From your same posts Win-X also does the same; Win x>Shut Down or Sign out>Sign Out. I’m a goob–should have been here poking around when I installed Win8:rolleyes:
I kind of wanted the experience to be—sorta on my own—like your first date 🙂

I read some of the posts (not all) and had already upgraded my laptop to Win 8 ($15.00 plus free extras) and because my pc was not touch, actually enjoyed the way it worked. Downloaded an app with keyboard cheats, and most (if not all) my old keyboard cheats worked like a charm. I do plan to buy a touch enabled ultra book, or a Surface with Win8 Pro when they offer it. All in all a good experience; we’ll see if this feeling continues. I did upgrade and not perform full install, because I really did not want to install Office and all my favorite apps again; upgrade assistant carefully walked me through what I could keep, and what wouldn’t work. I did lose 2 programs I wanted: MacAfee (free from ATT) and virtual Box.

    • in reply to: Why No Warnings About Installing IE8? #1257352

After reading your post, I tried to go to the web via Windows media player, using Media Guide – the page that shows up to look for redio stations, look for albums to buy, etc. If I typed IE8 in the search bar, I was brought to M$ site that you could look for help, etc. -even download programs and apps.
I’ve personally never used IE8 with XP SP3, but have used IE7 with no problems for quite some time, in fact I didn’t konw until recently you could use IE8 with XP.

The lesson here may be to always have another browser installed when you start fooling with the other, so you have a way to get help online.

    • in reply to: JS loops don't run; account permission problem? #1257342

I had been having this same problem, only with videos viewed in a web browser. The problem is permissions; IE8 under limted user accounts won’t show or play at all, even if enabled in Add-ons.
The only fix that works for me is to create a shortcut on my desktop for IE8, then:
1.) Right-click on the icon, then click the advanced button at bottom right.
2.) Check the “Run as administrator” box, click OK, then click OK.
Then, when I used this “special” IE shortcut everything worked great, videos played, Flash enabled worked-
If I wanted the “limited use” IE8 I would click my faithful IE icon in the taskbar-or I wanted someone using my pc to keep me safe.

A second option is to right-click on an IE8 icon and click “run as administator”
The down side to both options is you have to type in your administator password every time.

This was a great work-around, but the browser now opened has none of the Favorites from the limited user account, so I had to copy the Favorites folder from the limted user acount to the adminstrator account to see all my saved sites, the favorites bar etc.

a.) Is there a way to have one favorites folder, shared by both accounts?
b.) Is there another way to automated the admin password entry (for this icon), so I don’t have type it every time (minus disabling UAC)?

    • in reply to: Easiest way to send a link? #1257243

I too liked to send links by e-mail, but mostly the link doesn’t get past some mail programs, so over the years I found it easier to just click in the address bar, copy the address and copy it into my e-mail. While this is not as functional as right click or file click or page click, the URL always gets through to the interested party.

    • in reply to: DVD Shrink #1210549

I too, was using DVD shrink to back up DVD’s; alas it won’t work in Win 7 for me either.

I did a search for DVD Shrink on Download.com, and most of the alternatives were useful, but not free.

One alternative was DVD Shrink 2009: DVD Srink 2009 on Download.com

I have not tried it, nor can I speak on if it works well or not.

      Good Luck!

To quote from the HP Forum (the link here: h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Operating-systems-and-software/Adobe-Flash-Player/m-p/225713#M17610
“Web sites and software are still catching up to 64bit, so until there is better compatibility out there, use the non-64bit version of Internet Explorer for sites that require Flash.

Click Start > All Programs > towards the top of the list will be two versions of IE. Select the one that doesn’t have 64bit next to it.”

    • in reply to: Running As Administrator #1210531

I too, recently read enough about using Admin priveledges all the time, and created an account to use day-to-day. As John first posted above, I had been on this pc for a few months and was “comfy” with how it was set up, and feared it would be a pain in the toucas to start over; well it was, and wasn’t. The hardest things were using Outlook on the new account (had to start over), then point to the old PST files.
Other parts of it went seamlessly, and I’ve finally gotten used to providing the Admin password when doing things like installing, deleting, gettting files off the Admin’s My Documents.

There seemed to be no easy way to get all the things migrated over, other than deal with them as I went along.

    • in reply to: Old printer will not work with W7 64 bit #1196507

Paul, go to your printer’s website and check (in the slight chance) that drivers are available for Windows 7—-even Windows Vista (these might work).
My father-in-law had the same problem—2 printers; a Multi-function and an old Compaq (Lexmark) IJ600. The drivers for Vista nor Win 7 were not available.
In the absence of that, consider a newer, albeit cheaper printer that supports Win 7. You can print on your old PC, while you decide/investigate. Good luck!
