced options

[Edited by Diegol to add html Code]

I’m sorry I didn’t post earlier, but I’ve been overwhelmed at work… just drooled reading all the oddities…
      Ok, this is my list:

      e-prompter: http://www.eprompter.com/%5B/url%5D
Great utility for checking e-mails other than your corporate mail. For example, I use outlook for my corporate mail, while e-prompter runs in the systray and checks my other 3 mail accounts periodically (I set it to check them every 1 min). Supports hotmail’s http server, pop3, smtp, and some other types. Whenever you receive mail, you hear a sound and a number displays in the eprompter icon in the systray showing the number of unread mails. You assign a color for each account so if you have unread mails in several accounts, they will display in different colors. Said enough, great app. Ok, one more: not resource-munching.

      Music Match Jukebox: http://www.musicmatch.com/%5B/url%5D
I don’t like it as a player, but it rocks when it comes to ripping CDs (real fast!). It’s format conversion feature also comes handy (conversion between mp3, wma, wav).

      PGP: http://www.pgpi.org/%5B/url%5D
Depending on the version, you can encrypt (symmetrically / asymmetrically) files, the clipboard, mails, ICQ msgs; Establish VPNs; Overwrite deleted data so no one can restore it; Create encrypted virtual disks to store critical information; Create Self-Decrypting Archives. I really like the last two features (too bad they are in different versions and you cannot install them both at the same time).

      Rambooster: http://www.sci.fi/~borg/rambooster/index.htm%5B/url%5D
Has several options for optimizing your RAM usage.

The last time someone was told to include html code, I tried to check the Quick Guide link but the page was not available… so I dunno how to. If someone would tell me, next time things will be tidier.

      Merry Christmas t’ y’all!!

Hans, thanks for your prompt response.

As you say, the ftp site is no longer available. The second thread’s ending is not very encouraging, as poor lil’ Eileen is left in the cold clinging to her will to succeed and keeping faith in God’s benevolence as her only option…

But that ain’t happenin’ to ME…. right? please

Seriously, this is terribly annoying… ranton Got to know your data can be disclosed to strangers by opening a Word document? Good thing, ’cause MS wouldn’t have told ya. Now, don’t feel ripped off, MS has maide available a patch for everyone to download… all you have to do is guess the web address. C’mon! Who taught these guys customer satisfaction? Aren’t computers supposed to make things easier? Why use the phone!!!!???? rantoff

Sorry, if someone has the link that works, please post back.

      Hey Ken, thanks!

The version I downloaded was 5.0, and I don’t rember it being so…. big (plus I was downloading using a dial-up connection, woulda remembered 19 M for sure smile).
In fact, I’m checking the executable files in my HD and the total three amount to 12 M.

There’s a point with personal data disclosure: you get offers from Serif too often. But the soft is definetly worth it.

    • in reply to: Uppercase/Lowercase changing apps #636276

      Hi Bruce,

I have this utility which I find to be very useful. Helped me many times.

Rname-it not only it will let you recase file names, but also replace or insert strings within a file name. It takes file extensions and prefixes as separate things, which is handy sometimes. Best of all, it’s free.

      http://www.angelfire.com/ca/kent/frame.html%5B/url%5D

From the web site: “file renaming utility specialized for batch (en masse) process renaming. It allows the user to select multiple files and rename them all at once. Files can easily be organized and grouped by renaming to a new common prefix and/or padded with a unique numerical or alphabetical value for sorting purposes. Also features Real Time Preview and Full (Final) Preview to ease the user in a complicated renaming procedures. Great for graphics collectors and webmasters!”

By the way, I think I grabbed it from one of the many links in Loungers’ signs. Hope it works!!!

    • in reply to: Free MP3 to WAV Converter? #632110

Another useful soft is MusicMatch Jukebox. The ver. I installed (7.00.0149) makes conversions from and to any of these formats: wav, mp3, wma. Hopefully the latest ver. retained this feature. I don’t update because the program works just fine and my experience with MMJB teaches “the newer the version, the more resources you gotta resign”.
BTW, MMJB is a CD rippin’ beast too (does the job in no time). A thread on MP3 encoding was in the spotlight two or three months ago, still it’s a good thing to remember.

    • in reply to: Sniffing out Suspicious Field Codes (97-2000-XP) #622163

Yes, I know that. I just wanted to point out that this Error message did appear in someone else’s pc regardless of which document the field was in.
By the way, I tried jscher’s document, and again, the Error msg appears instead of the field value.
Go figure… Instead of calming me down this… immunity (?) issue makes me think that I’m either doing something wrong or not scanning the Word file appropiately (for the info the document is supposed to suck in. In jscher’s file, autoexec.bat).
      scratch

If someone has a clue, please drop a line.

      Thanks

    • in reply to: Sniffing out Suspicious Field Codes (97-2000-XP) #622047

      Hi Phil,

      In a recent post

      http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showflat.p…sb=5&o=0&fpart=

I (detailed how the INCLUDETEXT field in the Spyware.doc file bundled along with the HFD returned an “Error! The file could not be opened” message. I thought this had to do with my word versions (W97 SR-2 in Spanish + Win98 at work / W2000 in Spanish + Win98 at home), ie, with the fields conversions to Spanish (which I couldn’t figure out how this could be troublesome).
Now that I hear a similar problem from someone else, I believe we can start talking about a sorta immunity
I’ll give jscher file a try and let you know the outcome.

    • in reply to: Document Collaboration Spyware Frenzy (W97 SR-2 Spanish) #621431

      Hi,

After my last post I took some time to install HFD at home (Office 2000 in Spanish). Surprisingly it didn’t work either. I revised carefully the word documents both at the office and at home, and forcing word to display fields results (Ctrl+Shift+F9) field by field, found the following:

      – Both of the DATE fields worked ok.
      – The IF field enclosing the DATE fields also worked ok. It returned the path to the document to absorb, c:mxyztplk.doc
      – Now, the INCLUDETEXT field enclosing the mentioned IF field returns something like “Error! Impossible to open the file.”
      – Lastly, the IF field enclosing the INCLUDETEXT field returns nothing. I don’t understand the syntax of this last IF field, but I guess it is returning the “” string.

So, as far as I see, the problem is either with the INCLUDETEXT field or with the name and path of the c:mxyztplk.doc file. I triple checked and the file name and path are correct. Maybe the conversion to the Spanish version messed up the code… I dunno.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks
