AskWoody LoungerThanks, Doc and Joe for your input.
Supposing as ‘ow I was to splash out for partioning software, which would be best, given that it would not be a very frequently used tool?

AskWoody LoungerAh, therein lies the problem! I don’t have any partitioning software, not current access to same. I have usually used FDisk to partition, then formatted, then done a clean install. I guess this may not be possible?

AskWoody LoungerOK for step 1-4. Problem is that box ‘Use this carrier code to make international calls’ is greyed out. I have to change to ‘Country/region: United States’ to get this option. I don’t think it can be accessed by other countries. Do I have to move to the US?

AskWoody LoungerI am considering purchase of a Sony VIAO notebook. As David notes, it is not supplied with a Windows CD; the CD contents are placed in a special partition on the hard disk, which is accessible during boot up.
I would want to partition the hard disk into two logical disks, as I have done with all my computers. Would this be possible and relatively simple with the Windows file on this separate partition? What if any would be the challenges? Are all the drivers there as well? I’m not sure I’m getting correct information from the salesman…

Can you tell me more? If the techies are confused, I sure am! Where can I find the difference between PCL 6 and PCL 5e?

AskWoody LoungerJohn,
Thanks for your questions.
> Is the printer a local printer (attached via a parallel printer cable, or perhaps USB cable) on one of the PCs?
Yes> Have you arranged for it to be “shared” on the network, as a network printer?
Yes> Or have you an Ethernet connection to a JetDirect box to the printer (or a JetDirect card IN the printer – can’t remember if it can have one!). — doesn’t sound if this applies.
No
Regarding earlier suggestions, these give the impression that ALL PCs on the LAN MUST have the drivers installed, regardless of whether they are actually printing–is this correct? I haven’t yet had time to get to all of them to check this.
However, the correct and updated drivers ARE installed on both the host (to which the printer is connected) and the guest (which is trying to print). This fails with the PCL6 driver, and blocks the printer queue totally, including for those printing the the PCL driver provided with Windows. However, if the document is printed to the PCL (Windows-provided) driver, it prints, but sometimes with odd spaces between letters and without some of the features that the PCL6 driver provides.
Confused…

AskWoody LoungerThanks for your swift response.
No, it seems only to affect the ‘skin’ of the Media Player, and the dialog boxes in PageMaker that do not use the Windows API.
I’ll have a go at reinstalling Martlett when I can access the computer.
Everything was OK with the same video driver before the clean reinstall, so I doubt the video driver, but I’ll follow this one up too.
Scandisk done but no problems found, no change in the problem..
Again, thanks for your ideas.

AskWoody LoungerOn my computer (XP Home), 822925 disables the Index function in the Windows Help system (Help and Support Center), just as the earlier patch did. I had to uninstall to get the Index function back. This problem was the topic of an earlier thread in May.

AskWoody LoungerI think that you may find that the culprit is the April 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE6 SP1, (Q813489) from Microsoft. I had the same problem, and removing this patch solved the problem.
Once again proved the maxim that installing MS updates is a risky business!

AskWoody LoungerThanks, Joe, especially for pointing me in the direction of a great resource.
Actually I found out that the culprit is the April 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE6 SP1, (Q813489) from Microsoft. Removing that solved the problem.
Once again proved the maxim that installing MS updates is a risky business!

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |
