Ignore the fixit and follow the diagnostic procedure outlined in the text.

Sorry Jerry, I was unclear. I did follow those instructions and still can’t identify the problem source. At some point I’ll just have to bit the bullet and reinstall as Clint suggested.

What didn’t work? Did the app fail in clean boot mode or did you just run the fixit?

      Jerry

Fixit ran fine but it didn’t fix my problem.

as you say your friend that sent you the app was using win server 2008 which I think is not supported in standard win 7 64bit maybe this is reason for failure, maybe not.

All running on Server2008 says is that the app called cpu_time without any problems. Getting the same answers would be a different issue.

The app is an R&D one. As I said we exchanged executables for testing.

I was trying to avoid the clean install you suggest since it is extremely time consuming. Are there no other approaches?

Unfortunately Jerry that didn’t do the trick. Thanks for the suggestion.

An Intel compiler works. A PGI compiler experiences the problem. As noted above the problem appears to be due to my machine, not the compiler itself.

A little more experimentation shows that the app works when I boot into the safe mode.

Anyone with experience on how to identify the conflict? I assume this shows a conflict with a driver or non-OS app?

      Ted,

I can’t absolutely guarantee that it isn’t infected but I run AV, malware, firewall etc. protection on all my machines (and they are up to date). A scan for all the potential problems doesn’t show anything.

I think it is time to try a repair followed a clean install if it comes to that.

Thanks for your suggestions folks! 😀

      Jerry,

Unfortunately too long ago to figure out. I’ve got server backups but the same problem, i.e. I’m not sure when her problem started.

I have uninstalled IE9 and the advanced window now exists but it looks nothing like the one on my machine. By that I mean just a couple boxes, not a long list that is normal to me.

      I’ve tried this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/85243-internet-options-add-remove-advanced-tab.html both options 1 and 2.

With option 2 I can’t open gpedit.msc The system seems to think the is a very early version of IE installed, it is IE9.

Had an old server backup (image) that I could access then used the DVD repair. That of course by-passed the “bad key” issue.

If that hadn’t worked I was ready to call M$, realizing that has never been productive in the past.

Combo of Joe and Client links.

      Up and running, thanks.

Thanks gentlemen, it’ll take me a little while to work through the various suggestions.

Booting from upgrade disk. Because the original XP is gone, the upgrade option doesn’t work and you must use custom install. It does all the copying (~30 minutes) then reboots for user name, computer name and password before it asks for the key — then it says bad key and exits.

Yes and has worked up to the point I’ve needed this clean install. Microsoft validated it and I’ve been regularly updating with no problems.
