    • When my system lost sound through the speakers recently, I spent a long time checking the wires/plugs/sound settings in Control Panel, etc., to no avail. Then I did a simple Restart, and lo, the sound was restored, even louder and clearer than I was accustomed to. I had done many Restarts over the past few months, but not since the sound disappeared completely.

    • Many thanks for the prompt response. -Collier

    • Actually, it’s everything that uses icons. Among my peeves about icons is that they’re ordered horizontally, not vertically, and even if you make them very small, you still can’t get the same number on your screen that the old “list” view shows.

And another, really minor quibble: when you prefer a blank screen rather than a background picture, your choice of colors is now prechosen, and I find all of them too dark for me. I need more contrast, but don’t want black on white. What happened to “mixing” your own custom color?

One way to get a plain background of any color: use Paint to create a full-screen image of your desired color and save it as a .bmp image. Then in Windows, select that image as your background image, instead of a photo.

I use a Logitech Z130 pair of amplified speakers — tiny 5-ohm speakers, with VOL control and earphone jack on front of one unit, and a wall-wart for power. This setup plugs into the audio-out jack (green?) on my desktop computer. Plenty loud.

    • in reply to: Difference in USB ports on front or back of computer? #1540616

      …snip…

But, there are only 3 USB 3.0 Ports on the back of the Tower and I use all three (2 Monitors and the UPS).
I had to disconnect my UPS to be able to use that USB 3.0 Port.

I suspect the UPS can get along nicely on a USB 2 port, and does not need USB 3, so why not keep your HDD on the USB 3 where you found it works, and plug the UPS into any open USB 2 port?

Microsoft’s advice for dealing with spam and other types of email abuse…
      http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/outlook/abuse-phishing-junk-email

is more for phishing emails than for nuisance spam.

That page gives advice about how to deal with spam that actually holds threats, but not how to deal with nuisances. They only advise to move nuisances to the Junk folder. They do not indicate whether future email from the same sources will then be automatically moved to the Junk folder.

I created a Hotmail account using Windows Live Mail 2012 back in April as my Microsoft account when I signed up for my Windows 10 Insider Program. All I’ve used it for is to keep up with Gabe Paul’s messages and follow up on some of the informative links he includes: nothing else.
      — However since day 1 I’ve been receiving spam emails on a daily basis.
      — I haven’t kept an exact record but I’d say about 7 a day.

I also have 2 yahoo email accounts and a Verizon email account and I’ve had those for years
      — On these accounts I hardly receive any spam messages, I’d say about 5 a year in each one.

It astounds me how 1 of 4 accounts is so spammable
      — Is there anything I can do about the Hotmail account?

In case it’s helpful for you to know, my computer OS is Win7 Pro and I use IE11

    • Thanks to all very much. I will work my way thru these suggestions and post results when I find one that works. I am encouraged….

It has been a while since I used it, but WebReaper was a good solution when I needed it.

This CTRL/Enter trick only works in the address bar of the browser, not in any other place where you can enter text, such as a document.

LibreOffice is free (open source), and does not put watermarks on your printed pages and PDFs (WPS does use watermarks in the free version).
Libre is big, a little slow to load, but if you need its power and features, it’s solid.

AOMEI Backupper (http://www.backup-utility.com) has been working nicely for me (Win7 SP1 desktop) where Macrium Reflect Free was unreliable.

Since you know the filename, an excellent FAST & FREE file searcher program is Search Everything from http://www.voidtools.com. It seems to locate stuff for me that the WinExpl search function misses. Does not search contents of files, just paths & filenames (or any portion thereof).
