    • Thanks Joe.

With some difficulty I finally managed to find and remove the partitions. However, I seem now to be in a worse state! The Windows startup still doesn’t find a hard disk, but now I can’t even boot to Linux – it just goes to something called grub! This seems to offer very limited options!

    • Funny thing is, Properties – Digital Signatures – Digital Signature Details on the notebook still shows that the certificate is no valid for the requested usage, while on the desktop computer, it shows acceptable. I wish I understood computers!

Does anyone know a good source of clear, simple information on Digital Signatures?

      Chris

    • OK, sorry, solved!

Went to Internet Properties – Content, Certificates. Found Adobe certificates in the Other People tab and the Untrusted Publsihers tab on the notebook, not on the desktop. So removed both. Now I can install!

What a pain!. Lord knows how those entries got there!

      Sorry to cause bother….

    • I have been looking at the Digital Signatures tab in the file properties for the installer file. On my desktop, this shows ‘This digital signature is OK’, while on the notebook, it shows ‘A certificate was explicitly revoked by its issuer’. This seems to be connected with Verisign.

The files on both machines are exactly the same, so it has to be some difference in settings on the computers, probably in Registry. I searched for ‘Verisign’ in the Registries of both units. The notebook had a key ‘HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftInternet Account Manager’ which does not exist on the desktop. I copied this and then deleted it, but this had no impact.

Note: both have a key at HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftInternet Account ManagerPreconfigured’ with the same data on both machines.

I am not sure if I am any further forward. Anyone know anything about the Digital Signatures? How can I get them unrevoked?

    • Thanks for the idea.

No, I’m not using IE7. Primarily Firefox, with IE6 still installed.

Assume your reference to Security Settings in the Internet Properties (Security tab? Can’t see anything there which might imact.

Not clear what the connection might be; I’ve had not difficulty downloading the install file, just Windows Installer won’t let me install it…

    • in reply to: Adobe Acrobat & Reader 8.1 #1067899

I have just downloaded v8.1 of the reader from this address recommended by Tony. When I try to install it, it goes through the preliminary set up screen (Processing Adobe Reader 8.1.0) then pops up a message box:

      Windows Installer

The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation

I am the one and only user of this computer and have full rights (as far as I know). Any ideas?

    • in reply to: Windows Update Install Checker (Home/Pro) #1061717

I have installed QFECheck and run it. It keeps on telling me that KB923689 must be reinstalled. I have tried removing the hotfix and reinstalling, but still get the same response. I have downloaded the hotfix again (turns out it is the same as I have on my archive), but again, no change.

      Any ideas?

I have been using PowerDesk for many years, but still use version 4.0, because I love the Dialog Helper, and that seemed to get lost from the later versions. Is there any other alternative that provides such a function?

Well, at least I’m not alone. These are the same symptoms which I experience. As I said, doesn’t seem to be causing any problems, but…

To ‘eliminate’ the search bar, right click on the tool bar, select ‘Customize…’, and drag the thingee to the window that opens.

To resurrect it, do the reverse.

    • in reply to: CPU Usage (FireFox v1.5.0.3) #1013208

      Thanks for all the thoughts.

I have tried in the Safe Mode, result is the same – Process Image Name firefox.exe takes over 90% of CPU usage on my desk top, over 60% on my lap top.

I do have Google Toolbar installed, but the Safe Browsing feature is disabled.

If I open another tab, and transfer focus to the new tab, the usage becomes normal, even with AVG still open in the unfocussed tab. – currently I’m like that and firefox.exe is taking max-10%. Return focus to the AVG tab, CPU usage immediately returns to >90%.

I reinstalled Windows (XP Home) on this computer only ten days ago. AVG is always running, I have also regularly run Ad-Aware and Spybot, all clean.

Don’t think I’ve seen this on any other web site.

Don’t think its causing any real problems apart from a slowdown when I’m browsing that site, but it’s a little worrying…

      Thanks again for ideas…

    • in reply to: CPU Usage (FireFox v1.5.0.3) #1013067

I see it on every page which is linked to this home page. I agree its probably the scrolling marquee, but it’s draining a huge amount of CPU usage, which slows down my computer very noticably.

The marquee runs in IE, but I do not see anything like the same level of CPU usage.

Why would it drain so much more CPU usage in Firefox?

Perhaps it’s because I don’t understand Latin, but it seems I getting a different dialog box to you.

I don’t see Plug-ins; if I click “View & Edit Actions”, there is no sign of the Validation Plugin…

Is there any way to determine what plug-ins are installed, and the version numbers?

      Thanks

    • in reply to: USB Drive Drivers #973817

      Doc,

Many thanks for that. Your response prompted me to do what I should have done first: Google for solutions. After some searching, I found one.

At this web site Dynamic Web Solutions; USB Drive FAQs, under “III. Installation inquiries” I found reference to a “USB Drive driver file for Windows 98SE”, to be downloaded as this zipfile. I downloaded and installed this to my laptop with Windows ME, and lo-and-behold, it seems to work! One has to go through a full hardware install for each new USB drive, but at least one doesn’t have to look elsewhere for drivers.
