AskWoody LoungerI don’t know about painless. That depends on how many images and if you need to do anything else with them. If it’s only a few and you’re just changing the file format, you could use the copy of Paint that comes with newer Windows versions (2K and XP, probably 98, ME) and can Save As… JPEG. Since you’re going from GIF to JPEG, the quality shouldn’t degrade too much.
For anything more than that, you might try geting a trial version from Ulead (PhotoImpact or PhotoExpress) or JASC (PaintShop Pro) that will handle the conversion, among other things. The nice thing about the trials is that you can also get a sense what’s available. PaintShop Pro has a batch conversion utility that’s very handy for jobs like this.

AskWoody LoungerI’ve been using Opera as a test browser for a while now. They’ve had MDI browsing for a while (Multiple browser windows in one), and added tabbed windows in 6.0. Opera’s also the quickest of the browsers as far as I can tell, is mostly standards compliant, and does a decent job of page rendering even with CSS.
http://www.opera.com[/url%5D – current version is 6.05. The “ad supported” free version is very unobtrusive, worth checking out.

AskWoody LoungerYes, it’s set to 20 days (the default). Just for grins, I’ll try changing it and clearing the History to see if that kicks it back to life. Hmm. Nothing, although if I change the view to By Most Visited, a few sites show up, but not all (and not the most visited either).
Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerHas anyone tried the Remote Desktop feature built into XP? Similar to Terminal Services, but now it’s available on Pro platform. And the Remote Desktop Client is a lot nicer than the older Terminal Services Client. XP’s client can run on any Windows 32-bit OS (and the best part is you can also use it to connect to W2K Servers running Terminal Services).

AskWoody LoungerI may have misunderstood – each set of attachments (one email at a time) – yes, use Save Attachments from the File menu. All the attachments (multiple messages selected) – no, Save Attachments is disabled. Sorry for any confusion I caused.
-
WScmunro
AskWoody LoungerSave Attachments is still there, even with multiple attachments on one email. But if you’re trying to save the attachments on more than one email at a time, then it’s disabled:

AskWoody LoungerIs there a VirusScanner on the web server? We’ve seen the heuristic scanning in McAfee’s NetShield kill the ASP scripts. NAV is also known to cause problems when running on a web server with ASP.

AskWoody LoungerI use a utility called TrayIt! to stuff programs into the systray, but even though the utility works well, for some programs it’s better than others. Have you tried the XP feature that allows grouping icons when the task bar gets full? It takes some getting used to, but reduces clutter a lot.
Plus, XP has the feature for hiding systray icons that are not active, so you’d have to watch for interactions between that and any systray utility you’re running.

AskWoody LoungerNot that I’ve ever seen. Save Attachments is only available from the File Menu when a single message is selected. As soon as I select another message, Save Attachments is disabled. There was some discussion about third-party utilities that will save attachments and/or messages, but of course I can’t remember now where or when that was.
One suggestion from an earlier thread is here: http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthread…=&vc=1#Post9835%5B/url%5D.
You might also try http://www.slipstick.com[/url%5D which as good Outlook resources.

AskWoody LoungerDo you have any custom components in your web? We’ve seen IIS hang mostly on external components called from ASP.
Have permissions changed? Is the account that the web runs under the same in both environments? -
WScmunro
AskWoody LoungerI haven’t tried it, but since it is no longer a Control Panel applet it may work. I’m not that brave.

AskWoody LoungerI also just notice a posting in XP that mentioned TweakUI for XP allows you to edit the URL Search as well. Checked it out, and sure enough, it’s right there, and even handles the longer URLs! (TweakUI is part of the Power Toys for Windows.)

AskWoody LoungerIs Email all you’re looking for? Exchange used with Outlook provides quite a bit more than just email, which is also why it’s not going to be the most economical. On the other hand, it can also be used for public/shared folders (including Contacts and Discussions), calendar/scheduling, task management (not to be confused with project management), integration with Fax and VoiceMail, etc.
If you’re looking for a system to handle all or some of these, consider Exchange as opposed to separate systems. If you really only need email, the other responses give you more cost-effective solutions.

AskWoody LoungerWhen did you stop receiving them from Motley Fool? I have a rule to send Motley Fool emails to a specific folder. I just checked that folder for the first time in a while, the most recent newsletter was back on 8/21. Could be they changed another policy. They’ve been moving to more subscription based services in the last few months.

AskWoody LoungerIf the URL you want to use is not pasting into QuickSearch (usually there’s a flash, but no text in the URL box) then the URL is probably too long for the form control. Don’t worry. First, make sure you’ve changed the search text in your URL to the placeholder “%s” (without the quotes). Then, if that doesn’t work, type in a short URL – doesn’t have to be the real one – and save.
Quick Search stores it’s shortcut entries in the Registry, under the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchUrl
You’ll see keys for each shortcut. If you’re comfortable editing your registry (and follow the warnings about backing up and such), then:
1. Run regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerSearchUrl.
2. Find the key for your new shortcut and select it to see the associated values (in the right-hand pane).
3. Double-click on the Default value, and then enter the entire URL (with the %s placeholder) and click OK.
4. Test your shortcut in IE.I haven’t found a URL that’s too long using this method. And some good searches have simple URLs where paste works, like my Google Bar replacement:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%s
