No, it was definitely an MS number I called

    • in reply to: Was it Microsoft? #1539875

I did use both the MS site and their telephone number. However, I am a firm believer that what is done by man can be undone by man. With all the attacks, hacks, phishes, etc around today I would not be surprised if the dite I was ‘talking’ to was an intercept.

And I thought to keep things simple.

Single disk, one partition for clean install.

Done that and it was no help

    • in reply to: Windows 8.1 Update #1514566

      I have solved the problem.

You cannot download these patches using Chrome. I better not say anything else as I don’t want to be accused of posting on the wrong section of the forum.

I am not double posting. My post here is a specific request re Windows 8.1. My post in Windows 10 is expressing my concerns.

As a retired geek you should know nothing is given away for free.

Google/Chrome users ‘pay’ for the software by being bombarded with advertising.

    • in reply to: Chrome, Java, and low expectations #1500160

You are missing my point slighty. Whether I can run or not run Java is of not much consequence to me. What I objecting to is the arrogance of Google to do so with saying so.

Intenso have admitted it was their drive causing the problem

Seen that link before, went there, tried it and it didn’t work. So it appears that I am stuck with an out of date os before I even start.

Acer will take no responsibility for any software sold with their machines, retailer will not give me a refund as (you guessed it) faulty software is not a good enough reason. Amount too small to bother taking to court and Microsoft couldn’t care a toss.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO NOW?

    • in reply to: deleting patch installation files #1417734

No, that’s just where the cursor happen to alight. I’m logged on as me

I attach 2 files, 1 showing that the patch IS and the 2nd showing my permissions.

      Are they correct?

Joe: I press cleanup and wait until it has finished and I still can’t find Clean Up System Files

BATcher: It might be “just a minor irritation” to you, but I have an SSD and the directory is taking a large proportion of the drive.

      Yes it is installed
      Yes I have administrative permissions

When I run Cleanup it shows the files being searched for but it still isn’t being shown

Think I’ll take the easy solution – retire and throw the machine out the window

    • in reply to: deleting patch installation files #1416638

After installing the patch, I rebooted and got the reported result of totally nothing.

When I booted this morning I got the message about installing updates (which I didn’t get yesterday). Tried the disc cleanup and the Windows Update Cleanup option has now disappeared.

Joe, I can’t find “”Clean Up System Files” mentioned in step 3 of my original post?”
