can’t help with the code, but there’s a good freeware program at this site

      http://www.users.qwest.net/~sharman1/

called batch thumbs that should help with converting the .jpg’s to thumbnails

Here’s another free training site I found

      http://www.netfolk.co.uk/netfolk/access/

it’as mainly an Access site, but they seem to offer other programs as well.

      Thanks for the replies.
I tried the new code, but it still wouldn’t work, so I went back and created a query as suggested and now have the form in the order that I wanted.

Would you be willing to share your macro?

I’m still trying to teach myself Excel macros (used to do quite a few in Lotus) and I know that would be a very handy one as I hate like heck going page by page locking and unlocking. And the odd time you forget to lock even one page, is when a user inadvertently changes some critical formula.

Thanks if you are willing to share, but understand if not.

I know this is slightly off the topic, but would you have any recommendations of where a person who would like to get into database development might look for job opportunities. I took the basic and intermediate courses a couple of years ago, but until recently have not really had the opportunity to do much with ACCESS. Most of my learning has been on a need to know for the job at hand type. I have found that until I have a reason to use a program or even various features of it, I can’t really apply whatever I learn in a course. It just happened that after thinking about my current assignment, I realized it would be best accomplished by using ACCESS. No one in the department I work in has any knowledge of ACCESS so it’s been a good learning experience for me as I’ve worked on developing my first real database. Although it is likely very basic by most of the standards of the people using this forum, it will suit the purposes of the people who will be using it.
I really enjoy using Excel/Lotus but think that databases can do so much more if designed properly. I was quite fortunate to be given a comprehensive overview of a very complex database a couple of years ago. It was created for a large national company to gather all their financial and performance records from regional offices. I would like to be capable of creating something similar but need to get some more practical experience first. I think I have a good grasp of relational concepts. Do you have any suggestions as to what type of position or company might have opportunities for someone with basic skills who would like to (and is capable of) further develop them?

    • in reply to: skipping blank fields in a report #525865

I’m just learning but, if you have a query that provides the data for your report, why not change your query by putting criteria in the fields that are coming up blank. The criteria would specify that it only chooses fields that are not blank. Then you could run your report. If later you wanted to see those particular fields you could change your query back by ommitting the criteria.

    • in reply to: Bound control and check boxes #525734

I want to make the database as easy to use as possible. I am in a situation where I realize that for the uses the department wants to make of the data, a database is the best method of storing the information. I know very little about ACCESS and the rest of the department knows nothing. I would like to create forms, queries and reports with simple instructions so that the others can use it when I am no longer around (on contract).

I would like to have check boxes on the forms to make data input easier. At the moment my forms require that you type Yes or leave the default No. I have found if I type -1 it will appear as Yes, but that is not something that would make sense to a typical user.

I was under the impression that it was an option, but perhaps I am mistaken. I know I have seen it in the past, but I think it was in a table. I really don’t want the average user to open the tables. I would rather they do all their input thru forms. Then run whatever queries or reports they require.

Thanks I’ll give it a try.

thanks for the replies…guess I’ll leave it as memo for now

    • in reply to: Non-relative copy #524843

I’ve used both cri’s and David’s methods depending on the situation. However for cri’s I just insert a ^ at the front of the formula (trick I learned in Lotus) then find and replace in the column I copied to , in order to get rid of the ^. Often I have to switch back and forth between relative and absolute in a formula so that I can copy more formulas.

      eg. ^=+C7/$B$7*L7 ^=+E7/$B$7*L7 ^=+G7/$B$7*L7

      ^=+C9/B9*L9 ^=+E9/B9*L9 ^=+G9/B9*L9

in the first row make B7 absolute then copy across
change B7, back to relative then copy down

it’s still not the easiest method but the more you can copy a formula, the less likely you are to make a mistake, and the quicker it is.

Inserting the ^ is also handy for when you want to copy the formula into a text cell for explanation.

Thanks, I feel so foolish for not having noticed that in the print preview.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve never used the camera before, but it works great.

    • in reply to: Conditional Format #520153

That’s interesting about the one $ sign. Are there specific rules around using only one $ sign? eg. before or after the letter

I frequently do a lot of copying of conditional formatting. Usually I have to add or remove the $ signs depending on the effect I want to achieve and the relation to the cell I am referencing.

Thanks, It works just fine now.

Learned something new today, will have to watch for that in the future.
