    • in reply to: Windows Update for Windows 7 after 1-2020 #2486669

That’s a very interesting question. I continue to run W7, it gets security updates but nothing else, I think it is pretty well patched and it runs almost as fast as when it was new, and I’ve had a number of screwed up file system issues that always got straightened out. I only had to do a re-install once in about 7 years of use, and I guess I’ll stay with it until you can’t get the hardware to run it. My wife has an Acer laptop that had a cruddy install of W10 on it, I tried to put W7 on it and it barked at me throughout the installation that the hardware wasn’t W7 compliant, but it did install and actually ran for a month or two then bombed out for reasons I never discovered. And it had hardware errors in the SATA drive, so I replaced it with a SSD, found a download for a clean W10 and installed and it runs way better than the original install, so I suppose that’s where I’d go if I couldn’t find compatible hardware any longer

    • in reply to: Indexes getting destroyed #2445305

LAST UPDATE: Indexes are still getting destroyed, search functions extremely erratically, and so I tried poster Alex’s suggestion above,  to use “Everything” as a search engine and it does work. I really don’t have the time or desire to dig deeper into what in the devil’s name happened to my installation…this used  to work impeccably and I haven’t installed anything new recently. A ‘repair’ install may be in order, or revert to a saved restore point. Again, thank you to all who contributed here.

Thanks for the tip. “Everything” works well. My indexing comes and goes and I’m lost as to what to change or remove…computer works well in all other aspects.

I will try that. Although, I’ve been using CCleaner for years and haven’t run into this index/search issue before. But as I noted, the indexes seem to be remaining intact, and search is running. Thanks for the tip and the contribution of knowledge here.

LATEST UPDATE:  Indexes seem to be remaining in tact, not sure what has changed other than a good cleanout, defrag, system file check, s**tware scan, etc. But search now continues to work consistently. Thanks to everyone who contributed here.

That was my take on Win10 v. Win7, as well

I found the ‘view’ tab  but no search settings when I highlighted the C: drive and tried right and left clicking on it. No search options or index items were seen.

Where do you get this specific version of Win10 that you mention?

I think your remark could apply to any program you need to run.

    • in reply to: Fearful of Win10? There’s an answer #2376649

I agree with both of you guys. 6Gb is a bit skimpy, 8 is much better, but that’s what this ACER came with and it was in our budget. I didn’t know Microsoft was giving away free Win10 installs, but the one they are giving, the one I got is orders of magnitude better than what came on the ACER. The original was so slow you sometimes would wonder if it had crashed or was in the middle of something…there’s no drive activity light so you could only guess. The new free 10 install runs WAY better, it’s actually usable even with the 6Gb, it boots up way faster. I’m sure some of this is attributable to the SSD I installed but I think the new install of the O/S is a much cleaner one than what ACER put in, loaded down with junkware.  I’m even considering such an install for myself since Win7’s days are numbered. Yes, I spent a few hours on this but I learned a lot.  Thanks for your input.

    • in reply to: Can I upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro #2375909

Have you tried the various compatibility modes? I’m not a Win10 expert, but there is a way to access this, possibly a right click on the icon of the program in question, and see if compatibility mode with earlier Windows versions clears up your issues. I’ve tried this many times and it works often.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. The new owner says she will slug it out in English as far as the OS goes, and just try to change it to Spanish in any apps she’s using. Let’s all wish her good luck.

The Win7Pro on there runs nicely even though the box is a low end HP, with only 4Gb RAM. Still runs way better than the original Win10 that was on there. Since I haven’t heard from her in nearly a month, I’d assume she’s doing ok. Thanks again to all contributors

      Thanks for your reply.

So your take is that the paid version of 0Patch is worth the price? I never installed the MS Extended Patch software…I still get windows defender updates and some other minor stuff, but the 0Patch will get me up to date and it’s worth the 22 Euros, do I have that about right?

      Thanks again for your input.

I’m talking strictly of Win7Pro. I have no intention of going to Win10.
