AskWoody LoungerA range of freeware and software choices can be found at http://download.cnet.com/downloads/1,10150…up&cn=&ca=10001. The user ratings should help in making a choice.

AskWoody LoungerIt wouldn’t hurt either to uncheck the unneeded resource hogs in Startup: run, enter msconfig, click the Startup tab. An excellent, comprehensive resource for identifying unneeded startup applications is at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm.I was having similar resource problems with ME, and using this information helped significantly.

AskWoody LoungerNot sure how effective the grammar checker in Word 2000 is, but a comprehensive study by Caroline Hast shows the Word 97 grammar checker to be of dubious quality. She fed thousands of sentences into the grammar checker and found that the reliability, depending on the type of grammatical error, ranged between 70 and 40%. My advice: use a grammar handbook.

AskWoody LoungerI just posted this link to the Win 98 forum, but it also applies here. A good resource to identify and eliminate unnecessary resources:

AskWoody LoungerI had a similar problem running Win 98 SE with 256MB of memory. After paring down the startup to the bare minimum, defragging regularly, etc., etc. and still having the system bog down, I decided to disable McAfee. What a difference! I then switched to Norton antivirus 2002, which doesn’t have nearly the effect on system resources–now it stays about 60-70%.
A good web resource for figuring out what can be elminated from startup:

AskWoody LoungerThanks, Leif. I deleted the key and got the Documents shortcut back.

AskWoody LoungerPuzzling. I never view messages in the preview pane. If I recognize the sender, I open the message. If not, I just click once on the from/subject line, click delete, and it’s gone.

AskWoody LoungerGoing to Google and searching under “vmm32” provides a whole host of sites that should help with the problem.
