    • in reply to: Is having my email address spoofed a problem? #1586153

For what it is worth, I have had no further spoofing of my email address since adding the SPF record to my domain. Two weeks now.
v=spf1 a mx ptr include:justhost.com -all see:- https://my.justhost.com/hosting/help/spf for details.
Just hoping that was the final solution.

A couple of days ago, I had a legitimate email bounced by btinternet.com. They said in part:-

“Too many messages from un-validated IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Please add a SPF record to your DNS or ask your Broadband Provider/Domain Registrar to do this.”

I could make no sense of this instruction, however when I went to Just Host help pages I found this:- https://my.justhost.com/hosting/help/spf

Following these instructions I was able to add the required SPF record, and btinternet.com has accepted my emails again.

      I hope this helps others.

      Thank you Slorm. Excellent explanation.

Contact the ISP/email provider quickly, your email address certainly can be banned by several ISPs. Being spoofed was not your fault, however, if not acted upon i.e. reporting such to your ISP/email service, such certainly can become your problem, big time. Thankfully, most spoofs die off over time.

Thank you, at your suggestion I have sent a message to my ISP (Spintel in Melbourne), who will call me in the morning to discuss.

When changing the password doesn’t work then it will be best if you contact the email provider.

These are the links for Gmail and Outlook –

My host, (and email provider), is Just Host, my domain is irishtype3dna.org and I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client. I have contacted Just Host and they merely suggested changing passwords, which, I have found, made no difference … I am still receiving bounced messages.

Am I correct, that if someone wants to spoof the sending address, they can enter anything they like … they don’t have to have access to that account, do they? They are just entering a legitimate address, mine.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 Anniversary Update arrives — slowly #1573388

Thanks for the article. I used Update assistant to start the Windows 10 update which went fine over one and a half hours. Start appearance however, was same as before and Figure 2 in the article had not appeared. Checking the system it said I was on 1511.
Clicking the Update assistant icon that the earlier update had left told me I was still on 10586 and version 14393 was available and then proceded with the update a second time. After a further hour, Figure 2 (from the article) appeared during the process and the update seems to have proceeded properly. System is now 1607. Start menu is showing Apps now.

    • in reply to: Office 2007 no longer recognising .doc and .xls files #1551541

I was not aware of that excellent guide to removing Office Suites.
As the Auto versions had not worked, I followed the manual version, including all the Registry edits and I was then able to do a clean install of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007.

Excel now saves in both .xlsx and .xls, and opens both formats again. Same for Word with .doc and .docx files.

      Thank you … whew!!!

    • in reply to: Office 2007 no longer recognising .doc and .xls files #1551439

Now I am in deep do-do.
I used Advanced Installer Pro 11 to completely remove all traces of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007.
I rebooted the computer and then proceeded to insert my Genuine Original CD, entered the Product Key and went to install again.
      I get an error:-
‘Error 25004 Config.Xml not specified. A valid config.xml file must be authorised when deploying (null)’

Now I am left with no Excel or Word !!!

      Any thoughts???

    • in reply to: Office 2007 no longer recognising .doc and .xls files #1551419

      Hmmmm….
Programs & Features > Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 > Uninstall gives a similar message:-
“Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 uninstall did not complete successfully.”

Similarly if I use the original install CD and try to repair, uninstall or add features I get a similar mesage.
Looks like I will have to use a 3rd Party Program to uninstall Office 2007 ?

    • in reply to: Office 2007 no longer recognising .doc and .xls files #1551418

      Thanks Paul,

Yes, I will do that …. just wondering how many updates have come through in the last 8 years that will need to be downloaded again!!!

      Cheers from Melbourne, Oz.

      Hi Paul,

Using Programs & Features > Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 > Change > Repair I get the message:-
“Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 configuration did not complete successfully.”

When I use the Diagnose method, It checked through the first four diagnostic sections satisfactorily, but when it came to ‘Setup Diagnostics’ at 1 of 12 it says:-
“Microsoft Office Diagnostics has stopped working”.

However on running the Diagnostics a second time it goes through saying “No Cause Found”.
Clicking ‘Continue’ takes me to a ‘dead’ link.
      http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/diagnostichelp.aspx?V=12.0.6612.1000

Checking again, my problem is still there, Excel falls over trying to save in 97-2003 (xls) format

    • in reply to: Unable to delete PDF Files #1545890

So I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat DC and reinstalled. With the Preview Pane switched off I am now able to delete files, so it was a combined problem of Preview Pane being switched on in File Explorer AND a suspect installation of Acrobat DC that was not releasing the files when Preview Pane was switched off.

    • in reply to: Unable to delete PDF Files #1545877

      Thanks jwoods for that link.
My ‘Launch folder in a separate process’ was not selected but I noted that this solution also required going out of File Explorer, which I found was all that was necessary. I tried removing ‘Preview Pane’ but that did not solve the problem either.

Trev, I can’t see that Adobe Acrobat is the problem, as it is not running when trying to delete the files, it seems to be File Explorer itself.

OK, I removed Adobe Acrobat and opened files in Windows which seems to use ‘Edge’. Preview no longer available in File Explorer, however pdf files will now delete normally! Go figure!

I do like File Preview so will try reinstalling Acrobat DC and report back.

    • in reply to: Boot Times – Restart vs Power Off/Manual Start #1525782

Thanks, BruceR for the explanation and Link.
So Fast Startup involves a form of Hibernation writing a file and recovering it when you next power-on.

I found ‘Fast Startup’ is ON by default, and I tried unchecking it and the times for Restart, and Power off/Manual Restart were then much the same at about 100secs.

      For Windows 10:-
Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings > ‘Choose What the Power Buttons do’

Then click on ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’ to allow a change to ‘Turn on fast startup (Recommended)’ in Shutdown settings.

      Then ‘Save changes.’

I had noticed that Windows updates had not been ‘taking’ with a Shutdown and Manual Restart. I guess this explains why.
Always do a Restart to update Windows Update.

    • Have you tried a 3rd party tool like: http://www.partitionwizard.com/?
I found it easy to use and it did all I wanted when reallocating disk space.

If you get a ‘Disk must be formatted before you can use’ message, the fix disk errors option worked for me without losing any data.
