I think it is very possible that my normal.dot is corrupted. Everything else on my system seems to be. I actually tried to delete my normal.dot but was denied and I can’t move it from the windows templates folder either. I have tried to save Normal.dot after changing the margins but of course I can’t remove the existing Normal dot or over write it to save the new one in it’s place. 🙁

Thanks Kevin. I have no trouble settings margins but I can’t find the default button you mentioned. I can only find the customise which asks to save to normal.dot. As soon as I go back to Word the great wide margins are still there. 🙁 Can you describe or post a screen shot of the default button for ’97 please. I see in Word 2000 that I can change the view to ’97.

You could try DBXtract .dbx file extractor from http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/DBXtract.htm

I ask those sending me word processed attachments to make sure they have saved it in Rich Text Format. That way it doesn’t seem to matter what word processing program was used. To Save a Word document in RTF format On the File menu, click Save As. In the Save as type box, click Rich Text Format (*rtf). Still this method won’t help you with Excel though.

Could it be that perhaps you have an unread message in those folders? Go to Edit and click Mark All Read and see if this changes the folder.

Ah! yes I see both those options are checked on this computer so I’ll make sure they are both checked on the other machine. Thank you very much Melinda.

I haven’t bothered putting my messages back into OE but have left them in a folder I extracted them to on C: However, I just tried the drag method on a couple of mine. All I did was open OE, Inbox and minimise to taskbar, then opened the folder with you messages and dragged the message into the minimised OE icon in taskbar. This restored OE and when the envelope outline was where I wanted it I just release the mouse. I found out about this tool in the Gibson Research Corp news groups. news://news.grc.com

Thank you MJ. Out of 6 computers all using OE6 I only have the one which I can’t get the tabs visible with when I use the HTML option or Rich Text.

There are no tabs at all at the bottom of the window no Edit Tab, Source Tab or Preview Tab. It is like the message window is set for plain text but in actual fact it isn’t. I have tried setting it through Tools>Options>Send tab and checking HTML as well as making sure when I have the Create Message that it is definitely in Rich Text. Still no tabs at all appear. I can embed using the OE Wizard but I like to do a copy and paste directly from Notepad rather than put everything into the stationery folder.

Thanks MJ. OE meets all my needs as I use Notepad to write the scripts and then copy and paste into the source of message. My niece has a later version of OE6 and I can’t configure it to show the Edit>SOURCE>PREVIEW at the bottom of the Create Message window. Any tips? Yes it is set to HTML.

No sorry. I changed from Outlook to Outlook Express just to make stationery.

In new message Tools>Rich Text then Tools>Background>sound. Browse to music folder and choose a midi assuming of course that you have a folder with midi files or very small wav files. There are numerous sites on the web where you can find midi music.

I had the same thing happen to me with OE5.5 so I upgraded to OE6 and the folder was still blank. Then I was given this to try and it worked for me with OE6. Here is a little clip from the sight.

      DBXtract .dbx file extractor

      Frequently Asked Questions and Tips

      DBXtract
      Version 2.04 Updated 6/21/00
      PROGRAM FEATURES
OE5 has a proprietary binary format that makes archiving individual
messages difficult. In addition, a number of people have indicated
that their message folders have become corrupted and OE can not read
them. Consequently, they have lost all the messages in that folder.
DBXtract.exe extracts all mail and news messages from individual dbx
files. After extracting the messages one can drag them from a Windows
Explorer folder into an Outlook Express mail folder.
