Office 2007 is at SP2, Windows update has all downloads other than 3 optional items installed. A reboot is not required as this change reverts after a closing of Outlook and starting of Outlook.

All Office 2007 apps were uninstalled today with a clean install yet the menus continue to revert back so they do not “always show full menus”.

At this time I will live with it since I don’t see anything in Event Viewer to help me pin down the issue.

Admittedly, this is just a guess on my part but it wouldn’t take long to test it out. I’m thinking that the “Classic” theme you are using automatically disables some functions which are available using the Aero Theme. Why not enable the Aero Theme in “Personalization” and see if you can create a link in the “Favorites Links” using the same drag & drop method?

Another question that comes to mind is whether you might have disabled some features, this being one of them (could be tied in with something else?) sometime ago and have forgotten you did so?

Lastly, and this is a matter for the Vista forum, you can adjust font sizes without resorting to the Classic Theme. Whether it would meet your particular needs is something only you could determine.

Thank you all for your comments and questions. What I just found was that under my user profile structure there was NO Links folder. I compared the other users structure and noted the difference. When I created a new Links folder I was then able to create whatever shortcuts I pleased within Windows Explorer and they were present when I repeated the picture save operation from within IE 8.

I would suggest you not try to create a new “link” in your Favorites Links while in a “Save as” dialog window. Have you tried to add a link using the “drag & drop” method outlined in the article in a regular Explorer window?

And, I’m just curious why you are using a “Classic” theme in Vista and not the default Aero?… nostalgia nightmare!

The behavior is the same in Windows Explorer where I have to click the arrow to display the “Favorites Links”.

I do not run the Windows Vista Theme as I have adjusted fonts for several of the display items due to a vision impairment. To run Aero I would have to give up such needed changes.

      Does this help?

Quick Add Links to Windows Vista Explorer Favorite Links

Thank you but I found that the instructions did not work as described on my machine. I could not browse to a folder in the right hand panel and drag to the left panel or the “favorite links” toolbar. Again I have attached a screen shot of what happens when I drag a folder. I get the black circle with the slash through it and nothing changes.

Also, I am running as an admin at the time.

    • in reply to: IE 8 Sorting #1181357

      Pilgrim,
He is using the drop down Favorites from the Menu. As far as I can remember it has always acted this way, closed after sorting, but I do NOT have a older version of IE to check it out.

Thank you DaveA. Yes I am simply opening the Favorites menu which in IE6 stayed open on screen after performing a sort. On the current Vista HP 64 bit I have used both IE7 and IE8. I do not want to use the new feature to have the favorites always open on the left side of the screen although I could activate that, perform the sorting and then when done with my maintenance, then close but I choose to not do that.

Basically I was asking if anyone knew if this feature is dead and I got suggestions to use a different feature. While those answers point in the direction of IE6’s behavior no longer being available, it misses the question. It is like responses to Adobe Reader questions that simply suggest uninstalling Reader and use a different product or responses to Outlook questions which suggest using Thunderbird.

      1. Click on the “Favorites” button on the far left to open the “Favorites Center” (menu)
      2. Click on the little arrow button on the right of the menu (this pins the menu, i.e., it stays open)
      3. DONE

Thank you both but that is not what I want. I don’t want the favorites to be permanently open. I only want them open when I am sorting, post sorting, etc. I’d like to have the favorites remain on screen AFTER a sort is performed for further use and not have to reopen the list of favorites without resorting to your suggestions to use another feature.

I was hoping someone knew if this behavior was dropped when IE 7 or 8 was introduced.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am still hoping I just missed a menu option for uninstall, etc. If I had the time I’d try to reinstall version 7 on one machine to see if I then had the option to uninstall. Maybe I’ll provide a review of the Revo Uninstaller.

What I did to uninstall PageMaker 7 where there was no Control Panel, Add Remove entry was run the company install script and install the product on top of itself. That created the missing Add Remove option in Control Panel and the uninstall then completed normally.

I always thought PM was a separate application but I haven’t checked Adobe’s site in a while.

You could try a tool such as Revo Uninstaller Freeware – Uninstall Software, Remove Programs, Solve uninstall problems to see if it can help.

I agree with Steve. See the screenshot for the effect of a white diagonal border.

      Thanks guys!

Steve and Hans nailed it. We did not think in terms of a straight line as the line looked etched as it went through the letters but once again, the collected wisdom rises to the top.

I am also having problems with the computer recognizing my Cannon digital camera (new). Am lso having problems downloading pictures to my digital photo album frames.

Does Vista recognize the camera so you can see it when you open Windows Explorer and select “Computer”? I gave up on using Canon’s software with Vista Home Premium 64 bit and now just drag my pics from the camera directly to the appropriate folders.

    • in reply to: Outlook 2007 Configuration Changes Don't Stick #1158505

1.) Have you tried any other customizations? Do they “stick”?
2.) Do you have Office 2007 SP1 installed?
3.) Are you running as a “normal” user or an “admin” user?

My account was the one the HP initial configuration created for me and I don’t remember doing anything special, however, I created a new account yesterday and made it an admin account and the issue has resolved. The strange thing is when I right click on the Start button, both accounts show me “open all users”. In XP this was something that would confirm a user had local admin rights.

Now I just have to live with not being able to disable or delete the original account, one of the features of Vista HP64 bit that I find less than appealing.

From our Knova product’s knowledge articles the Sharepoint links to ppts open full screen and sit there. Pressing F5 doesn’t start an auto presentation but you can click on the display and it moves through one screen at each click. Does that help or just muddle?

      Thanks,

    • in reply to: Runing chkdsk at startup (XP SP3) #1142067

Running XP Pro you should be able to run chkdsk /f at a cmd prompt. When you get the message about “Cannot lock current drive and then be offered the opportunity to run chkdsk at the next restart. If you answer Y and do a shut down restart, you should see the chkdsk display.

Is this not what happens for your computer?
