Thanks to all for the input. I did go into the event viewer and click on different aspects of what was there. I am not at all certain that I knew exactly what I was doing but apparently I did no harm as everything is still working and Windows came up this morning OK. I made some changes and used the MS info to guide me. I will see over the next few days whether I have cured the problem or not. I just checked the event viewer and the Service Control Manager (SCM) could not start the specified service, probably because the service is not configured correctly is still the message with the 7000 code, but it went ahead and 30 seconds later the SCM loaded OK. So there is still something that I am missing, why it doesn’t load and then goes ahead and loads. The message for when it loads is: The Network Location Awareness (NLA) service was successfully sent a start control, (7035). Any ideas on this is appreciated.

Thanks for the response. Yes I have Zone Alarm Security Suite running and updated, plus I run Ad Adware regularly, so I don’t think it is a virus either. I looked at the Event Viewer and what I found was in the System Viewer, Event Control Manager shows about 3 errors each time I startup the computer. It shows that for every day for the month of December and the Event Number is always 7000 and 7001. I don’t know what that means. Do You? The Application Viewer shows an error in Userenv and event number is 1517 and this is after the computer is running for an hour or so. Any ideas on this is appreciated.

Hans, thanks for the direction to some good ideas for recording cassettes to CDs. I download Audacity and the Lame decoder. Now to actually sit down and do the work.
      Thanks

I want to thank everyone for the ideas for copying cassettes to CDs. I will try some of these applications and see how it goes. I knew there was an easier way but didn’t know where to look. Thanks again.

Thanks to all that responded to my post. I apologize for being so late to respond but I had a death in the family and was gone all last week. As to the problem, what I finally did was use the media player from my DVD software and CDs now play OK. I tried reinstalling the SoundBlaster software and it gave me the message that no SoundBlaster hardware was installed? Huh? The hardware hadn’t changed, there were no indications in the hardware section about problems, so I still don’t know why the problem happened and I still don’t have sound on my headphones, but that is not a big deal. Right now I am satisfied with the CDs playing. It is strange that the SoundBlaster software wouldn’t play through the SoundBlaster card but my DivDX player would. Oh well, another puzzle to solve someday.

Yes, I have checked for muted sound. I am not sure how to verify a sound card without just replacing it. But that doesn’t explain not being able to hear a CD with headphones at the CD player, does it? I didn’t think the sound routed through the sound card when you plugged the headphones directly into the player. Am I wrong? I just tried using Windows Media Player to play some music I had on my computer and that also was no sound. Is replacing the sound card the only way to see if that corrects the problem?

      Thanks cowboydawg.
I will probably get a harddrive cooler and another case fan next month.

Thanks SMBP. I just needed an extra push. Also the site you gave me to download from worked much better than where I got it before. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it and run the install and it was totally different than before. It put Tweak in WindowsSystem32 instead of the prefetch file. Then I got the utility to put the icon in the control panel, and voila, it works. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for all the replies. I downloaded TweakUI Powertoys.exe to my temp folder. I then clicked on it to install. The only place that it went was to the Windows Prefetch folder. I tried the idea of dragging the Tweak Prefetch to the control panel and it would only let me put it into administrative tools. But I still couldn’t access it. It isn’t on the Startup menu. I did find it on my Office Shortcut Bar. I can run it from there but none of the other ideas seemed to work for me. I guess as long as I can get it from the Shortcut Bar that is all that is necessary. So we can let this go at that. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Thanks to all for the replies. I have gone through all the MS KBs on this subject that were listed and ran the detect and repair and still the same result. Each program goes into the install etc. KB 274473-I already had those DWord values. KB 272952 was for an initial install, not my problem. KB 221455-I had those settings already also. Yes, and then I ran detect and repair, restarted and opened Word and same problem. I do appreciate the ideas, but so far that hasn’t solved the issue. Thanks for any other ideas.
