How so very disappointing. After all the ballyhoo and the angst of trying to download this fix, I managed to run it.

Size of WINSXS before running fix 7.60Gb – size after running fix 7.60Gb WHAT A WASTE OF TIME.

More interesting is how Joe managed to save upto 4GB amd how Woody can claim 1 to 3 GB.

I have trying to download this and MS require a Windows Genuine Validation. Alas poor Microsoft can’t even get that right. Click on validate download and run and get the error message that this version is no longer supported.

MS suggested downloading Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool which doesn’t produce any validation code.

      HELP PLEASE

Going right back to the days of MS-DOS, Microsoft have followed the pattern of a ‘good’ operating system being followed by a lemon. On that basis Windows 8 will not last for very long.

From what I’ve seen the interface was designed by my 4 yo grandaughter.

      Thanks but that didn’t work

    • in reply to: How to auto-populate contents page? #1282820

I am an accountant who uses Excel to produce final accounts for presentation to clients. To use Word would be like me going back over 10 years when I used to use it for final accounts. Excel is soooo much easier.

I only have clients accounts and I don’t think they (the clients) would be very happy to see their accounts on line.

I suppose all I am really asking is there a way of accessing the contents of a footer?

I managed to solve this one myself.

In the same way you can format mergefields with the @ key, you can get Word to recognise formatted data.

adding @”ddMMyy” to a date field will force Word to display the result for 29 May 2011 as 290511. Now if you want to skip any records not dated 29 May 2011 place the following rule at start of document:

      { SKIPIF {MERGEFIELD Date @”ddMMyy” }290511}

      Curly brackets added with Ctrl+F9

Thanks, but I managed to load the program. I did by by using safe mode. I have no idea why that worked but it did and everyone is happy.

The strange thing is I could load and run other Programs. I just think the this program is just somehow super sensitive.

      Thanks anyway

Sorry forgot to say OS is 32 bit Windows 7

Thanks for the replies, most of which I already implement.

I only have 3 programs in ‘startup’
All the video tricks of Aero and the like are diabled.
I never knew about the scheduled running of defrag (but that doesn’t explain the other 6 and a half days)
I haven’t had time to trawl through all the artcles suggested by Clint, but that looks hopeful.

Looks like another computer re-build for me!

      Thanks for the replies.

After following the HP example, it would appear that this is now included in the main body of Excel. An additional benefit is that the Office Button → Prepare → Edit Links to files option only appears when there is an external link.

      Thanks for the tip

    • in reply to: I NEED HELP: Windows 7 Crash #1215541

Well, what a difference a day makes!

Didn’t touch the machine for best part of 48 hours (see I do have a life) only for it to boot up correctly.

So, what went wrong? I went through all the suggestions, ideas, etc. and most if not all the probs/solutions I have come accross before.

Still no idea why it crashed and even less idea why it came back. One thing I think I can rule out is a heat related issue, the machine has now been on for over 3 hours.

Just noticed something very peculiar. Daylight saving started here in UK early Sunday morning when the clocks went forward by 1 hour. Now, before the crash it was registering the correct time (GMT) and I just noticed it has advanced the clock 2 hours and it is saying the next adjustment is due in October. I doubt whether this had anything to do with the crash, but you never know.

Also interesting to note that GMT has now become UTC.

      Thanks for the interest

      David
