No I do not customize folders, but I tried that just for kicks – nada – I did boot to safe mode and I am not sure what you intend to discover by that problem going away, as everything goes away when I do that. I did not have the pane on the left hand side and was able to move icons and perform drag and drop functions. The funny thing I noticed was that safe mode only appears in a small defined area of my monitor as does the splash and startup screen problems in my previous post topic.

      Any suggestions?

Yes, it does look like an explorer window, but look closer, it IS my desktop.

I cannot drag and drop files on the desktop and cannot move icons by dragging. This is the weirdest thing I have seen.

      Any ideas??

I have a Fujitsu series C 7631 Mobile desktop. Disabling the splash is easy to do, but what I wish to do is have it start up fulll screen like it used to. Nothing looked familiar in the boot options. Any ideas??

Sorry, buddy. The little bit of further research I did for this topic turned up nothing useful to assist you at this point. I am not sure what the problem might be.

      Anyone else have any ideas?…….Anyone?……..Bueller…..?

      Eric ~

Hmmm…..you say they are NTFS, eh? I assume you are creating the limited user account as an Admin user. How are you switching to the other user account? I am unsure of what you mean by “switching that user to non-Admin blocks sign-on”. Please expound. ( BTW – am very suspicious of MS motives, but I do not believe this to be to get you to XP Pro)

      Jon~

Windows XP Home does have a Backup Program

In describing the differences between Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional, I say, “that Windows XP Professional adds a backup program. That’s true, it does install a backup program and place it on the Start menu. But Windows XP Home also comes with a backup program. But it doesn’t install the program, nor does it put it on the Start menu. Instead, the backup program remains hidden on your CD, and you must install it yourself. Microsoft officially explains the process here, but this is the jist:

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup:

      CD-ROM Drive:VALUEADDMSFTNTBACKUP

(Replace the words CD-ROM Drive with the letter of your CD-ROM drive.)

When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

The Wizard will install the Backup program to your computer, and add it to the Start menu. (You should see the little “New Program Installed” message by your Start button, and the highlights will lead you to the actual program.)

Potential problem alert: Some computers that come with Windows XP pre-installed don’t include a copy of the Windows XP CD. Instead, they include a “Restore” CD. That CD simply restores your computer to the state it was in as it left the factory. It’s not an original Windows XP installation CD.

      Eric ~

I had the same problem with a Fujitsu Mobile Desktop that came with XP Home. The first problem is that any OEM OS version is NOT the same as a regular full retail version. Others would like to tell you differently, but that is bull and has been confirmed by Fujitsu and Microsoft directly to me. The second problem is that your system is probably formatted FAT32. There are many fine features that will not be enabled unless your unit is formatted NTFS. This is clearly indicated in Microsoft’s own “Call To Action” to manufacturers installing XP on OEM equipment. I personally went round and round with the OEM on this issue and got nowhere until I worked my way up the corporate hierarchy and convinced them after relentless rhetoric to ship me, free of charge, a full retail version of XP Home, brand new still in the box with a price tag on it. I reformatted and did a clean install and now have all the user acounts properly working, file sharing permissions, privacy settings of user profiles, compression, etc. By your company caption I am assuming you are using this for business with multiple users. I would recommend XP Pro retail version, especially if you are using a laptop. You will need to create your own backup system since your OEM probably created a partition with a drive image copy on it and this will be dismantled in the reformatting process.

I wish to remove to remove the Messenger component but not altogether obliterate it. How can I get it to appear in the add/remove programs/Windows components? After removing “hide” in the registry, it still does not show itself.

      Hey, Dave1

Thanks for the response! Pretty funny!

Which programs am I running that are 16 bit? I agree with you on Win2000, but 98SE? That is why I switched. I never had as many problems as I did with 98SE than with Win95, XP, & Me combinned (well, maybe with the Me is exaggerating!) I’ve tried to crash this XP and haven’t. It’s just this OEM version is BS. I will NEVER again buy a unit with pre-installed OS. I prefer a laptop (really no need for a desktop anymore) but they are tougher to build. Thanks for the back up on OEM vs Retail.
