I’m also doing an “Intro to Excel” workshop in a couple of weeks. Most of you have mentioned the basic things that should be covered. I’ve only got a couple to add for a “Basic.”

      1. Moving around the spreadsheet – End, Home, etc. Where the help files are to look up keyboard shortcuts.

      2. What the tabs at the bottom are. Make sure you name them so you know where things are.

      3. Other resources when Help doesn’t do it.

      4. I usually talk about the toolbars and what things are and how to find out if you forget.

For the Advanced class, I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned Pivot Tables and Goal Seek.

I checked on some of my charts and found the same thing. It also happens with grid lines and anything else that’s white.

You’ve probably already thought of this very obvious work around. Just use a very light color, like pale yellow or light gray. When printing in black and white, it’s white and dashed. On the screen it’s dashed also.

Sorry, I don’t have any more brilliant ideas.

This probably isn’t quite what you want, but if you use a pivot table, you can uncheck whatever cells you don’t want to report. It’s not automated, but you can also use the pivot table to make the chart.

Another advantage of the pivot table, you don’t have to calculate the percentages separately. You can report the data as sums, averages, percentages, whatever you want.
