    • in reply to: Jump Lists in Windows 10 #1524487

It looks like I have found the solution which works in Win 7 and 10.
      I found this solution here:-
      http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/jump-list-not-working-correctly-in-windows-7/d70c15f9-b48f-45a1-bdc7-cd96d77d9837?auth=1

I hope others find it useful.

Jump List…that is corrupted in AutomaticDestinations-hidden system folder is the likely solution.. To resolve and fix the issue, follow these steps:

      Open Windows Explorer .
Type or copy and paste the following into the address bar:

      %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsRecentAutomaticDestinations
Identify files that are comparatively larger in size than the rest of the file, such as files that have file size of 1 MB or more.

      Delete the abnormal file.

Tip: If you do not want to retain the Jump Lists’ recent items history on all applications, just delete all the automaticDestinations-ms files in the folder.

The recent items functionality on Jump Lists will be restored. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. However, do note that the solution does not restore the previously pinned items. So user will have to pin new items again.

BTW I have done the tweak to add Jump List functionality to the Start Menu, but no new files are being added.

For those who want to try out Jump Lists with the new Start Menu, just follow the steps below.

      Open regedit.exe (Win+R)
      Navigate to: “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced”
Create a new “Dword (32-bit) value”
      Name it “EnableXamlJumpView”
      Set its value to 1
      Restart PC

But as I say, new files opened do not appear on the Jump Lists, either on the Task Bar or in the Start Menu.

      Dennis,

when your drives are that full and depending on what your time is worth (in $) a new drive from current production seems advised.
500GB+ are available for around $50 on Newegg and Tigerdirect.
The disk clone program could be Macrium Reflect, free.

Definitly better than fiddling with partition sizes when there is too little room in the first pace.

My problem at the stage I last posted yesterday was that my C drive was extended but my D drive required formatting. At least that was what Windows said. Using MiniTool Partition Wizard 9.0 “Explore Partition” I could see my files on D drive but Windows could not.

I unallocated some space on my 1 Tb external drive and copied my D drive there. Overall this took about 7 hours and when finished, still the new partition asked to be formatted too! It could not be seen by Windows either! Panic time!!!

I then tried “Check file System” – “check and fix detected errors” with MiniTool Partition Wizard 9.0 and this rendered it readable by Windows. So I formatted D: and copied all the files back onto it. I could finally breathe again!

While I now have 10.8 Gb free on my C drive, I have ordered a new Seagate 1Tb Barracuda 3.5″ SATA 7200 rpm HDD for $80 which should arrive in a week. I will look at completely separating my data onto this drive and leave the 300Gb for operating system and programs.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Partitioning software, but it was worrying when the new partition asked to be formatted AFTER it was extended or AFTER the data was loaded to it. It was not obvious that a Check and Fix detected errors would right the situation.

I wasn’t game to do this on the D: drive and risk loosing everything. When I was working with the copy on the external drive it was worth the risk which paid off.

OK the extend partition has taken space from D and given it to C, good, but now I can’t access D and Windows says it must be formatted! D is where all my data resides … geeee!
Not sure if any options in MiniTool Partition Wizard 9.0 can help me now.

Thanks I will give that a try.
Does the free version allow non-contiguous areas to be joined?

    • in reply to: Current window loses focus #1450016

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I started suffering the loss of focus yesterday and hope this may help someone.

I am running Win 7 32bit, Office 2007 and Thunderbird. I was losing focus every few seconds in Excel, Thunderbird and another program, IGV 2.3 (Intergrative Genomics Viewer).

Checking Task Manager I saw a program was grabbing huge amounts of memory about every 1-2 seconds then releasing it. The program was NMIndexStoreSrv.exe A Google check revealed this was part of Nero7 CD/DVD burner, my version of which apparently does not play well with Windows 7. Apparently Nero v9 and 10 are OK.

From msconfig > startup I saw two items, Nero Home and Nero AG NeroCheck. I unchecked these in Startup and rebooted.

      No more loss of focus!

Hope this may help someone …

May also need to check that the SD card does not have a little lock switch on it, these can easily be knocked into the locked position when removing and replacing. maybe you new reader overides this security option.

Thanks Clive, but these were microSD cards which don’t have a lock switch. The new reader recognises both microSD cards that the old reader still rejects.
      Cheers, Dennis

Yep, new reader solved my “Write” problems. I guess nothing lasts forever! Just happy it was a $6.93 solution!
      Cheers!

You are probably out of luck then. I do not know, are these readers expensive? Like I said, no experience with them. I suppose you could check with a local retailer to see if they could check it out for you before buying a new one.

I think I paid about $10 … not too much pain to buy another. Cheers!

Edit:- Just ordered a new one on eBay … $6.93 including delivery!

How old is the reader? I have not used a reader of this type since my laptops both have a built in device for this purpose. Have you tried a different USB port on your PC? If you get the same failure in more than one USB port it could very well be the reader has failed. Since I am unfamiliar with their operation I do not know if they can be write protected by S/W.

Can you right click the reader icon in My Computer (does it even show up) and see if there is a write protect option?

The reader is about 12 months old, a “Lucky Dragon” brand I suppose. It does not show up in My Computer, Just the SD card (as a disk) that is plugged into it.
As I said, I have tried 3 different SD cards in the reader and tried the reader plugged into in my laptop as well as my desktop. I believe it has to be the reader.

    • in reply to: SD Cards? #1329696

I use MicroSD cards in my GPS.

Perhaps someone can help me with a problem that has just come up. I have a Multi Card Reader that plugs into a USB port and yesterday when i went to change some files on the MicroSD card, I get a message that it can’t proceed:- “The Disk is Write Protected, Remove the Write Protection or use another disk.”

Neither the Reader nor the MicroSD card has any lock switch. I have tried three different SD cards and tried using the Card reader in another machine with the same result.

Is it common for Card Readers to Fail in this way?

There is another version circulating such this I received yesterday:-

In Microsoft Outlook 2000 (maybe the same in other versions), if I look at the email in ‘preview’, when I run the cursor over a link such as “View the details of this transaction online” in the bar at the bottom it displays the actual address that you will go to if you click. In this case it was http://silentstartupwebsite.com/xBu5dukk/index.html and so on for all the links. Easy to get sucked in! BEWARE !!!

    • in reply to: New Yahoo Mail Version #1292552

Thanks for the welcome … have been lurking for quite some time!

While I can obviously use IE for Yahoo Mail, there is a work around I have found.
Bookmark http://address.yahoo.com/ which takes you to your contacts list. Why it is not linked to Yahoo Mail I do not know.

    • in reply to: New Yahoo Mail Version #1292539

I am having a problem with Yahoo Mail in that my Contacts List is not showing when using my prefered browser, Firefox. Says I have 81 contacts but the loading symbol goes on forever and never loads the list.
I am running XP Pro SP3 with Firefox 5.0.1. Have tried Firefox in ‘Safe’ Mode (Add ins and Plug ins switched off) but no better.
I have no problem when using IE8 or Opera 11.50, contact list displays properly.

The Help forum at Firefox notes the problem (https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/780645?s=Yahoo+no+contacts&as=s) and 83 users have the same problem.
Emails to Yahoo get responses asking me to confirm Windows and Firefox version I am using which I do of course, but no solution is forthcoming.

      Any ideas?
