    • in reply to: LinkSys Router with Cable email not compatible #918326

I’m sure this issue was resolved several months ago, but I just ran into it yesterday with the same Linksys Router (WRT54G) and Shaw Cable in Canada. After setting up a mixed wired and wireless network, I had no problem accessing the internet, but couldn’t connect Outlook for email.
The problem is the mail server alias (in this case “shawmail”) used by Shaw. It doesn’t work with this router. Once I changed the mail server in Outlook to the full mail server name, the problem was resolved. Specific mail server names will of course depend on where you live.

Hope this helps. It took me a couple of hours to figure out the answer to the problem.

      Hi Dave,

I don’t think that’s the case. We’re a pretty small non-profit organization with an over-extended peer-to-peer network. (Only 1 part-time IT person). Jefferson’s probably on the right track about deleting the account and setting it up again.
Also, I’m going to check to see if any Service Packs have been installed. Skimming through the Microsoft KB it looks like there may have been a similar problem with Outlook XP that was corrected in SR-1.

      Thanks again for the help.

      Hi Jefferson,

The remember password box in E-mail Accounts has been checked and the problem still occurs. I’m not sure about the Windows XP Log on. (Not near the machine right now).

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
We are dealing with the same issue on one of our machines running Outlook XP on WinXP Home Edition. I use OL2000 at home, so I’m not familiar with Outlook XP issues.

I use Publisher 2000, so I don’t know if this helps. But it seems there’s a problem connected to Norton Anti-Virus. Here’s the link to the KB article

    • in reply to: Windows 2000 compatibility (Project 4.1) #660848

      Gary,

      Thanks again for the help.
I know this is starting to get off topic, but what’s your opinion of Project 2000?
I use Office 2000 and actually prefer it to Office XP–no task panes, etc. Would the integration between Office and Project be better if I upgrade directly to 2000?
And are there enough improvements in Project 2000 to offset the additional cost?

      Gary,

There aren’t any 4.1a downloads at the Microsoft site. I went ahead and installed 4.1 anyway. So far no problems, but because I’m a complete beginner with Project I haven’t tried anything complicated yet. crossfingers
You’re probably right about upgrading to 98 at least, just to be on the safe side.

      Thanks for the advice.

    • in reply to: Office 2000 Developer (2000) #650945

There’s a copy for sale on eBay right now. The current bid is $375.00 US. If memory serves me well, Office Developer 2000 usually ends up selling for between $500 and $600 on eBay.

And of course, caveat emptor. crossfingers

    • in reply to: learning macros (excel/word 2002) #637913

I’ve just started to learn about macros and VBA. I’d recommend “Word 2000 Developer’s Handbook” by Guy Hart-Davis for Word 2000. It a huge book–1250 pages–but quite readable, and it walks you through the basics. I think there’s an earlier version for Word 97. The list price is $75.00 Cdn ($49.99 US, 36.99 UK). I paid about $20.00 Cdn on sale. I’ve noticed it’s available at Half Price Computer Books in Vancouver at 50% off. I believe they ship to the US.
I’m also using Microsoft’s Office 2000 Visual Basic For Applications Fundamentals. It’s a Step-by-Step type of book that includes exercises on CD-ROM. There are exercises for all the applications in Office 2000 Professional. It lists at $60.00 Cdn. I found a remaindered copy for $20.00 Cdn at local store.

    • in reply to: Macro or Rules Wizard Help (Outlook 2000) #627622

I think you can do this from the Rules Wizard.
      1. After you start the Wizard, choose Flag Message from Someone.
      2. Click Next and choose From People or Distribution List. After that you have to make choices using the Rule Description section.
      3. Choose the address you want to Mark As Read and then click on flag message for action in a number of days. Choose Read from the Flag drop-down list and pick the number of days.
      4. Finish the Wizard.

      Hope this works. crossfingers
