Why not install both operating systems and then change the drive letters? So let XP and Win7 assign whatever they want and then adjust them to what you want.

You’d have to do that before you start installing anything, of course.

If you are awake or want to be on July 8 at 4 a.m., at 5 minutes and 6 seconds past 4…

It will be 04:05:06 07/08/09 (obviously, specific date format)

      What about 12:34:56 07/08/09?

      Cooking? Bah.

My favorite part of the day is when I get to light stuff on fire and watch it explode

OK, thanks for the heads up.

Okay, I just checked: we’re both right.

Lounge mail is being sent through our servers, but it’s our mail server – which is quite separate from our web server. Mail here should be working perfectly fine.

Seems we’re hosted in that particular facility: that would be Seattle WA (PDT/GMT-7) not Washington DC
They say it should be another couple hours (from now), but then they also said it would probably be back by 1pm (that was >4 hours ago).

Our server guy (Tony) mentioned getting a temporary site up with a simple maintenance-style message but I haven’t heard if/how that’s coming along.

July 4 @ 3:30am: Seems we’ve got power back, but because of how we set up the maintenance page it’ll still be a bit before WindowsSecrets.com is back to normal. (why? because Tony’s asleep right now, silly… just like I should be)

The mail server used by WindowsSecrets and the Lounge is separate from the respective sites themselves, as far as I know.

I’m not too sure about that… I think we might be routing Lounge mail through our servers. Well, I’m pretty sure we were doing that at one point, but we may have changed the configuration since then.

    • in reply to: Firefox 3.0.11 released #1164684

Huh. I haven’t had a single problem with it. Tried the Java site and everything worked fine.

Any other examples of places that aren’t working?

    • This is eerily similar to a problem I had a couple weeks ago.

Your company/organization have any kind of mail filtering service? We use Postini and it was rejecting emails towards me because it didn’t know my account existed and was filtering out any unrecognized addresses.

I’m wondering if it’s a similar yet different bug because I’m seeing a few others on that page. Probably all related.

For me, it all starts around the comment by “The Plank” on June 5 2:19pm. That’s just a bit before halfway down.
      1. At his comment and below (actually starts at the posting date of the previous comment) clicking doesn’t work. If you hover over the text you should get the I-beam cursor (or whatever) but instead you get the pointer.
      2. Plus, hovering brings up the last tooltip you saw – from any open page, not just the current one.
      3. Since you can’t click you can’t select, but you can if you start selecting from a point before the bug appears (like in the previous comment). If you do, and try to drag the selection into the buggy area, the page jumps to the top. However Select All works, and Copy does include the text in the buggy area (and even the cropped/hidden text further on).
      4. Right-clicking the buggy area brings up the context menu, but at the top of my screen (using Win 7 RC). Horizontally it’s positioned correctly. If you select something that works and right-click the buggy area you get the normal right-click menu, not the one you should get when text is selected.

I’ve been using Secunia [acronym=”Personal Software Inspector”]PSI[/acronym] and have been satisfied so far. It doesn’t catch all the programs I have though, but it seems to get the most common/popular ones.

Windows Secrets did an article a week ago about this subject. They mention some Shavlik thing, the online version of the Secunia scanner, and some Belarc thing.

I used to have a free program from BigFix years ago, but it seems they’ve gone totally commercial now.

      Edit:
SPSI missed the update for foobar (have 0.9.6.0, current is 0.9.6.7) which Update Notifier caught. Also missed Java (have 6.0.13, current is 6.0.14). On the other hand, UN doesn’t list nearly as many programs as SPSI does.

      Edit 2:
SUMo saw that my 2.2.10 Apache is behind (currently 2.2.11) while SPSI hasn’t noticed yet. It also found an update to some generic Office component and some SoundMAX application (bundled with the audio drivers).
…And then it said Windows was behind, pointing at the location of the Migration Wizard. Since I’m using the Win 7 RC I’m not sure what it’s thinking…

If there was some way to schedule a scan with SUMo then I’d use it side-by-side with SPSI and UN.

      10. Which way does water go down the drain, counter or clockwise?

Either. The “correct” answer depends on which half of the globe you’re in, but the Coriolis effect has so little influence on the direction that you can twirl the water however you want. Any kind of consistency is due to imperfections: faucet off-center, bumps in the sink, etc.

21 On which playing card is the card maker’s trademark?

That one card they print that’s inserted before the other 52 cards, but I don’t think that’s the answer you were looking for

    • in reply to: Two puzzles for me (but probably not for others) #1163595

      Pardon my MSPAINT skills.

There are two ways of solving these questions: one uses the sine or cosine rule, one uses simpler trig.

      Sine/Cosine rule:
      1. You need to find the third length of the blue triangle (you know the other two: distance = speed * time). If you look at the bottom of the “illustration” you see a straight line. Angles on one side always add up to 180 degrees, and you can find out the angles in the yellow and green triangles (they’re both right-angled triangles so you have two of the three angles already).
Once you’ve found the angle for the bottom of the blue triangle you’ll have two side lengths and one angle. So now: sine rule or cosine rule?…

Simple trig (it’s up to you to see how you can do this for #1):
      2. I interpret “diverge” to mean that one fork will diverge from the original (straight) path by 67 degrees, not that both diverge away from each other by 67 degrees.
Either way, the two blue triangles have the same angles and, since the hikers are walking at the same speed, the same side lengths too. This also means that the two are right-angled triangles. You know one angle and one side length so use sine/cosine/tangent to get another side length…

    • Probably worth mentioning that “normal” dialog boxes (the ones that ask you to hit OK, or Yes/No, or Abort/Retry/Ignore) can be copied without any work. Just hit Ctrl+C.

Like if you try to run (via Start > Run) “nosuchprogram”, you’ll get a dialog saying it couldn’t be found. Ctrl+C produces

      Code:
      ---------------------------
       nosuchprogram
       ---------------------------
Windows cannot find 'nosuchprogram'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
       ---------------------------
       OK
       ---------------------------
    • in reply to: Command name for — character? #1162897

Thanks, Damian. Did you see my first follow-up question?

      1. Any idea where Num- is on a (Dell) laptop?

I saw it. I’m sure I did. Must have noticed.

It really depends. Sometimes the Numpad keys are written in orange (on top of normal keyboard keys). The Lenovo I have has them written in white on the bottom-right corner of the keys, but it might be orange in the top-right.

However it is, there’ll be a key with a – written on it (beside the normal -/_ key). To type it you’d use the Fn key by Ctrl and Alt.
So you’d be hitting Ctrl+Alt+Fn+(some key). For the Lenovo it’s the :/; key but in general it’s somewhere near ‘P’.

    • in reply to: Command name for — character? #1162894

He’s saying that there’s already a “shortcut” for it: Ctrl+Alt+Num-. You don’t need to assign one on your own.
