I don’t want to reactivate the hornet’s nest, but I’ve just realised there’s an approach that might be helpful when trying to replace single spaces (after the period) with double spaces. (I don’t think it’s been discussed before.)

      The basic approach is:

      * Replace all “period followed by one space” with “period followed by two spaces”. This fixes the “period plus one space” instances, but also converts “period plus two spaces” to “period plus three spaces”.

      * So, now replace all “period plus three spaces” with “period plus two spaces”. Repeat till no more hits are found.

It doesn’t address the other issues (like Ms. Smith), of course.

      Thanks, Gary. Intuitive, eh.

Thanks, Karen. Not pretty, but it’ll do.

There’s a useful feature in Word 2000 (don’t know when it first came in), which lets you get a full list of all keyboard settings.

      To access it:
      * Go to Tools/Macros/Macros
      * Change the “Macros in” panel to “Word Commands”
      * Select ListCommands from the list
      * Click the Run button

      Hi Phil

I attach the following macro to a toolbar button, and just click it if I feel the need to make a backup.

      Thanks, Phil

I tried renaming word.pip, but it still doesn’t get changed when I change the toolbar setting and close the document.

Anyway, I’ve solved the particular problem I was having by writing an AutoOpen macro to force the toolbar on (which was the original problem that started me on this little investigation).

      Thanks for your help, Phil

      Hi

I’ve noticed this thread a bit late in the piece, so my apologies if this has been covered before.

I’ve noticed similar things when copying-and-pasting into a new document:

    • in reply to: Toolbar won’t default to “visible” #511189

No, it doesn’t change, Phil.  The only file that changes is user.dat.

Thanks for the tip about security settings.

      A postscript.

Someone suggested using a free product called InkSwitch to try and solve a different problem (see the “Dial-up networking keeps trying to start” thread).

It not only resolved that problem, but fixed this one to!

InkSwitch seems to do the trick!

      Thanks.

      The facts
I’ve discovered it tries to start a DUN session twice for each graphic in the email.

It doesn’t appear to be connected to the retry settings. I’ve found that setting in two places (DUN, and Internet Explorer options (Connection/Settings/Advanced). They were different: retry=1 in DUN, retry=0 in IE.

I set retry=Off in DUN, and still get two DUN attempts per graphic.

      ————————
      Proposed solution
Turning WorkOffline=On in Outlook works, but only until the next IE session, which turns Outlook’s WorkOffline off.

      ————————
Maybe there’s another retry setting somewhere???

I’ve never done it myself, but I think you can set up an Exception Dictionary in Word, contain words that you want marked as incorrect even though they’re in the main dictionary. You could then define every letter of the alphabet (except I) as in invalid spelling.

Thanks, Andrew. I’ve always have my status bar turned off, to get more text on the screen at one time. Maybe I should rethink that.

Is there any way of controlling what’s displayed on the status bar? (I suspect not, as it doesn’t seem to be an object in Visual Basic.)

      Any ideas?
