Thanks for your posts. Soon after I posted this, the video card went a bit crazy. I took it out and re-seated it again, without benefit. Things started freezing. The card I had in there was getting old. I also noticed the fan wasn’t working. So I went out and bought a new card. (GEForce FX5200 128MB). I don’t play high end games and the computer is old enough that it is not worth paying $400 for a high end card (this one was $99 at BestBuy).
What I did notice is that the picture is brighter and there are no shadows going left to right from dialog boxes. Looks like my old IBM G74 monitor is still working well (I wanted an LCD monitor)

If you go to http://www.GRC.com[/url%5D (Gibson research) they have a small program called ShootTheMessenger which disables the messenger. This works but I like the solution offered by mark Start – Run and enter services.msc. I agree, It is very annoying.
