The message clipping problem in gmail has been around for years and AFAIK no one has come up with a solution yet.

I tried Settings, Conversation View, Off but that didn’t help.

I forwarded the message to my Hotmail account and there I get the whole message without clipping.

Guess I’ll change the Windows Secrets newsletter mailing address to my Hotmail account.

As if you needed it, here’s another vote for a follow-up with REVO et al.

      Thanks for an eye-opening article.

Thanks for your replies. I probably was installing a program that required the latest version. I’m just surprised that Secunia PSI didn’t catch it.

      Thanks for your reply Joe.

I haven’t run any keyboard mapping software but that got me thinking. My MS keyboard has a Function Lock key and the alternate functionality for F2 is (you guessed it) Undo. I must have inadvertently pressed the Function Lock key at some point and that’s why I was getting an Undo instead of a New Game.

I inquired at Sunbelt and got this reply:

Yes, Ad-Aware does use some of our technology in their products. If you no longer want to use Ad-Aware then there should be no problem removing this driver. If you run into any further trouble with this then it would be best to contact Lavasoft’s support as they will be more familiar with their product.

      Thanks for your post Gerald.

I did find that sbapifs.sys was associated with Sunbelt S/W but I’ve never used any of their products. However, it was that information that led me to uninstalling the AA beta in early December and subsequently the retail version in late December. I suspect that AA is using some of Sunbelt’s code but I have no way of knowing for sure.

As for malware, that was my first consideration. I ran a thorough scan with MS Security Essentials, then Malwarebytes and Spybot and my system was clean.

Great article. I intend to try a couple of these programs that I hadn’t heard about before.

I have tried Fences and I loved what it did for my desktop … But … I quit using it because it interfered with my Bigfish games. I worked with Bigfish tech support at great length to come up with a work-around. We were able to come up with a partial solution (worked with some games but not all) but in the end it was too much hassle.

      Great article.

I did run into a problem on my HP (Windows 7 Pro). I ran Powercfg /energy from the Command Prompt. No problem at that point. When I tried to open the report in my browser, no joy. I checked my typing several times and made no error in entering it in the brower. It just did not want to open for some reason.

I solved this problem by a going to start/Computer/C (drive)/Windows/System32/ and then scrolling down to where I finally found the fiesty file. Once pinned down it cooperated by promply displaying the page in my browser when I clicked on it.

I tried this method as well but so far without success. Firefox tells me it can’t find the file and when I try to open it with IE, IE opens to my home page. I really wanted to resolve this since the analysis shows 9 errors, 8 warnings and 14 informational results. Well, once again, Google is your friend. This post http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/18741-how-do-i-view-energy-report.html said to copy the report out of the system32 folder before opening it. I tried that and … problem solved.

Yes, it would be a good idea to discuss the security implications of any download. However, your issue is with Nirsoft, and they have a page that discusses the problem here:
      Nirsoft blog about Antivirus Companies

      Good luck!

      Kevin

Sorry Kevin. How is this an issue with Nirsoft?

Microsoft Security Essentials flagged the same 2 files on my system when I downloaded the Nirsoft Utilities. It was easy for me to “allow” the Passview file because I had a sense of why it was flagged and felt comfortable letting it stand. However, I could not find such a file as “Trojan:Win32/Bladi!rts” in the list of files being downloaded.

So I went to the MS Malware Protection site and here’s what it says: “Trojan:Win32/Bladi!rts is a name used for trojan detections that have been added to Microsoft signatures after advanced automated analysis.” and “There are no common symptoms associated with this threat. Alert notifications from installed antivirus software may be the only symptom(s).” Pretty informative isn’t it.

Then I tried submitting a sample for analysis but I can’t find the Bladi!rts file on my computer even though I “allowed” it in MSE.

It seems that some file that’s part of the Nirsoft download has been flagged as Critical by a security software routine, given a generic name and we’re told that it’s asymptomatic. What’s wrong with this picture?

      Regards,

      Dan
