    • in reply to: Good Windows Media Player AVI Codec? #1257098

Used the K-Lite full as suggested by Dr Who, but the MPC displays the videos in such a way that almost look like partly-colorized B&W film or appear like negative film images.

Directory > ‘Properties’ > ‘Security’ : this is one of the areas I was having trouble entering an object or user.

I haven’t been able to, but shouldn’t I be able to enter “\[parents.computer][parents.user.account.name]” to an explicit Security Advanced setting? Or will those Security settings only work for local resources (as opposed to network resources)?

    • in reply to: Good Windows Media Player AVI Codec? #1253904

      Hi, Clint ~

Removed & reinstalled Media Player 11, moved back to 10, then back to 11. AVI files cannot be played in any of them & all other media files play OK. The sample AVI file in the MS link you provided played the audio, but did not render the video & instead displayed the standard error message.

Divx & Xvid codecs did not resolve the issue, but I need to try the Cinepak & Indeo codecs.

      Hi, Malc,

      1) All home PCs are in the same XP workgroup, “WORKGROUP”.

      2) No problems accessing the Shared Folder, but we’re not using that at all as we are doing more than transferring files – the goal is to access & have full control of the workstation as a mapped network resource, not RDC.

      3) I have shared the child’s PC C: root drive & can access & view it OK across the network as a mapped logical drive & subdirectories

      4) Turning off Simple File Sharing & enabling non-default Access Level 3, 4 or 5 may work & will try that. But the intention is to only give one of the parents’ workstations access & full control, not to everyone who may access the network.

    • in reply to: Enabling Full Access to Children's Computer #1253758

My account does exist on the child’s PC.

    • in reply to: Enabling Full Access to Children's Computer #1253717

      Thank for the reply, Joe.

The workstations can see each other when pinging the IP fine and I can access & see the contents of the C: drive after I’ve mapped a drive from my machine to child’s machine. I can then click on “C:Documents and Settings” to see the Users, then click on the child’s account directory, encounter “Access denied”.

The child’s account a my account are both Computer Admin accounts. Even if I try to enable security settings from Properties on the child’s machine, I still encounter “Access denied”.

My networking experience has been only logical drive mapping on business servers & workstations to access shares, directories, programs, files, etc. and then as it only relates to our business software, but this personal home networking project is escaping me.

Is anyone aware of a guide detailing the setup for a private home computer to access & have full control of another home computer on the same home network?

      Good, Doc, thanks!

I’ve narrowed it down to Shadow Protect & True Image. Paramount is the ability to boot to optical medium or an external hard drive w/ the program utility on it to simply restore to previously configured state.

I’m also considering cloning the HD to another notebook HD so if the drive goes weider kaputt, I can just swap it out. Anyone recommend from personal experience any notebook HD cloning apps?

      Scott ~

In your use w/ the Ghost, can you take the image stored on a DVD, insert it into the DVD tray of a non-formatted, new HD w/ no OS, boot to it and have the entire system that was saved restored?

    • in reply to: Build System Restore DVD #1117737

      Hi, Al!

Acronis True Image I’ve never had luck with in th past – typically plagued w/ corruption issues when trying to restore, so I have no confidence in it. I’m not looking for anything free, just someting reliable & proven to work consistently. I haven’t heard of Shadow Protect – I’ll look into it. Is this how the Dell & HP/Compaq images made? You might have guessed that I am tinkering w/ Vista & need to restore.

    • in reply to: Copy User Profile (Vista Business) #1105528

OK, here is an easy way to do this that I’ve successfully tested with Vista Business & Windows Server 2008 Standard:

      – Delete all the accounts except the Admin with all the settings, Desktop, config, etc. the way you want them
      – Turn off the UAC in Control Panel > User Accounts > reboot
      – Create two new user accounts, one for using to login (let’s call it ‘Setup’) since you can’t copy the Admin profile while you are in it & one to copy the Admin profile to (let’s call it ‘NewUser’)
      – Logon to each of the new ‘Setup’ & ‘NewUser’ accounts to initialize them & then log off
      – Login as ‘Setup’
      – Open Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings
      – Click ‘Advanced’ tab > ‘Settings’ button under ‘User Profiles’
      – Select the Admin profile > click ‘Copy To…’ button
      – Click ‘Browse’ button > navigate to ‘NewUser’ (C:UsersNewUser’)
      – Click ‘OK’ > ‘Yes’ to ‘Confirm Copy’ > ‘OK’ > ‘OK’
      – Logoff ‘Setup’ > login to ‘NewUser’

A new profile is now created which is identical in feel, look, settings & config to the Admin account. thumbup

Gotcha. OK, will follow the same protocol as done in XP – thanks, guys

    • in reply to: W2K8S Admin Account (W2K8S SP1) #1104718

That’s what I’m wondering – the Server edition is supposed to have the better base code. The Windows server editions have them enabled by default & am under the impression they are normally used as root, but I’m not sure since I’ve never really used Windows Server OSs.

    • in reply to: Unable to Snap-in ‘Group Policy’ #1103408

      1) .exe…….the simplest things are oft overlooked – what a bonehead (me)…thanks.
      2) The goal is to shut down the shutdown event tracker, so yes, I guess I could – or should….thank you again.

Joe, are you using W2K8S as a workstation?

    • in reply to: Undesired Date Correction (Word 2007) #1097101

      Hi, Mac ~

In Word 2007, Insert > Quick Parts > Field > CreateDate (or SaveDate or PrintDate), yet the date comes out as today’s date or ‘XXX 0, 0000’, literally.

The metadata may not be there as Hans noted that WP documents may or may not store this info & Word may not see it because it has to convert the document from WP format to Word format, so likely will always see today as the create date.

    • in reply to: Undesired Date Correction (Word 2007) #1097047

Nice idea…I tried the Word 2003 Viewer & was even able to scare up an old Word 97 Viewer, but no luck w/ either – date field remained intact.

Hans pointed out that these may be old converted Word Perfect docs, so they may explain it. I suppose we will have to rely on the property settings & use that date as the best reference.

Thanks, Gentlemen, for all your help. smile
