You are right. My user name is different. I cannot imagine I ever would have thought of that. thanks again.

You may have something there. I will have to check that out. Thanks.

I just did a normal copy – paste. I kept backups of the file in several places and have tried copying from each to no avail. And like I said, the back-end opens no problem. I even tried opening the back-end and then the front-end. It’s a puzzler! Thanks for giving it a thought.

Works perfectly! Thank you very much.

Actually your formula works in Excel 97 but it does not grab the first 4 entries.

I failed to mention I only have Office 97. I’m old!

    • in reply to: System repair only gives DVD option #1551158

I did replace the DVD, but I see that I failed to communicate my question properly. I wanted to know if there was a way to create a recovery disc on a flash drive when a DVD was not available. I know the procedure for creating a DVD recovery disc, but my screen only gives a DVD as a media option, and at the time I did not have a DVD available. My post is useless, but I am glad you guys have a sense of humor. I will try to give my questions more thought in the future before I post them. Thanks

    • in reply to: Can’t connect to the internet #1550204

Well believe it or not the problem was a corrupt installation. We installed Chrome and went right to the internet. Internet Explorer said “Page could not be found” so Internet Explorer was the problem, and since it is tied to the Windows shell, we obviously got some corruption in the installation.

All of your remarks were appreciated and we will use the links for final updated drivers. I just didn’t suspect the browser was the problem. I assume SP3 will fix it.

      Thanks again for your responses.

PS the old woody’s lounge use to kick out an email when a response was posted. I haven’t received any emails so I’m glad I checked the site to leave this update.

Thank you Patt. The OnCurrent is a form event. So I take it no event is taking place in the LastName control.

    • in reply to: Hassle-free editing of PDFs possible? #1456383

Office 2013 (which I otherwise love) has failed many times to convert PDF files for me. The message given for the failure was usually related to graphics. Smaller files with little or no graphics have converted easily, and if they convert they are editable.

    • Thank You Wendell. The articles you referred me to will be very helpful in the future. But if I may, let me try one more time to explain what I am looking for. The form I am referring to is based on a query that joins the table for applicant information, name, address, zipcode, etc. to the ZipCodes table. On my form the tab order for fields places the zip code field before the city and county fields as these are filled in automatically after the zipcode is enterd. However, the form continues on to a subform for communications information which means after the zip code is entered I continue to tab through the city and county fields to the subform. Once the subform has the focus Access will attempt to save the record at which time it gives a message if the zip code entered is not in the zipcodes table. The error code is 3101, but rather than capturing that and replacing the Access message with my own, I thought I could use the after update event of the zip code field to check if the data entered matches a record in the zipcodes table. I have been away from Access for over 6 years and never knew a lot to start with, but I remember we would open a recordset, in this case the zipcodes table and check if the data entered matched a record in the table. I just can’t remember how we did that.

    • in reply to: security of database #1441907

You can compile your database into an mde file which will make it a runtime file only. In a mde database the user has no access to design view for any of the database objects. Any changes have to be made in the original mdb file and then converted again. However, though tables cannot be exported from a mde file you can still link to the tables from another database and you may be able to import them too.

OK, now that I have humiliated myself I discovered I had the page header instead of the form header active.

Sorry, I missed the font color difference. Turning off the fast boot did the trick. I knew it was something simple, I just couldn’t remember. I appreciate your help.
