Thanks, BATcher. I don’t need that, since I have no LAN.

    • in reply to: Computer will NOT wake up from sleep mode #1457953

Well, it did it again, today. I checked the BIOS, and the “remote wake up” setting was “enabled”. I disabled it. What, exactly, do they mean by “remote”? i.e. What have I disabled?

      Run the sleepmode troubleshooter command…

      Sleepmode troubleshooter:
      powercfg -ENERGY

Thanks, Cliint. I tried to run that on my admin account, but got a message to the effect of “you must run the ENERGY command on an account with administrator privleges…blah, blah… elevated command prompt”, which I had done, so I don’t know what to do to make that work. However, last night I ran CCleaner for the first time in months, and this morning my PC woke up on hitting enter. Maybe I cleaned something up to fix it.

Yes, it is great. I’m always impressed by the good, helpful suggestions on this board. I did re-upgrade to FF22, and it works just fine. I have no idea what “gfx.content.azure.enabled” means, or does, but setting it to false solved the problem. I’ll probably just use FF22 for the next hundred years, or so, and not worry about it any more…as long as it keeps working.

Thanks, ruirib! I searched that site for “fuzzy text” and it gave me a solution in the first thread. Set “gfx.content.azure.enabled” to false. I did that, and it seems to have fixed the problem. Maybe I’ll go back to FF22, now, and see if all is still okay.

Well, at least it’s nice to know it works for someone. 😉

The solution, in my case, was a free program called Sharpkeys 3.5. I don’t know if it would work for the Ctrl+Shift problem, though. It works great for disabling, or remapping, one key. I also tried another one called Mapkeyboard. It would not write to the registry – I think because I don’t have .NET 2. I do have .NET 4, which is required for Sharpkeys. Now, I can get back to my sloppy typing chores! 😉

NOTE TO MODERATOR: This thread probably should be moved to the General Windows forum.

Your story inspired me finally to solve my own little fat-finger mystery. The culprit turned out to be Ctrl+Shift. Hitting that key combination inadvertently has two effects: it changes the keyboard layout, and it turns the air blue. Anyway, I’m happy that you posted.

Turns the air blue, eh? LOL. Thanks for the reply, and glad I could help. My next step is to find out how to castrate that little context menu key, since a right-click does the same thing! 😉 I love solving these little mysteries.

    • in reply to: Text entry weirdness #1357249

OK, never mind. I find that I have a lazy right hand which accidentally hits the ‘context menu’ key (just left of the Ctrl key). Hitting that, and then typing a “p” is the short cut for “paste”. A relatively new keyboard, with no palm rest has contributed to this new problem. Well, at least now I know what’s going on, even if I can’t prevent it.

    • in reply to: Thunderbird small e-mail fonts #1348896

Why not set a minimum font size in Tools –> Options –> Display –> Formatting –> Advanced?

I always use this in Firefox and Thunderbird.

I had problems in FF with some sites, after setting a minimum font size a couple of years ago, so I don’t mess with that in FF or TB. Here’s a thread about it: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//126190-FF-vs.-IE-page-rendering

    • in reply to: Thunderbird small e-mail fonts #1347845

Mine is set for “original HTML”, so if you find other problems with “simple”, then my method would work for you, too.

    • in reply to: Thunderbird small e-mail fonts #1347768

Some email is too small a font for me, too. Usually, it is HTML, so I double-click it to open it in a new tab of TB, and then the entire page can be resized by some method or other…I use CNTL/mouse-wheel. Problem solved.

    • in reply to: MSE only manual updates #1344888

After fiddling with the settings, and attempting several “scheduled” scans, I finally got it to run ONE time. It ran immediately when I woke up the PC 31 minutes after the scheduled time. It doesn’t run while in sleep mode. It doesn’t seem to run at all if I leave the PC without putting it in sleep mode. Some scheduled tasks have a check box for “wake to run” – I wonder why MSE doesn’t have that. I’m finished messing with it.

    • in reply to: MSE only manual updates #1344799

Hmmmm. Well, like I said, I have tried that box both ways (many times, actually). Now that I’ve re-thought the problem, I will take the check out of the box to check for updates prior to running the scan; I already have a check for updates running several times per day via the scheduled tasks. I’ll post again, later with the results of that change. Thanks.

Edit: BTW, it is not just deferred, it never runs at all, whether it’s asleep, or I’m using it.

Edit…again: Well, I created that check-for-updates scheduled task several months ago, and checked it at the time, and it was fine, but now it hasn’t started successfully in at least a month, so I disabled it. Apparently, I have more than one problem. With that task disabled, and not checking for updates prior, I’ll see if the scan runs while I play golf today.

    • in reply to: MSE only manual updates #1344753

Strange, the problem with MSE is usually the opposite in that it is more difficult to get it to update when one wants it to…but that is easily remedied….

I’ve had that ‘easily remedied’ problem for a long time – I have it set to update/run a scan every Tuesday, and it just won’t do it. I have to run it manually, later, when I think of it. I’ve varied the time of day, so as to probably be on the PC doing something, or to have it in “sleep” mode, and checked/unchecked the box “Start the scheduled scan only when my PC is on but not in use”. Is it because I have checked the “Check for latest virus…..” box, and WU is set for “look only”? That never occured to me as a possible reason. Thanks for any help.
