Do you also get a lot of “Can’t load or find that page?” I supposed that my very similar problems were my server and line conjestion. I usually have to do a ctr-alt-del to get out of it. And then reboot or sometimes a reset works to clear the logjam.

Lief I am using Win98 IE5 on a Pentium. Loaded a 56K modem dialup thinking that would help but it didn’t. Still suspect server.

I usually buy them at Office Depot – local office/computer supply store. But I would bet that it would be just as easy on line since you do have to send them the exact model number to get one that fits.

They cost about the same as a cheap KB but mine has saved me several times.

After my cat dumped a cola on a keyboard I started buying the plastic skins for KB. Works great for keeping things out from under the keys. Even so I did try turning and shaking.

Well it is working now so I have time to look for my special layout.

I keep a spreadsheet file open and when someone posts an interesting url I copy it to a line add a brief description and save it to go check it out later. I don’t want to interrupt my lounge time. I would never get through all the posts if I ran off to look at every link.

BTW I like your site too. You and LadyWolf have the best home pages. Both very helpful ones. Suggest anyone who hasn’t taken a look at them should add them to their “check it out list”

Tx Always wondered why MS didn’t offer one for accessabilty. Glad they finally got around to it. Now I just have to upgrade to 2000. Meanwhile I will check out the link first chance I get.

No battery in kb. Kb from old system didn’t work when I first tried it. did work when I tried it the second time. Made me suspect not my kb. Tried my kb again and it is working. All of which seems to point to loose connection. No reason it should develop a problem. There is no stress on the cable and the back of the tower is located so nothing can bump the connections. Maybe just vibrations?

But this whole machine has been straight out of hades. I would have returned it to vendor except he is in jail for computer fraud. No Joke.

Anyway IF it goes down again I will open the case and see if there is any obvious loose parts to the connection. I don’t even know if it has internal cables or boards or what. Hopefully I won’t have to find out.

Those look neat but I can’t copy them to my `check these out’ list.

    • in reply to: FP Express download? (N/A) #548724

MuHaHaHa — Front Page Express Help — ROLF

This is too serious for smilies.

This is absolutely the worst help file I have ever seen. Four pages saying that FPE does all these things and not one instruction on how to do any of it. I think FPE is a teaser to get you to upgrade to full Front Page at whatever cost. I haven’t tried the MS support on line. Let me know if you have any luck.

OK You are all talking brands here. Does it matter much which store? I have heard that some of the chain stores buy one brand but install cheaper internal parts. Is this one of those urban fantasies? Or something to be on the lookout for?

Tx Ian I can never find anything in MS Support. Appreciate the link.

Instructions bring back memories of the old 5+floppies. Insert A in drive D, remove A, insert B, remove B, reinsert A etc…..

    • in reply to: CD-Rs and CD-RWs #547871

Yep. To answer Lief at the same time I did clean them. Yes, I do have a cat and it is amazing how much cat fur gets inside the tower box. But vacuum, blower, cleaning discs no help.

Now the power cable I will make a note of. This one is almost a year old. If it goes soon I will try replacing the cables too. Although I think I did that with the last one as I usually use whatever comes with the package.

Anyway you people sure pointed out a lot of pitfalls about using recordable ones. Thanks.

I don’t even use my CD player. Maybe a couple of hours a week and that is straight music cds. And it is a player only. But they seem to have a six month life. I’ve gone thru four of them in the last two years. They either stop recognizing there is a disc or even worse feed sparodic info to the computer. Only answer I have found is trash em. Two of them were still under warranty which helped.

And I saw a note that you can set your preferences to have them delivered in plain text. GL

    • in reply to: Paper Jam problem needs solution #545635

My HP is a much cheaper model than yours and had I known what a pain removing paper jams would be I would not have purchased it.

I have a theory if its broke I can’t break it much worse. The last time mine refused to reset itself I poked around at all the movable pieces. GENTLY. The bar that is flat across the paper and lifts to stop the feed was stuck in the up position. Hope your is something that simple.

To help cut down on paper jams be sure the paper is right side up the way it comes out of the package.

    • in reply to: IE Icon on Desktop (5.01) #543571

Alternate method sit a four year old down with nothing on the desktop but the IE icon and the pointer for the mouse. What he did I do not know but the icon disappeared and IE still works from the menu.
