DaveA ~

This is the same Fujitsu Lifebook, but it was the improper and incomplete install of the OEM version of XPH with which I encountered the oddities in the OS.
Pro had available drivers for the Lucent Tech Soft AMR and I really doubted any change would occur, but for the hell of it I tried a few different drivers for that hardware and still no change.
The aforementioned included the media from Fujitsu that included the modem drivers and the drivers from the Fujitsu Service Download site as well as host of other Lucent/Agere modem drivers available. I generally prefer not to use the generic driver versions XP has to offer as they often have difficulty in detecting a dial tone.

Dave ~

The first thing I did was check to see if the modem speaker was enabled as you outlined above before I began adjusting the volume slide/off in modem properties.

Hi!

I have sound, just not during connection.

As it turns out, the OS was corrupted. Fujitsu confirmed this and after some lengthy discussion up the hierarchy, they subsequently agreed to NextDayAir me a full retail version of WinXPH free of charge. I will probably install that on a rarely used Win98SE desktop tomorrow.

The last few days, this laptop seemed to be deteriorating exponentially. Along with endless error messages of being unable to locate critical files, the cursor began moving on its own, windows would flash like a strobe, the taskbar would completely disappear, CD and floppy would fail to read and/or write, files would randomly empty themselves (or fail to show contents) in addition to the previous problems with the desktop and inability to move icons or drag & drop.

I am glad my lazy butt backed up everything just in time! I would have liked to figure out what was going on for the sake of understanding & knowledge, but I just went ahead and reformatted to NTFS with a clean new XP Pro install and everything is purring like a Porsche!!

Thanks, everyone, for the attempts to help!

• in reply to: Taskbar Icons (XP) #595426

Dave ~

This is an hp photosmart 1215 and the only item plugged in with a USB. This was not an issue when the unit was running Win98SE. I installed XPH and the icon appeared on the tray. The printer is never unplugged from the unit. When I click on the icon, nothing comes up but ‘Safely Remove Hardware’.

Is it because of the new OS I can’t unplug it w/o notification?

Does it stay in the tray as long as it reads a USB plug is connected?

• in reply to: Taskbar Icons (XP) #595413

Dave ~

I have the same printer but this “Safety Remove Hardware” icon never appeared before. As I despise junk in my system tray, is there a way to remove it w/o doing a registry hack?

Also, I was hoping that since you are moderator you might know why the formatting of my signature is missing and the formatting I used in your name in my reply is missing as well.

• in reply to: Taskbar Icons (XP) #595213

Hi, DaveA !

I have a few units with XPH and one that I just installed it on has the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon is tray. Now, I have never seen this before. What do you mean by “USB device is attached that needs to de-attached before unplugging.”? Unattach the USB connection before unplugging the power to the USB device? Unplugging the system?? Other? scratch

Please advise & expound.
Thanks, Dave .

• in reply to: ?Transfer to Outlook XP? (XP Home 5.1/2600) #595209

roseHi, MJ!

Why am I asking you?? confused Well, per the previous posts, you indicated “OE is preinstalled on every windows machine and it is a required component for Outlook “. I am not simply switching to another e-mail client on the same system. I have a unit that had OE in WIN98SE: I backed it up, reformatted, and installed WinXPH. I configured OL as the e-mail client and wish to just put the saved addresses, folders, and e-mail messages into the client. I thought it would be simple!

I understand the name of ‘Outlook 2002’. I had that originally, but to avoid probelms, I edited my posts to ‘Outlook XP’ since I encountered confusion at other BBS with the same submission.

I personally do not use MS e-mail clients due to the ease of their inherent exploitability. I was under the misguided notion that OL was an e-mail client that was the same as OE but with more bells and whistles, but that is incorrect, yes? (This is another family member’s unit.)

Now, I followed the directions from the MS OE site (which was the same as tomstersdams) in backing up all OE data to be transferred:

avx is a folders file;
csv is the address book back up;
iaf is the mail account settings;
and we know what the dbx files are.

I did not use any wizards.

So, MJ, my guess is that I would open OE in XP, insert the backed-up files, then transfer to OL via import/export wizard – is this what you would do??

shrugPlease advise…

MJ ~

Tomsterdam’s instructions at http://www.tomsterdam.com/insideOE/backup/bu_simple.htm%5B/url%5D, the 2nd half of number 3 are very unclear. It tells you where not to save dbx, but never says where to save them to.

Also the site comes up empty on a search for avx files. OE6 address book is not wab, but avx. Not one mention of it on this site.

If OE is on XP Home already, why on earth would one use Outlook XP???

Please advise.

• in reply to: ?Transfer to Outlook XP? (XP Home 5.1/2600) #594521

The new system has OL XP. Are you saying to install OE on the new system? Then transfer the files to OE, then import form OE to OL XP?? This seems like a cumbersome routine. What about the other files, all of which are from OE?

I am not getting any errors. I have already backed up the csv, iaf, dbx and avx files. Tomsterdam does not indicate how to get OE files into Oulook XP.

Are you saying I cannot transfer the files from OE to OL??

Please advise.
Thanx!

JR~

I am not sure what you should do. What exactly are your intentions? Backing HD? Saving work? Pertinent info? Programs/ Stuff?

Many may indicate the inefficiency of, but it is certainly very simple to back up to CD and update regularly as the need arises. CD’s are so darn cheap, you can burn ’em and toss ’em once updated or otherwise no longer needed. I used to use Easy CD Creator for data CD’s, but Roxio’s drivers are consistently beleaguering my system, so I simply drop whatever into a folder and then use XP to burn ’em. (XP’s burning software is licensed from Roxio anyway). Put software you downloaded or don’t have on media already on one CD, drivers and updates on another, and personal stuff, work, or your “Brittany Spears pics” on yet another.

As for backing up your whole system, well, I have used PowerQuest’s Drive Image, but I believe it to be a waste of resources, and frankly, time. I am comparing the plethora of reasonably priced Firewire or USB 2.0 pocket drives. You can easily justify the few hundred smackers in your time alone if you’ve had the pleasure of crashing and losing everything and starting from scratch. meltdown

They are the fastest, easiest, and trouble free fashion of saving/backing up all your data. If you happen to have a June 30 2002 issue of PC Magazine, check out page 126-127. Or try http://www.pcmag.com/article/0,2997,s=1474…;a=27446,00.asp and click ‘next’ after reviewing each item.

I am sorry I couldn’t be of more direct help.

Best advice so far, but already tried that and even went and checked all the other desktop folders and reset them. Nothing changed, and no, there are no shortcuts at all in any of them. I do not use them.

Chin scratcher, eh?

MJ ~

I am well aware that my desktop looks like an explorer window. This desktop does not allow me to perform any drag & drop nor does it allow moving the icons.

There is nothing in the display properties or desktop customizing features that affect this. That is all old hat. I am pretty familiar with Windows OS’s but this is a quirky corker. I did nothing other than install the latest version of Ontrack’s SystemSuite which is touted by WPOR & PC World as the best utility available. I ran the defrag & disk fixer and then restarted and, well, this is what I got. I uninstalled — nada–system restore from several points of time – -nada. I am not yet convinced that the software had anything to do with it, but as a matter of chain-of-events, I followed protocol for reparation.

So far, no one experienced enough in XP has read this and had a remedy or this is a very unique situation to XP or any MS OS for that matter. You cannot create an explorer “desktop” with out some knowledgeable hacking.

I don’t know…..I am thinking of dumping XP Home, reformatting and installing Pro in NTFS unless someone can offer a reasonable fix. I hate resorting to the “reinstall” option alleged “support” personnel are always so quick to provide.

<———this is how I kinda feel right now!

I installed Ontrack SystemSuite 4.x and now my darn desktop is screwed up. I have this pane running up the left side of the screen, my recycle bin is gone, and I can no longer drag files into folders on the desktop. I uninstalled the software and ran system restore, but it was unsuccessful. I have a screenshot of the desktop if anyone is curious to see it.

Anyone?? Bueller…??

MerC~

chklnks.exe is a garbage program as far as a registry utility. I am looking for a program that is able to check all strings and links to identify, properly, and remove such. I tried Ontrack SystemSuite, but now my desktop is screwed (see post in XP forum).

What would you do?
