I believe the optimum for laser mice would be the finest you can achieve. I have personally used a white paper printed with a uniform medium-to-light-grey shade printed at 300 dpi on a B&W laser printer. 600 dpi would also be OK, maybe even better, though I doubt many of us have fine-motor-muscle control in our hands that can fully utilize 600 dpi. I also get good results with the heavier paper used in many wall calendars; just cut off a piece with a large photo and tape it to your desktop. When it gets torn/dirty, replace it. The actual picture doesn’t seem to matter much.

Laser mice can use infra-red (invisible to the eye) or red light, but either can work just find on anything but a specular reflecting surface, such as clear glass or shiny metal. Frosted glass would be excellent, I imagine, as long as you use the frosted side, and not the other (shiny) side.

    • Latest news:
I don’t recommend this for everyone, but I located a Registry key that listed Chrome as the default mailto client

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellAssociationsUrlAssociationsmailtoUserChoice]”Progid”=”ChromeHTML”

      and deleted the “ChromeHTML”.
Now my system works fine, just like it used to. Eudora opens properly when I click on a Mailto: link in any browser.
(I did take the precaution of saving the appropriate Registry section before performing surgery, just in case it broke something.)

We’ll see how long the cure lasts….

    • Thanks for the tip, but that leads to the Control Panel>Default Programs > Set Associations > scroll down to Protocols > Mailto sequence.
On my computer, the default is Chrome, and the choices given for choosing a new default mail client are only Chrome and Outlook, and Eudora is not mentioned (nor are Hotmail/WinLive or Gmail). There is no provision for filling in your own personal choice. I don’t have the installation file for Eudora — its directories and executables were just copied into my new computer from the old computer years ago. So I suppose Win7 has no system “knowledge” of its existence. It ran fine that way for years. What to do?

    • in reply to: Printing to PDF in different page sizes #1318693

I use PDF995 (free from Software995) with Word 2003 and it works fine (use the Advanced button on the Printer Properties pane to select A4, after selecting the PDF printer in Word).
The 995 suite also includes free PDF editing software, if you want it.

    • in reply to: “Information” bug in Word 2003 thesaurus #1317757

I get the “in formation” version with Word 2003, on a machine that never has had Word 2010 installed. I suspect that maybe installing the 2010 version cleans up the Synonym/Thesaurus function in 2003 as well.

    • in reply to: Fill in a column based on contents of another column #1315457

Many thanks! It appears you have done what I need, and I can fix the anomalies here and there. And I will see if I can implement your suggestions on moving the lookup tables, though I am not used to working with multiple interacting sheets, nor dynamic ranges. We’ll see how it goes. If I don’t succeed, I’ll be back for more advice.

    • in reply to: Fill in a column based on contents of another column #1315385

Curious. When I click on it, it opens fine. (And I did check to see that I was clicking on the downloaded version in the Temp folder, not the file that I uploaded (Documents folder).)
Could I ask you to try downloading it again (after deleting the “bad” version, of course)?

    • in reply to: Fill in a column based on contents of another column #1315373

      From CephasOz:
As you’ve outlined it, there’s insufficient information to sort out the problem, because there’s no data in C5:C13, it’s unclear what you want to do with A21:A34 (in which there’s also no data), and it’s not obvious what the long forms of the values listed in column B are – how do you determine the long form of “zyg”, for instance?

One way to sort out how you specify the problem so that others can help, is to do a few entries by hand, and list the steps that you take, including where the data comes from, as you do so. You can then check the spreadsheet to ensure that all necessary data, including lookup tables, is listed, and also that all of the steps are there.

Sorry, apparently I uploaded an unfinished file. This one (Book3.xls) should be more coherent.
Let me try again to describe the task:
Entries F5:H30 are examples of the desired OUTPUT.
They are the result of the following operations, done by hand, but which I wish to automate:

Examine each entry in col. I and compare it to all terms in A5:A13. If a string from in A5:A13 appears in col. I, then enter the corresponding values from B5:B13 into column F and from C5:C13 (if any) into G.
For example, if “megalo” is found in I (e.g. I3 & I4), then F3 & F4 would receive the entry “Theropod” and G3 & G4 would receive “Megalosaur”.

Also examine each entry in col. I and compare it to all terms in A21:A34. If a string from A21:A34 is found in col. I, then enter the corresponding value from B21:B34 into column H.

The lists in A will be created by knowledgeable paleontologists, and may well grow larger (that is why I want to use such lists, rather than hard-coding the words into formulae–the address of a list can be changed more easily in a formula or VBA script). The specific meaning of “zyg” (zygapophysis) is immaterial for purposes of this example — delete it from the A list if you like. In fact, all of the lists in A, B, and C can be reduced to 3 or 4 members if it simplifies the work of creating an example.

      Hope this is clearer.

      CEILING function is simpler:
      =CEILING(A1,0.05)

    • It has to be your system that is faulting. I attempted the shift arrow keys selection combination without issue.
I normally use the mouse to highlight selections, not the keyboard.

Are we talking about a freeze up in Explorer.exe or a full blown blue screen crash?

Check your event viewer for more info regarding the crash:
      eventvwr.msc

Not BSOD; Explorer.exe crashes, giving this in eventvwr.msc (for the last crash):

I have no idea how to interpret these reports/logs to see what is happening.

    • No, I routinely move dozens of 1 GB AVI files around.
Use the copy and paste or drag and drop method instead of the keyboard one you mentioned.

The problem is not in my copying and/or pasting, it is in the selecting of what I intend to copy. I am able to select and copy (by dragging or by copy/paste) a few files at a time, no problem. It is when the total exceeds 1.2GB or so that the crash occurs. Doing the operation piecemeal, a few at a time, is tedious, but workable, and that is how I ended up doing the work. But I still want to know if my system is faulty, or is it Win7?

For example, have you ever moved a dozen files of 200MB each, all at one time, in one operation, by selecting them as a group and dragging them to a new folder? That is what I was doing, and which failed before I could drag them anywhere, or even do CTL-C or click File, Copy. I wasn’t even done selecting the group when it crashed.

    • in reply to: Can anyone identify this icon? #1301337

I should have said “Hold down the ALT key and repeatedly press TAB”…

    • in reply to: Can anyone identify this icon? #1301336

IF he will repeatedly press ALT-TAB, until the focus is on the mystery, then the name should appear in the box underneath.

    • in reply to: Strange files #1285061

They are not folders, but individual files, mostly less than 10KB. I have tried to open them with Notepad or Word but all I get is garbage. Renaming all of them would be a task and a half, there are 33 of them!!

I have been using a powerful and rather full-featured bulk rename utility called (surprise!)
      Bulk Rename Utility from http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php

      Makes renaming files easy.
