I’m not sure I understand. I am using Internet Explorer at work and yahoo’s website. I have a whole list of contacts in there and I can see when the yahoo.com and sbcglobal.net people are online; not the others. But that’s OK, I would not expect to see aol people, or roadrunner, or comcast, etc., but since yahoo and sbcgobal and att are joined at the hipe and my friend with at&t sees me online, why can’t I see her online?

So, I don’t use an IM client and I hope that’s what you meant by contact status.

Are you using an IM client to see the status?

Do you see the contact status in the webmail application?

After I downloaded an update on the Zoom software, from another computer, I uninstalled the Zoom software, and the reinstalled the update. I also switched to another Zoom wireless network adapter. That seemed to have worked in that the computer was no longer rebooting every 30 seconds or so. However, it was absolutely impossible for me to get that computer back on the network.

Our computer guy came in and took the compute with him. He seems to agree that I solved the problem partially, however, he also said MacAfee Anti-Virus software may have been corrupted and stopped working. Since I was off when he brought the computer back. I’m not sure what he did but the computer seems fine. However, then we started having the same problem with my bosses computer late yesterday. I am convinced that he bent the network adapter and that has at least some bearing on this problem, but I could not test my theory because he has to go out and purchase another network adapter.

All very, very strange; I’ve never seen anything like this before that was not virus related, but he says the computer was not infected?

I have done that already and it shows me nothing. I was going to defrag overnight and see if that helps.

When attempting to delete it in Add/Remove Programs, I get a message listing a whole bunch of programs that it says depend on Windows Search and might not work properly if I uninstall it? Is it safe to proceed?

How often are you booting a system that it really matters?

      Joe

Every morning! We do not leave the computers in the office running overnight.

You might want to check your BIOS settings for the boot sequence. Perhaps the USB bus has priority over your hard drive, which would very rarely be what you want. If you set the BIOS to check the hard drive first, hopefully you can solve the above problem.

I haven’t a clue as to how to do that.

Oops – sorry – Windows XP Professional

Well, I found out was that the computer was not booting from the CD. Once I found that out, I was able to get into Recovery Mode. I went through the steps found on Microsoft’s website and it never would work using the command prompt REN or ren. However, the steps one of you showed using COPY instead of REN did the trick for me. I was able to back up the file and install the new file and boot windows. The only thing I’m not sure about right now is that I need to again change the boot sequencce because at some point during this whole scenario I had to change it to boot from the CD and when I rebooted I got a message prompting me to press any key to boot from the CD. Will that happen every time I boot? If so, I have to change that back, right? Is there a way to change it from Windows or do I have to go back to command prompt?

Microsoft wanted me to pay to fix what their automatic update screw up!

I cannot boot in Safe Mode – it goes right to the blue screen.

I tried to boot from the CD – it does not give me the opportunity to start the Recovery Console. Hopefully, I’m doing that correctly, but I don’t think I was ever at the point where it was starting the install process. I placed the CD in the drive; turned off the computer. Then I turned the computer on with the CD in the drive. Am I doing this right? I never got the opportunity to start recovery console.

Only press F2 if you need to change the boot order so that you boot from the Cd before the HD. You want to boot from the CD and let the Windows install process starts. You should be given the opportunity to start the Recovery Console.

Thanks so much for leading me in the right direction. As I was following the instructions in “Systematic Method of Fixing Common Problems, I go to thinking and went looking for normal.dot – my computer did not find it, even though I found a normal.dot in the templates folder. In any case, I deleted the old normal.dot and created a new normal.dot and now everything is working just fine.

      Thanks again.

I have no idea what file is involved. This happens when I load Word, before any file is opened. I tried clearing that box whenI got the error message and that did not help.

    • in reply to: OR expression (2003) #1144443

      Actually, this worked just fine:

Terms of Payment: IIf([MemSociety]=-1,”Due Upon Receipt.”,”Net 30 Days.”) & IIf([Date]=>1/1/2009 and [MemSociety]=0,” One Half Balance is Due upon Completion of Service and Balance Within 30 days of Invoice Date, Unless Other Arrangements Have Been Made”,””)

Sorry to be so long in responding, and for the fractured stuff last week; came down with something that didn’t want to let go! I’m all set and appreciate the help, Hans.

    • in reply to: OR expression (2003) #1142121

I can’t understand using &, Hans. This has to be either or. So if MemSociety is true, the statement would read one way, but only if it is false, should it read, “One Half Balance…..”When I use the expression you send me it actually prints both, i.e., “Net 30 Days. One Half Balance is Due upon Completion of Service and Balance Within 30 days of Invoice Date, Unless Other Arrangements Have Been Made”
