AskWoody LoungerSomething else that might work for you –
1. Create a subfolder under the Inbox call it “Daily Deals” or whatever
2. click on one on these emails in your Inbox
3. In the Ribbon, click Rules, then “Always Move Messages from yadda yadda”
4. Pick the new folderThat will deliver them straight into there.
To finish the job, you can right click the folder, and set Auto Archive on that folder to “Permanently Delete”.
Then you never need to delete them by hand again. -

AskWoody LoungerHi Jon,
You could backup to an external and then copy that into SkyDrive, I suppose. But is it necessary? As posters have said above, the cloud is “for when all else is lost but I’ve survived and am restoring something from different location”. It’s going to use a lot of net bandwidth to backup a system image.
For me, my cloud backups are for my customer’s data, the stuff they really care about. I don’t reckon system images are worth backing up to the internet. But I don’t get bushfires cyclones or floods where I live

AskWoody LoungerIt is bad enough that all of the Big companies are already spying on us without our permission, now these companies want us to surrender our information voluntarily… I’m very Leary about surfing the Internet today because everybody and their Mother is spying today. I’m truly surprised that anyone has fallen for this Cloud backup.
Paranoid, much?

AskWoody LoungerWhat about off-site backup to an external drive on a friend’s PC. Combines the advantages of cloud and external drive approaches. Didn’t see that mentioned. CrashPlan free is a very easy way to achieve this.

AskWoody LoungerAbout once every week or so, let the battery run down all the way
Do not do this with a Lithium Ion battery. These will be damaged by repeatedly running flat.
The ideal level for a Li-Ion battery is around 50% charge. Some high end laptops have an option to maintain the charge at 75% and 50% charge levels. For the rest of us, keeping it charged is the best approach, and try to avoid going below 10 or 20%.
On the other hand the worst thing you can do is leave a fully charged battery in a hot car. A battery in this state has a full life expectancy of a months instead of several years.

AskWoody LoungerMy impression is that Briefcase is on the way out. I am surprised it is even offered in Win 7. There are many other sync options available. If you would like suggestions, please ask.

AskWoody LoungerLooks like they have fixed it now. The link given on the first page has changed, and is now 404, the working link is
windowssecrets.com/introduction/the-windows-secrets-newsletter-site-hacked/and it is available for all not just paid subscribers. I imagine they are just waiting for Tracey to return to update the link in that post.

AskWoody LoungerYou asked about removing installed programs, and Clint’s advice pretty much covers it I’d say.
What about checking your programs that run at startup? There’s always good savings to be made there. Msconfig is good enough for most purposes. Why not post up another screenshot of the list? The worst thing about msconfig is the window is not resizeable. (C’mon Microsoft, how hard can it be ?!?). That’s where other downloadable tools have the edge.

AskWoody LoungerThanks I.M.O.G., that is exactly what we were wondering about, in terms of how it was possible. I’ll be upfront now and reveal one of the websites under my control does not limit the number of attempts either. You can be sure I’ll be fixing that now. Although, I do wish it were likely to have the same level of page hits and attention that the W.S. site does
I have now edited my post and withdrawn my remark as it is no longer true. Please feel free to edit yours to “unquote” me (is there such a word?) if you wish.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 26, 2012 at 7:21 pm in reply to: Word 2003 locks up when “pasting” from a web page #1350437Oddly enough, printer drivers and video drivers can cause this.
Allow me to make a suggestion which is both a workaround, and a really useful tool that i use many times a day:
Install the PureText tool – to allow pasting as plain, unformatted text.
Either google for “puretext” or go straight to http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/
The program is extremely light-weight and unobtrusive (and free). Set it to start automatically with Windows, and set the Hotkey to Windows key-V.Then instead of Ctrl-V or right-click-paste, press Windows key and V together. This will convert the clipboard to plain text and paste it.
When you are writing a Word document or email, you typically want the font and font size and colour etc of your work, you don’t want whatever the website happens to be in.
Hope this helps
P.S. I am using the Win 32 (x86) version no problems on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine, as well as at home on a 32 bit XP. -

AskWoody LoungerIsn’t this horse dead yet?
Edited. My comments at the time are no longer relevant now that we have clarity on the details of the attack. Thanks to W.S. for revealing all they have.

AskWoody LoungerYour description started with one of your admin userid’s being hacked by “brute force password cracking”. What do you mean by this? Did they already have the hashed password file? Because no site these days allows multiple failed password attempts, so brute force should not work. Are you sure this wasn’t started some other way?
This. Was the account already compromised, or was it a brute force attack? How many bad passwords login attempts does the site allow? If there is a limit on the number of attempts, how were they able to brute force?
I can’t help feeling we are being fed nonsense by the WS team to whitewash their incompetence.

AskWoody LoungerI can’t send or receive. I think this may have happened when I archived this folder. Any clues??
What happens when you try?
Have a look in Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings > Define Send/Receive Groups
then Edit on the group (probably “All Accounts”)
and check what is listed in the Accounts panel on the left. You can click Account Properties from here. -

AskWoody LoungerHard Disk Sentinel v4.10
This one is free and usefull, but will require a fee for unlocking other “advanced” features.Good tip. +1 for HDSentinel from me. Originally got this when a drive started to play up. Tried the WD program but it was unpleasant to use and wouldn’t work with my other drive, a different brand. I’ve since purchased a copy of HDSentinel because it was so useful in my work but there is no requirement to do so.
As an aside, one surprise from HDSentinel is that it alerted me to the high temperature in a Seagate external drive, which was well above Seagate’s own design standard for their drive! I removed the shiny black plastic surround and now use it “naked” and it keeps 20 degrees C cooler. Probably did the warranty in, but these things never fail inside warranty period anyway, right?
