    • in reply to: Transplanting Excel and Word settings to new machine #1391695

I have just successfully transferred Office 2007 settings from one Win7 32 bit computer to a new Win7 64 bit computer with no problems using Windows Easy Transfer. Looking at the FAQ, it does seem that this should work with Office 2003, and I think it can be used to transfer from Vista or even XP.

      Worth a try…

…Disable the active service from task manager, then locate the uninstaller from within the program’s root directory.

      Thanks, Clint.

Interesting. Neither in the computer with the problem, nor in my notebook that does not have a problem, can I find any file that looks like an uninstaller. I’m looking in C:Program FilesMicrosoft Security Client – is that the program’s root directory you mean?

However, that’s probably moot, since I think the process that I have been put through by MS Service does all you suggest and more, but without success.

Given that MS seem to be aware of the problem as indicated by the error codes, and that there seem to be a not insignificant number of people reporting similar problems on a variety of help sites, I suspect I’m not quite the ‘odd man out’ – there seem to be several others at least as ‘odd’ as me 🙂

    • I use an Android program SMS Backup & Restore, whch backs up SMSs only to an XML file. This can then be backed up to your computer.

Might be at least a partial solution…

      JimRob,

Assuming this was directed at me…

Thanks for the suggestion. Can I do this if Windows 7 is 64 bit Home Premium and XP is 32 bit Professional?

I’m using VMware Player with Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium. As far as I know, there should be no problem with 64 bit. I am using XP Home 32 bit, but again there should not be a problem with Professional.

If so, can you direct me to “how-to” instructions?

I have found the free VMwarePlayer the best approach. You can download this from Download VMware Player. I think you’ll be required to register in order to download. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can also download from FileHippoVMware Player 5.0.1.

I found the user manual quite clear. Download this from VMware Player Documentation

There’s also a good user forum at VMware Player Community, but I think you’ll need to have registered with VMware first if you wish to post.

What normally gives the greatest problem is installing the appropriate VMware tools for the guest. But with XP that should not be too much of a challenge. It gets more difficult with Linux guests.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have further questions…

    • in reply to: Dual Boot XP and 7 #1366148

I’d really recommend considering running XP as a virtual machine under Windows 7. This was the way I went after trying dual boot. Among others, this avoids all the hassle of rebooting, gives almost immediate access to the XP applications, and allows drag-n-drop between the two OSs. Installing e.g. VMware Player is easy and it is free.

KeePass is free for Windows and Android. I use Dropbox to synchronize both.

    • I suspect that you would have no problem installing – indeed I suspect that all CDs are the same, regardless of source. And anyway, you could download the latest version from Windows 7 Direct Download Links The problem would probably arise when you tried to activate. The version I have states “Activation must occur in certain countries/regions within Southeast Asia excluding Singapore”. I guess that the product key identifies the restrictions. My guess (sorry, no experience) is that if you try to activate from a non-US IP, on-line activation will probably fail. You’ll then need to activate by phone, which might involve some searching questions…

    • in reply to: Checking SMART drive for possible failure #1356348

If your BIOS includes SMART monitoring (almost certainly it does), it will show an error during the boot up process (power on self test/POST). You may need to disable Full Screen Logo or equivalent to see the POST results. If Wait for ‘F1’ If Error is Enabled (default), the boot up process should halt and show an error message if a SMART problem is found.

You will then need one of the disk checking utilities to identify the actual problem. I have happily used the free PassMark DiskCheckup for some time.

As a matter of interest, is there any difference between using chkdsk in this way, and selecting Error-checking in the Tools tab for each drive?

      BATcher,

I’ve not tried the WINE approach – perhaps a project for ‘Ron’ (lateR-ON). I have found installing the Linux system in a virtual machine (I prefer the free VMware Player) the most convenient solution. Installing the Linux Tools is a bit of a pain, but apart from that, it’s easier to install new versions.

    • Bob,

Take a look at Slipstream Service Pack 3 into Your Windows XP Installation CD. I’ve found this relatively easy to do. Despite the title, it also covers including updates.

    • in reply to: G-mail offers two tier verification. #1347062

Thanks for that clear explanation. I’ve been mulling this for some time.

I have a few further questions if you’re willing to share your expertise:

      1. I usually access my Gmail through a POP3 account using Thunderbird. Thunderbird remembers my Gmail log-in password. How will this be affected by the two tier verification?

      2. I use my Google account for a variety of other services, for example the Google Reader, Google+, etc. Again, Firefox remembers the password. How will this be affected?

      3. I use an Android mobile, which again uses the Gmail account for syncing. Again, what will be the effect on this?

      4. I must say that I’m a little uncomfortable using the same password for all these services. I really don’t care if anybody hacks my Google Reader account, but if that gives them access to my Gmail account as well, that’s a problem! Is there any way to use different levels of security for each of these services?

Sorry of all the questions, but I’d really appreciate some expert guidance…

    • in reply to: What’s going on with PDF files? #1345103

If you go to the following link you will be able to download a FREE PDF unlocker. Only problem (as far as I know) is tht it only works with 32 Bit systems. I have used it on a few occasions without problems.

When installed it puts a shortcut onto your desktop and all you have to do is drag and drop the pdf file onto it and a few seconds later you have a normal PDF file that you can do as you want with.

      http://free-pdf-unlocker.en.softonic.com/

Problem with this program is that it ‘Doesn’t work with new PDF files’ – not sure quite what that means, but it wouldn’t work with one recently with PDF version 1.6.

Does anyone have any recommendations for one that works with later versions?

      Chris
