When Google Reader went away, I switched to NetVibes (http://www.netvibes.com). It has the advantage of being able to pull RSS feeds plus displaying links and personalized info. It is free.

    • in reply to: Where should Eudora data be stored? #1505614

You will get very good advice from the Eudora Listserv, a long-time users group filled with Eudora experts (and past employees, I’m pretty sure). To subscribe, send an email to join-eudora-win@hades.listmoms.net, and put Gazelle in the Subject line.

    • in reply to: How to set up mailing list for a group? #1483668

The easiest way would be to set up a Yahoo group. A more secure way would be to create a listserv. You would need to check with your Internet Service Provider to learn if he offers something like Mailman to manage a listserv. Listservs provide more security for a group’s subscribers.

    • in reply to: Recommend cloud-based club photo-management sites? #1466694

This may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I’ve set up Photo folders for several non-profit groups using Yahoo groups. You can set up the Yahoo group under your club’s name and define permission levels. Yahoo doesn’t provide a lot of options in the Photo folders, but you can create albums and add photos to them, define access rights, etc. The only downside is that the photos are only viewable once you are inside the Yahoo group. There is no public access; only group members have access. But for my non-profits, that serves their membership’s needs. See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/groups to learn more about Yahoo groups.

    • in reply to: Eudora not downloading Gmail #1461753

Until a while ago Eudora 7.1 would check my Hotmail and G-mail accounts. Then I trashed my laptop, killed it dead. I re-installed Eudora on the new Win 7×64 machine and was able to recover all the data off the drive, but the personalities did not survive. User name, password etc. are obvious, but what about SMTP Server? Should Authentication be allowed? And for Incoming mail should the Server be POP or IMAP?

David, I use Eudora to pull mail from my Gmail account. Here are my settings:

    • in reply to: Spreadsheet “locked for editing…” #1457689

If, on the off chance, you have a Word document open that is calling that spreadsheet (e.g., for a mail merge), even if you close and reopen the Excel spreadsheet you will get the “locked for editing” message because Word still has an open hook to it.

May be totally irrelevant, but I thought I’d toss it out there.

    • I didn’t know there were still dial up internet connections. How do they work where you are, do you have an old modem or is it a software on the PC thing?

Sometimes the generation gap just smacks you right across the head. 😎 Yes, there are still places where the only way to get access to the Internet is via a phone line. Although 56k modems are no longer standard equipment on new PC builds, most people living in those rural areas won’t necessarily have a new PC, I’ll bet. If you don’t have cable or satellite or dish, then you plug a phone connection into a fax/modem card on the back of your computer. I pay for seriously high-speed broadband, but it has been very unreliable in my rural community with high packet loss. When it goes down (as it regularly does), I use a free NetZero (http://www.netzero.net/) dialup connection for emergency Internet access. NetZero provides a phone number that I dial via my modem. When connected, voila I’ve got Internet access, albeit very slow. But for emergencies, generally all I want is email access, so speed isn’t critical. But my friend in Abilene may not have any other option other than sitting at the public library to view my photos.

    • in reply to: How to run Google’s Android OS on a Windows PC #1443789

Ditto on Bluestacks, Fred. I discovered it two years ago when I wanted a way to access the Google Play Store so that I could side-load apps onto my original Kindle Fire. I didn’t have a cell phone or other Android device–just my PC. BlueStacks works great. I wrote a how-to article about it at http://eweforia.wordpress.com/category/how-to/

It takes only four steps to get BlueStacks installed. The rest of the steps explain how to back up and copy the apps to DropBox and then install them on the Kindle.

    • in reply to: XTree Gold – remember? #1441922

I was an XTree Gold user and it pretty much set the bar for what I expect a file manager to do. I migrated to xplorer2 by zabkat.com and have yet to be disappointed. I have never stopped learning new things that I can do with it, and their userguide says that you can sync two directories. I use their split screen as a routine view. I think you’ll like it.

    • in reply to: RIPping an audio CD with multiple tracks to one MP3 #1395729

I use mergemp3 from http://www.shchuka.com/software/mergemp3/ It’s free. I discovered it when I needed to copy an audiobook CD to MP3. I use http://www.mediamonkey.com/ to do the ripping and then mergemp3 to do the joining.

    • in reply to: Software subscriptions #1395715

I use Adobe’s products to earn my living. The thing I hate about the subscription model is that if you don’t pay your monthly fee, you don’t have access to your software. I want the availability of my software to be independent of my ability to pay for it. If I’m having a cash-flow problem, the last thing I need is to lose access to the tools that are required to generate my income. I want it to be MY decision as to when I update my software, not Adobe’s. I want forever access to the tools for which I purchased a license. If I stop my subscription, then I want to at least be able to continue using the product as it existed up to that date. And the other thing that I hate is that Adobe is not offering options. You have no choice but to go with the subscription model. I prefer choices. And I’m okay with having to pay more sometimes to get those choices.

    • in reply to: Intermittent wireless connection #1342582

Generally when my router is working and I can’t get access to the Internet, it is because the ISP is malfunctioning. My ISP is Comcast. Over the years, they have improved their intermittent outage issues considerably, but the cables in my neighborhood are old and faulty. Outages can last minutes, hours, and days. One time the service rep determined that a cable hub on a pole on a highway a mile away was the source of the problem; when a semitruck went past, it jiggled the connection and Internet went down; when the next semitruck went past, it jiggled the connection and the Internet went back up. If I were you, I’d call your ISP.

    • in reply to: Eudora 7.1 — How move from XP to Win7 64bit #1317958

I’ve never had any trouble moving my Eudora files from one machine to another, regardless of OS. I’ve been using Eudora since 1999 at least, and am currently running it on Win7Pro 64-bit with minimal problems. 1. Locate and copy to CD or flash drive all of your Eudora mailboxes and files containing your address book and set-up prefs. Generally, these files are located in the same folder as the Eudora .exe file. For example, C:Program Files (x86)QualcommEudora. You should back-up the following: *.mbx, *.toc, eudora.ini, NNdbase.txt, Nndbase.toc, rcpdbase.txt, deudora.ini, filters.pce; and these folders: Filters, Nickname, Sigs, Stationery 2. Install Eudora on your new computer. 3. Make sure that Eudora is NOT running. 4. Copy the files and folders from the CD or flash drive to the directory in which Eudora was installed, making sure that you overwrite the existing file each time. 5. Start Eudora and verify that all of your mailboxes are present. You may need to tweak some settings. 6. You will probably need to create a new mail account to connect Eudora to your mail server. The file(s) in the Personalities folder should have taken care of this, I think. I think at one point during a move, I didn’t worry about copying specific files and folders; I just copied everything in the entire old Eudora folder and pasted it over the new Eudora folder. If I remember correctly, everything worked just fine. I hope this helps.

    • in reply to: Center cursor in window #1272562

Ted, I wasn’t sure if my version of Windows or brand of mouse were pertinent to the question. I’m on Windows 7 using a LogiTech Trackball. Your suggestion, although not specifically what I was looking for, may be a usable work-around, and I thank you much for it. My only concern is that I use the Control key for a lot of tasks and it may be distracting to have the flashing circles display every time I hit the Control key. So if you run across a shortcut that will center the cursor in the monitor, please let me know.

    • in reply to: Do monkeys have 20 fingers? #1223524

And all monkeys (even chimpanzees and orangutans) have nothing like the flexibility humans have with their thumbs.

Chimpanzees and orangutans are not monkeys. They are great apes, as are gorillas and humans. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_ape
