      I agree, Zig, Irfanview is versatile, fast, offers conversions to and from just about any image file format, and is FREE! Get all the plug-ins while you’re at it.

    • I agree w/ Calimanco — I started using LibreOffice when it first replaced OpenOffice several years ago, and eventually I just uninstalled my old MSOffice 2003, and never looked back. I have no trouble opening and editing old MS .doc/.xls/ files, etc., and can create both for others if necessary.

    • I wonder why Malwarebyte was not included (or even mentioned) in this rating? It is among the most popular AV products.

      It’s a very unpalatable icing that would withstand that much handling and binding with rubber bands.

      Have you done a thorough online search for a replacement antenna? I have seen them for sale for $5 or so…

      Thanks for the tips. I do use Malwarebytes Free, but was thinking this SlamDunk thing would sneak by because I had “authorized” it (albeit inadvertently). Should have tried it first….

    • in reply to: Need to reset default program for .bat files #1457479

      Remembering back to my DOS days, when I had a .bat file as desired I would use a small program called BAT2EXEC to convert/compile the .bat file as an .exe/executable file, difficult for others to change. Don’t know it that is still available but may be something on the ‘net

      Google “bat2exec” and you will get several sources…

      A prime example of why there is an upper limit on gaming tables in a casino, to prevent progressive betting. While you are speaking of wealth, what is the most expensive and precious thing ever?

      Wholly depends on definition of “thing,” and “expensive” and “precious.”
      Is a city or state or country a thing? Is a river a thing? Is the Earth a thing?
      Is “expensive” only the price asked for something? Or is it the amount actually paid? (One can ask far more than anyone will pay, but does that actually affect the value?) What is “precious”? Is a human life more precious than anything else? Everyday experience would tell us “NO”.

      A valid answer would have to take all this, and more, into account….

      And by the way, I don’t think the table limits in Vegas are for the protection of the house, they are for the protection of the players. Any real high roller who wants higher limits needs only to whisper it to the pit boss and he/she will be shown to a private room.

    • in reply to: Word 2003 defaults #1457477

      Anyone know of a way to permanently change the default settings in Word 2003, so I can customize it to my needs? Thanks!

      Find your Normal.dot template and copy it to Normal-orig.dot. (I use the Everywhere search engine — from http://www.voidtools.com — to find files quickly and easily).

      In Word, open the default template (NORMAL.dot), set up your desired formats and settings, and save the doc to a new template (YOURNAME.dot).

      Now, when you want to use your template, do File/Open and pick your version. Don’t forget to save your work under a new filename (and use .doc, not .dot) to avoid overwriting your custom .dot file.

      This may cover the defaults you are interested in changing.

      TreeSize free is my favourite space checker.

      The contents of that folder are controlled by Internet Explorer. You need to empty the IE cache, or close IE and clean out the directory manually.

      cheers, Paul

      Add me to the list of happy users of TreeSize Free. It lets you add its start command to the right-click menu in folders, for easy and quick access.

      Continuing:
      @Sudo15:
      The website involved in running your suggestion seems to be out of order, so the test program wouldn’t complete its installation.
      I did run the Win7 control panel diagnostic program to check on memory performance, and it was all OK (as was the rest of the system).

    • in reply to: USB HDD sometimes very slow, sometimes not #1457258

      @RetiredGeek:
      Both are directly connected to USB ports on the main computer: one to a front port and one to a rear port. The Hitachi L: drive has its own power cord/wall wart, and the other U: drive (WD Passport) uses a short cable with proprietary mini-USB+power connector on the drive end (but experimentation shows a standard mini-USB cable will work, too).

      @Sudo15:
      I appreciate the suggestion and will download/run the test and post results here.

    • in reply to: PDF files with .PL extension #1457235

      You might try copying the .pl file to a new name: xxx.pdf, then see if your PDF viewer will open and read xxx.pdf. If it doesn’t work, you lose nothing but a little time.

    • in reply to: Recommend PDF reader? #1457233

      I use Nitro PDF, which loads a bit slower, but allows editing, not just reading.

    • in reply to: Explanation for weird behavior of F4 key? #1456415

      Win7 Home Prem + Word2003 here:
      F4 key repeats everything I type since the last F4 press (or since the last of any of these: Delete, Insert).

      It doesn’t repeat multiple Deletes, just the last one.
      It does repeat multiple Backspaces, with or without a string of letters.
      It ignores most other keys, such as Esc, Shift, Ctrl, Alt, CapsLock.

      Oddly, in the course of testing these, I discovered that my Word2003 no longer recognizes Shift-Tab; it moves to the right just like Tab, instead of backing up to the left as (I think) it used to do.
