    • in reply to: Mapping Network Drives (Vista Home Premium) #1082266

I did find a support note on Maxtor’s site (it’s a Maxtor NAS drive) that said that Vista by default only allows NTLMv2 authentication to external servers, but the linux operating system in the NAS box can’t handle this. There’s a registry fix (for Home versions of Vista) or a secpol.msc change for the business versions, that enables LM and NTLM authentication.

This went some of the way to fixing the problem. I also found that using the
Map Network Drive” tab from windows explorer still had problems, but navigating to the drive from the “Network” icon, and then right clicking on the “map network drive” option was more successful in allowing me access.

I now have the problem that I want to map a public share folder and a private folder on the NAS to two different drives but Vista is telling me that I can’t have multiple accesses to the share with the same user name – see jpg attached.

      This is so frustrating.

      Thanks Leif

I’ll give this a try over the weekend – looks like I’m going to need to set aside a fair chunk of time!

    • Going back to the “Dribble” process, I took a look at the AutoUpdate log file. It seems it does go out and grab stuff to append to a (presumably) growing file hidden somewhere in the machine. One thing I “think” I gleaned from this is that no matter how long you leave your computer on, connected to the outside world (DSL in my case) nothing appears to happen to the dribble UNLESS IE is running. Is that really the case? I left the machine on overnight with nothing running and the log was empty for that entire period. I launched IE and left it for another few hrs. When I checked the log again there was a mass of stuff going on.

So it seems to me that there’s a crucial bit of information hidden in the MS info that “should” say “..all the while you are connected to the internet WITH OUR PRODUCT..”

I gave up and did the manual download. 4PM Saturday afternoon (California time). Don’t know how long it took as I stepped away, but I’d guess 20-30 mins tops.

Now all I have to do is pluck up courage to install it wink

    • Thanks Joe – I’ll give it a try.

    • I think I have the same question as Jim at the start of this post, but I think his phrasing is not correct. What I want to know is “How long is this dribble down process going to take?” . The installation of SP 2 on your machine needs human intervention – you WILL KNOW when it’s ready to install, and therefore when it’s fully installed. I want to know how much longer I’ve got to wait before it’s ready to start installing. Auto Updates gave me the “ready to download” message last week, I’ve had the computer on-line for about 2-4 hrs/day (it’s my home machine) on a DSL line every day since. I see no evidence of network activity etc. that might even give me a clue that stuff is coming down. snail

Thought – is my DSL hardware firewall blocking incoming traffic?? confused

    • in reply to: Windows Explorer not showing all files (XP Home) #720596

Actually, in XP (since winzip is fully integrated in the OS), a ZIP file appears to be treated like a subfolder, so it shows up in the left-hand pane (as a subfolder) as well as in the right-hand pane as contents in the main folder. My problem was that only SOME of the zips in the RH pane were showing in the LH pane.

Embarrasingly enough (Thank you Windows), it’s not doing it today!! blush

One other thing I did discover is that the behavior is different if you click on a Zip file in either the left or the right panes. I expect this is intentional so, in the hopes of this being beneficial to others, here’s what happens.

Click on a Zip in the left hand pane and the contents are visible in the right, just like it was a standard opened folder. Contents can be copied or moved to other folders and un-zip on the fly as they go.

Click on a zip in the right hand pane and you will launch another instance of explorer with the “Extract All Files” option, which will launch the “UnZip Wizard” to assist in the extraction / moving of the files.

So, whichever way you want to perform the task, you have the choice.

    • in reply to: Upgradig to SP3 trouble (Office 2000) #719405

I have a similar problem (although without the error messages). Office Upgrade goes through the motions, reads stuff from the CD, then hangs and tells me the install was unsuccessful – without any other explanation. One thought I had was that the machine has Office 2000 installed from it’s CD, but the version of Outlook 2K was installed from a separate CD, installed before the Office 2K install. Is this the problem? I did a similar update on my other PC, which was also set up the same way, and recall that Update asked for the Outlook CD separately during the process. Should I try unloading Outlook and reloading from the Office 2K CD??
