i tried for a while, liked it and have been using it since. quite satisfied

does anyone have something to comment about it?

    • in reply to: to run TWO W7 OSs. #1593729

      hello everyone again;
before proceeding with new partition and boot manager, i kept browsing the net, and bumped into an old [WINDOWS SECRETS] post, which i PDF printed and i’m attaching.
obviously, the issue is not new.
one of the replies recommends VIRTUALIZATION.
i feel more comfortable with it, given that i used it before with W2000 in a scenario similar to the one now; so i decided to give it a try.
downloaded the Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg, and installed it.
      first surprise:
W7 x64 doesn’t allow W7 x32 in the virtualization, and recommends going to XP; which in my case was favorable, as the old stuff i have, i DO know it did run OK in XP.
it even offers an XP suited for actualization.
proceeded accordingly, an now i have the old programs enabling me use of the h/w as desired.
furthermore, everything in the computer is accessible from XP desktop.
from my personal point of view, and in this particular case of mine, i believe this is better that having to boot into two OSs, as it was my original intention.
nevertheless want to THANKS YOU ALL PEOPLE for your replies.
      regards,

      daniel rozenberg.

      1) Yes.
      2) No.
      3) Win7 32bit (x86) should be able to work fine with your documents and other files on your existing DATA partition.
      4) 64bit (x64) and 32bit (x86) has to do more with the performance-level and memory-capacity of software/programs. Generally files you create under Win7 64bit will be just the same as those you create under Win7 32bit.

But to run both 32bit and 64bit OSs on the same computer you will need to use a “boot manager” program. I have been using BootIt Bare Metal for many years with excellent results and strongly recommend BootItBM.

      thanks for tour reply.
when i implement it, will report results accordingly.

The COA stickers – OEM, MAR and Retail – are specifically designed to tear once applied in order to prevent people removing them and transferring them to another device. If it’s a genuine refurb then the refurb COA should be attached in addition to the original OEM COA… not on top.

      Hope this helps…

      it most certainly did help.

      from your previous
On the other hand, OEM manufacturers (who had to provide their own branded OEM optical disks) wanted to reduce their costs by providing a ‘recovery’ partition instead.

it confirmed something i was searching while your first reply arrived; lemme explain:
lenovo has a feature called Access Help, which can be downloaded.
i searched for operating system recovery and got what i printed into a PDF and i’m attaching.
i backup the machine [religiously!!!] every Saturday morning, using EaseUS Todo Backup, AND on Sundays [also religiously!!!] to an external hdd using W7 backup.
furthermore, my hdd has another partition lodging all what is data and my work; which i also copy to an external drive.
knowing now that the catastrophic instance is manufacturer considered, and having a “guide” of what to do and expect, comes to make me think i’ll be able to sleep a LITTLE better; because i believe i have found an answer to my original question to this post.

thank you all people for all your replies.
      i’ll mark the issue solved

[QUOTE=Coochin;1078618]Since it has Win7 your Lenovo laptop should have a “Certificate of Authenticity” sticker somewhere underneath which should have the 25-character OEM “Product Key” specific to your laptop.

If so you could ask around your friends/contacts or a friendly local computer shop for a Win7 Pro x64 install DVD you could use if you need to reinstall Win7.[/QUOTE]

      thanks for your reply.
i looked underneath, but no key code, nevertheless, being a refurbished machine, there is sticker labeling it, so, which i’ll remove it tomorrow to see if it is there.
btw, in the mean time, i looked at the manual i had downloaded online, and gives the p/n of the dvd and recovery disk set.
      subsequently, phoned lenovo support.
      they’ll sell it for u$s 44.00 + s/h.
will see if i go that way.

    • in reply to: How to completely reset Windows Update #1564742

i am FIRMLY CONVINCED that we are NOT Microsoft customers.
      WE are Microsoft HOSTAGES !!!!
if i was a bit younger and had the time and energies, i would go to Linux Mint or Ubuntu.
i tried Ubuntu once, but my difficulty was to import into its Thunderbird and Mozilla the respective settings now i have in the W7 machine i’m running. their Febe was difficult to configure, and i gave up. maybe, sometime in the future in one of those other machines i have sleeping in some shelf.

the wu drove me crazy for several weeks.
cpu at 100% slowed the machine considerably.
my “band aid” solution: i am running the machine without wu.
occasionally, i run a batch file which enable wu, then disables it again.
it’s not a solution, but helped me survival.

after this last article, will give a try to the whole 12 , and see what happens.

      thank you very much

      Hi Hans,

by further browsing the net, in this site

      http://superuser.com/questions/944574/windows-update-doesnt-work-and-consumes-100-of-cpu-win7-sp1

; i saw comments and exchanges between people affected by this situation.

in you original (first) post, you indicated that you’e ALSO changing your mobo.

question: is your new mobo having a cpu single or DUAL core?

my pc (which crawls because of Windows Update Service kindapping 100% of the cpu), has AMD64 (single core), while my laptop [no problem there], runs an intel i5 (quad core).

i don’t know if this might be relevant to you, but HTH

      Hi Bundaburra,

      THANK you VERY MUCH !!!!!
I copied the text of your reply, created a batch file and run it.
I works WONDERS, furthermore, relieves the having to start WUS on Saturdays.
BTW: i had not run a batch file since the early 90s, when we were using MS DOS (prior to W95), and every change we were doing required an editing of something called “autoexec.bat” (which i believe later became the current registry).
this brought me back memories fro many decades ago (i’m a retiree, 76 years YOUNG).

      THANKS AGAIN.

      daniel rozenberg.

    • in reply to: Slow Win 7 Ultimate x64 #1563427

      i’ve had a similar problem.
i recently upgraded from W7 home premium 32 bit to 64.
there were MANY issues, as not all previous applications would work with 64.
after solving (and patching these), i still found the machine TREMENDOUSLY SLOW, to open applications and general dragging and moving icon / folders / files between the screens of the two monitors i’m using.
finally, a glance at task manager “found the culprit”
100 % CPU usage, due to windows update service [WUS] “kidnapping the cpu”
in MY CASE, in spite of exploring the web , m$ site, downloading heir sipposed cure (KB3102810) for the problem, still i haven’t been able to get a DECENT situation.
MY patch (rather compromise solution?) is > task manager > services and find that service, stop and disable it
      .
of course, i don’t get the AUTOMATIC UPDATES from m$ (unless i restart, in which case WUS will restart).
as i use thunderbird as email client, i set an event reminder to restart-enable back WUS on Saturdays; just to check what updates might be available, if any.
life goes on…. and i’ve tried to make the best out of it….

      thanks, Maude.

      i’ll go to 64.

also thanks for your reference about Google Novabench; which i’ll give a try.

    • in reply to: to 64 bit from 32? #1561984

Depending on the actual available memory, you can gain some memory by going to 64 bit from 32. This can get your 4 GB RAM almost usable in full by the OS, while the same cannot be said for the 32 bit version.

Whether you can benefit from this or not, that’s another thing, since it depends on what applications you use on a regular basis. This means going 64 bit can actually help with performance, since there is more RAM available, and the use of virtual memory and the associated disk access, can diminish a bit. As I said, though, this really depends on your usage.

i don’t use applications requiring large use of memory, so i’ll remain with the 32 bit version, and close this issue.

thank you all people for your comments.

    • in reply to: to 64 bit from 32? #1561948

      Hi Berton & Sudo15;

thank you very much for your comments and guidance.
yes, i realize that a total back up is absolutely necessary before installing the 64 bit version in the pc.
that hassle is just enough for me to ADHERE to the KISS principle…and will remain where i’m now.

      btw:
thanks for those links to learn about my system properties and modules.
i would like to contribute with two i have used, one of them is Belarc, and the other , is Everest Profiler.

      thanks again

    • in reply to: 100% CPU but NO APPLICATION open #1551994

i DO APOLOGIZE to the forum:
      my UTTER STUPIDITY
      lemme explain:
every Saturday, i regularly , i backup my C: drive and my work & data (in the other partition of my HDD) to an external Western Digital 200Gb Passport external HDD using EaseUS TodoBackup; plugging it into a USB port.
inadvertently, after the backup, i left plugged in.
as soon as i removed it, the CPU usage came back to less of 100%.

    • in reply to: 100% CPU but NO APPLICATION open #1551941

this problem started this morning after MS automatically downloaded 38 updates (it took 2 1/2 hours the reboot and configuration).
so, did a system restore, and turned auto updates OFF, they will be reported to me and I’ll choose which ones to take.
i ADMIT, it’s NOT the solution of the problem, just a mitigation, but at this SPECIFIC moment, i don’t have time to learn Process Monitor (i downloaded it, as well as a tutor on how to use it).
THANKS everybody for your help and assistance.

      dr
