      Got RealJukeBox or RealPlayer? Take a look at this thread in a newsgroup:

      Out of curiosity, if you right-click on the name and select Properties, what do you get? I would expect a dialog showing the Display and the actual address. Or is this the information that’s not showing?

      Thanks.

      Two things come to mind:

      IE uses anonymous access by default. If you need to logon to a specific FTP account, include it in the URL: ftp://myuserID@ftp.domain.com.

      If you’re behind a firewall (which seems more likely to be the issue), try enabling Passive FTP in the Internet Options (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab).

      No sign of it at Slipstick’s Sync page either. In case you can’t find it, there’s a list of tips and tools for syncing PST between machines here.

    • in reply to: shorcut to variable location? (5.5, 6.0) #619743

      Then I think JScher’s suggestion is best, or if you have IIS/ASP, make use ASP to generate the links so that you can set the server name in one place to update all the links. Or I suppose you could do the same with JavaScript on an HTML page.

      What about using the QuickSearch IE power toy? I tried this out, since I often look at different servers with different versions of our product. QuickSearch doesn’t care where the placeholder for the variable is (%s in the URL). So you can create a shortcut with the server name as the variable:

      shortcut = ccmadmin
      url = http://%s:100/CCMAdminDev/main.asp

      Now when I enter “ccmadmin hostname” in the address bar, it takes me to the /CCMAdminDev/main.asp page on the server I entered.

      Hey, thanks! I like this. I can get rid of about 15 confusing shortcuts now.

      Following up on what JScher posted, I tried several tests with different accounts, ISPs, OL2K, OE6, web mail, etc. Every single message came back with a different version of the To: field! So even sending from the same client (OE6) using the same ISP, the To: field was slightly different. But the message headers were fairly consistent depending on which mail client I used, and OL2K did exactly the same thing that you saw. And I’m fairly certain we have different ISPs. If you have that account set up in OE6 (assuming you installed it), you could test from there and see if the result is any different.

      I suspect that different mail clients create the message headers differently according to how they implement SMTP, and possibly with some variation depending on the mail server they connect to.

      I has to make you wonder about who is testing the SP if something as basic as switching identities is broken. Thanks for the pointer to the work-around.

    • in reply to: Should you install XP SP1? (XP SP1) #617812

      My main reason for downloading the full version is that I have other machines that I’ll migrate to XP over time, and there are others at my company that use XP despite the fact that our corporate IT doesn’t officially support it. Plus I can put it on a CD and help out my friends that don’t have a T1.

      As for the difference between the full and Express, as I said I didn’t anticipate any, but I have to wonder if the logic that checks for components to install is indentical in both. In a perfect world it would be, but this is MS we’re talking about. I thought it might be useful if people who have problems include the version of SP1 that was used.

      I installed IE6 SP1 prior to XP SP1, so I can’t tell if it’s included or not. I’ll check that the next time I apply the SP.

    • in reply to: GIF to JPEG #617617

      JPEG uses “lossy” compression, which means you give up quality to reduce file size. The level of compression is adjustable, so you might try raising the quality setting and check to make sure the file size is still acceptable. In PaintShop Pro, I think the setting is in the Options for the Save As…, and probably there for the Batch Conversion too.

    • in reply to: xpsp1 breaks outlook express (winXP professional) #617613

      Same here! Don’t know if this happened with IE6 SP1 alone or when XP SP1 was installed. I suspect the former.

      One thing I noticed is that it seems to be a problem with the setting for which identity to load at startup. If I check that option, the selected identity is always loaded, even when I try to switch to another. If I uncheck the option, when I switch I get the dialog box asking which identity to use, even though I already specified that when I switched.

      I’ve seen this problem but have never had time to really look into it. A quick search on Google Groups turned up a few hits. Hopefully one of these will steer you in the right direction:

    • in reply to: No History in History (IE6, IE6 SP1) #616343

      Well, I’m not alone – a search on Google Groups found several others with exactly this problem. And you’re on track because the solution has generally been to either change the registry setting for the History folder to a new location, or to delete History from a DOS prompt and reboot. The folder is rebuilt from scratch when it’s not there.

      From DOS, I can see the History.IE5 folder under History, and there’s a few folders in there similar to what’s on my other machines (folder names like MSHist012002080220020803). And the index.dat file is there.

      So my next question is: assuming my History folder is corrupt, what’s the safest way to get rid of it and start over?

      Thanks! And congratulations on your promotion from 4-star to 5-star lounger!

    • in reply to: No History in History (IE6, IE6 SP1) #616290

      The History folder is empty, which is strange because I do see history when I view by most visited sites. I found a Registry setting that looks like a possible culprit: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainSave_Session_History_On_Exit, but I have no idea what this one is related to. I couldn’t find anything about in MSKB.

    • in reply to: Home PNA Network ICS Problem #616168

      I have a similar setup with work and home, and took the easy way out: I named the home workgroup the same as the LAN Domain at the office. My Win2K laptop was able to see and access my other machines at home, and at work it accessed the domain. (I did the same thing with my wireless network). One thing that’s a little harder is accessing Win2K machines from Win98, but there are already threads about that available here if you search.
