AskWoody LoungerThe shuttle is an interseting idea, but because the monitor and keyboard are separate, I think my wife would prefer a laptop. Doesn’t have to be the lightest, thinest one, but still needs to be easily portable. Size and weight are secondary, but they’re still an important factor. Thanks for the suggestion.

AskWoody LoungerThat sounds like a bad combination of something (software/hardware). Is the hardware up to date? I know NT used to have the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) to go by; not sure if XP has an HCL.
Antivirus software is the first thing I’d check. We’ve seen problems with NAV and MacAffee, especially if the version running on the web server is not the Server version of the antivirus product (although I’ve been okay with XP Pro running plain old VirusScan). Otherwise, a reinstall might be the way to go.

AskWoody LoungerThe “compelling” part of this is that we’re wireless at home, and there’s a few business trips each year where my wife really needs to bring her work along. She’s been getting by with a Compaq Armada from the last century when she travels, but that’s starting to fade.
As for Dell’s pricing, they should be fined for deceptive trade. There’s a different offer every time I go to the site, and the price they show on the “featured” items jumps $150 as soon as you click Customize starting at… link! Just try to get the same price on the same system two days in a row – I dare you.
Ah, well. I guess I’ll just have to deal (no pun intended). Thanks for the feedback!

AskWoody LoungerMark,
Thanks for the excellent feedback. That’s pretty much the story I’ve heard about Dell – great product and good support (if you can reach them).
The 3-year on-site service is only $60 more than mail-in service. And for the next five minutes there’s a rebate on this option. (I’ve already read jscher’s reply, and I agree completely!) But I’ll make a point to ask about whether on-site techs can make the majority of repairs, and what happens if they do need to mail it in. Thanks for pointing that out.

But I would also like the possibility of inserting my personal black hole list and hope that this is included in the “That’s in addition to filters you can create on any part of a message…”
[/indent]
Yes – you can create your own filters for Senders and specify domains in any of the header fields, including important fields like message-ID. It doesn’t look like there’s a simple way to grab the IP address out of the Received fields, so I’ll ask Mike about that. The beta is coming to a close and I expect Mike to announce availability soon. Some people might have shipped by now, but he’s making sure he’s addressed every issue that’s come up.

AskWoody LoungerMike Craven (The Office Maven) does! Or at least he was dissatisfied enough with Outlook’s filtering that he took matters into his own hands:
Mike is one of the developer’s behind WOPR and he’s been very busy trying to wrap up WOPR Junk Mail Remover – a spam utility to integrate with Outlook. Instead of depending on an extensive “black hole” list like most other spam utilities, WJMR uses logic that filters emails by content, maintaining a list of good and bad words, and learning as you go. The more you use it the better it gets. That’s in addition to filters you can create on any part of a message. It should be out of Beta soon.
Outlook XP at least let’s you combine your list into a single rule with multiple words/phrases, but it’s still a lot of work to keep up as spammers change addresses. If you can’t wait for WJMR, there are other commercial Spam filters out there, but as I said most rely on black hole lists (lists of known spammer addresses/domains). Some of the newer ones are even using a form of challenge/response to see if there’s a live person checking the reply-to address before allowing suspected junk-mail into your inbox.

AskWoody LoungerWhere’s your VBScript running? Inside IE, WSH, an application?
Are you opening a new window for the new URL or replacing the contents of the current window?
You’re wanting to return the new URL from IE to a variable in the script that opened the original window, right?

AskWoody LoungerI have the same setup and a test case showed the same problem. I had to do two things to get the test project working:
1) (As MarkJ said:) If you get 403.1 errors viewing a web folder or page on your machine, make sure the anonymous access account has permissions to access the folders and files in NTFS (not just IIS). By default, XP’s IUSR account does not have access to folders outside the web root’s path. So you’ll need to add IUSER_PC2 (or the PC2Users group) if you’re using a Virtual Directory based on, for example, C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsProjectsGolf-In-The-Kingdom to preview the web.
2) Don’t use a “.” (period or stop character) in the folder names. I think that once you get beyond the first single slash in the URL the stop character marks the end of path/file-name and start of file-extension. So http://pc2/golf-in-the-kingdom.com looks like a file named golf-in-the-kingdom, of type “com” in the web’s root folder. Ecaping the stop (.) doesn’t seem to help. No errors, just doesn’t work.
Netscape seems more sensitive to this issue too. I think IE sometimes resolved the ACL problem in the background using Challenge/Response (now called Integrated Windows Authentication). But Netscape reliably fails.
Now then, I notice you don’t have a Golf-in-Scotland.com site. Did someone else get it, or would that simply be redundant? And you have read Golf in the Kingdom, haven’t you?

AskWoody LoungerHmm. I run IIS with XP Pro and don’t have any problems. IIS does hang occaisionally, but I think that’s actually one of our components behaving badly. Which makes me wonder – do you have a plain vanilla IIS install, or have you added other components to the web server? Any ISAPI filters, alternate servers, FrontPage Extensions, webs with ActiveX or Java components that run on Application or Session start? Any of those could cause IIS to hang.
You might also try this:
Open the properties for a folder. If it stalls, open a command line (cmd) and type iisreset. See if the properties come up when the server restarts.

AskWoody LoungerThere was a discussion on this very topic in WOW some time back. The general idea is that you open two Outlook windows for Contacts at the same time and place them side by side. In one window, use a view that makes it easy to find the individual contacts. In the other window view by Category. Now you can drag and drop one or more contacts from the individual view into the appropriate categories.
Search the WOW archives and you’ll find the full discussion and details.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 22, 2003 at 10:08 pm in reply to: Keyboard Shortcut for next Unread Message (Outlook 2002/SP-2) #647107Thanks, but that’s exactly the view I’m trying to avoid – I need to see the unread and read messages at the same time so I can see changes. These are not replies, but new messages on the same topic that I’m comparing.

AskWoody LoungerI’m not seeing the problem with OL2K-SR1 on Win2K Professional with SETI. What type of PC (processor, memory, etc.) is giving you the problem?
What version of Seti@home?

AskWoody LoungerHow long has it been since the move? It takes a couple days for the change to fully take effect (update all the DNS tables).

AskWoody LoungerIf you use Corporate Workgroup (CW) mode you can set up profiles (which are Outlooks version of Identities). I found that if you have multiple users on the machine, each user has a unique set of profiles. That is, a profile only appears for the logon (machine user) that created it. So you can have one logon with multiple profiles, a bunch of logons each with their own profile, and so on. Like OE, address books, message stores, calendar, etc., are separate for each profile.
Most people with POP3 email use Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode. However, CW mode is fine for POP3 because it doesn’t require an Exchange Server. In CW mode you can add an Internet E-Mail account under Services to connect to a POP3 or IMAP server. We’ve got a machine running this way at home for my wife’s business so we can continue using the old MS Fax program that was almost integrated with Outlook.

AskWoody LoungerAh that good old Knowledge Base search engine. Not quite useless. But you’re right – it often misses articles that seem to be clear matches for a search. Google has a better search engine, and you can restrict any google search to the MS Support site by adding the following to your search:
site:support.microsoft.com
(Note, no space between site: and the URL.) So to find articles about AppleTalk and Windows XP at MS support site, you can search on Google with:
AppleTalk Windows XP site:support.microsoft.com
and you’ll see the article in question listed. This won’t get the very latest KB articles, but it’s often more productive than using the MS KB search.
And while you’re at google, try the search (minus the site:xxx restriction) from the groups page. You’ll get newsgroup articles telling you how others in the same situation are coping.
