    • in reply to: Unbootable recovery disk makes backups useless #1585325

Is there a way to include the driver for an external hard drive on the System Repair disk that I create when doing a Win10 upgrade?
I created a System Repair disk when I upgraded to Win10 AU (1607), but I didn’t see an option to identify an external drive. That’s where I keep my system images. In a test today, my System Repair disk booted fine but it couldn’t find the external drive. It offered to let me provide the drive’s driver, but I would rather have it included in the System Repair disk, to reduce possibility of slip-ups.

Update Nov. 27: Thanks to Paul T for his reply, which I have filed for future reference. I have now discovered that my reported problem came from my own absent-mindedness: I was looking at the wrong external hard drive. I have now tested the System Repair disk with the right external drive connected, it found my images, and presented a choice of which to restore. After making an image, which goes to folder WindowsSystemImage[PC name], I rename it to WindowsSystemImage[PC name yyyy-mm-dd] to identify the image date. System Repair has no problem working with this structure, and it keeps the root folder list simple.

Boxcryptor virtual drive unavailable under different userID
Yesterday I installed Boxcryptor 2.0 for pre-encryption of the sensitive data that I back up to the cloud. I use Norton 360 for this backup, Dropbox only for some sync with an Android phone, and Google Drive only for sharing. All sensitive data is in five folders on the same user data drive as the Dropbox and Google Drive folders. So the Boxcryptor setup required removing Dropbox and Google Drive, then addition of the five folders for backup. One of the five folders is Outlook, so the Outlook profile had to be rebuilt to point to Outlook in the Boxcryptor virtual drive. All this was accomplished as the admin user.
However, I normally work as a standard user. There, the Boxcryptor setup refused the removal of Dropbox and Google Drive, so I can’t add the five sensitive folders to make the encrypted files available for use.
The system is Lenovo ThinkPad T430 with Win7 Pro x64 and the 500 GB internal HDD partitioned into C: for all software (fully patched) and D: for all user data. Security software is Norton 360 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Full backups are local.
Can anyone tell me how to fix the standard user’s Boxcryptor setup without a major restructuring of my user folders?

      Disabling NIS did not work.
I looked into Rui’s suggested thread, about resetting all group policies to default. I downloaded and ran the BAT file. This fixed the problem – MagicJack is now working again, under both standard user and administrator.
Thanks to Rui and Jerry for their suggestions.

Are you sure it’s not NIS that’s causing it?

No, I’m not sure. Should I disable some feature(s) and retry?

Try a system restore to a date prior to the problem.
Also, boot into safe mode with networking. Then download and run Malwarebytes.

The only available restore point is noon today EST, probably because on the weekend I ran CCleaner. In any case, the latest date that I know preceded the problem would be last April; even without CCleaner, I doubt that I would have a restore point that far back.

I have been running Malwarebytes full scans monthly for years, and have had the Pro version installed since Oct. 24.

I do have a system image dated June 30. Since then, I have updated 15 apps, so would prefer another solution if possible.

What security apps are you using?

I have Norton Internet Security and Malwarebytes AntiMalware both active full-time. I run a Malwarebytes full scan monthly.

Thanks to Bruce for the very prompt and targeted reply!
Following the advice in the Norton Community thread of your link, I have disabled the Norton Anti-Spam add-in, and the extra folders no longer appear.
I’ll look into the extra question posed there, and possibly find and try the new (beta) add-in version. Meanwhile, the main issue seems resolved.
