I’ve used jv16 PowerTools for years. Although I can’t provide any hard data about changes in speed, etc. on my OS, a number of users swear to its effectiveness. Just cutting out the bloat (obsolete and unneeded data, broken file references, etc.) and compacting the registrary can deter later OS problems, IMHO. The program has 23 tools, some of which, of course, are provided by other software, but there are tools that I haven’t seen in other software. Also, the automatic backup of the registry makes the program safe. There’s a 30-day free nag-free trial, and the full cost is US$30.

      Hans,
You’re probably aware of this site that has a comprehensive list of startup applications, but for others who might not know, go to Sysinfo.org. As of April, almost 17,000 applications listed.

Way late on joining this thread, but I thought I’d add my 2cents . I’ve used JkDefrag for several months and am pleased with it. And it’s free. One feature I like is the program’s ability to run optionally from a command line, where you have all kinds of options for defragging and sorting. The web site also has an extensive forum and FAQ section.

Thanks. But as I queried Big Al, what is the software included with the FreeAgent?

    • in reply to: External USB Drives #1127838

      Big Al,

The reviews of the Seagate 500GB are impressive. But I was curious about the software that comes with the drive. What is it supposed to do? (I have True Image and I’m not fully satisfied with it.)

      Great resource! bravo

    • in reply to: Accept changes? (Word 2002 ) #1123569

I open them directly from the email if I know the sender, which is usually the case. I’ll have to try saving them. I’ll let you know if that works. Thanks much.

    • in reply to: Accept changes? (Word 2002 ) #1123566

No, and the “save” option appears with every .doc attachment.

One review of Photosynth–in general, a positive one.

I also read the Consumers Reports article and was puzzled why Avast, which I use, wasn’t included in the rankings. The magazine is excellent as a guide to products, but when computers and software are involved, other, more technical reviews are better.

Curious. The link takes me directly to the table.

    • in reply to: Avast Alert! #1114689

Thanks, Big Al. According to this site, Avast has a record of “many” false positives. Makes me think about switching to AntiVir PE Premium.

    • in reply to: Norton Antivirus #1114044

Not exactly relevant to your concern with Norton, but every day my Avast anti-virus provides an update to the virus data base. Today, there were two updates. A brief daily popup/download is more preferred for protection than a weekly notification might provide.
