hello Merc Welcome back. Hope you had a nice vacation or whatever.

Is Zone Log Analyzer only available with ZonePro or can I find it somewhere else?

And how come your home page always knows it is me when I sneak in there?

Tx all once again I get confirmation of what I supposed was the case.

After four days of not being able to connect with Norton to upgrade the virus definitions, I got frustrated and gave up. Four days later I tried again and everything worked fine. Just love these intermittent, unidentified, self correcting glitches.

    • in reply to: AT&T-anyone familiar? #583197

I wouldn’t use AT&T if it was the only one available. But my reason is the blasted advertising saturation. I get a phone solicitation every ten days and a live person walking in my door at least once a month. Not to mention the web popups. I have even lodged complaints with AT&T customer service but they tell me the solicitors are not AT&T employees. Seems to me they could save enough money to lower their rates if they cut back on the advertising.

BTW why is it that there is only one ISP server more expensive than MSN and it is Verizon (my local telephone company). Why does the phone company need a connection fee?

I decided to go with a local connection, keep the money at home and support a small business. Only to discover he is nothing but a go between. His “server” is really some national company.

But in my search I did run across a suggestion to help cut down the disconnects:
Run IE in the background set to check for mail every 10 minutes. Most of the servers have an automatic 20min with no activity disconnect.

Do I need both ZoneAlarm AND Norton? I have been having trouble getting Norton to load and update and I am wondering if I really need to.

My system is an antiquated 85/5.5 dialup.

Tx Peter I haven’t looked at SendKeys at all. Will give that some study in the near future.

At least I now I know I haven’t missed anything obvious — this time.

      Tx Charlotte

All I want to do is tell it to go find a ID# and update that entry. But I don’t want to have to type the ID number in every time. I want to bring it from a cell in an Excel spreadsheet. Right now I simply copy the cell in Excel, move to Access, Open Find and Paste. Then I run a command button which does the update. I would like to incorporate the “Find” into the beginning of the update code.

I looked at the recordsets info and it is way to complicated for me. Actually “seek” seems to be sort of what I want, but it looks as if it wants to work with tables and I want to search in a form.

Currently I am using the old Macro writer from Win3.1. I have drug that along with me through every windows upgrade. I can use it to write one macro which spans both Excel and Access. Guess I will stick with that. Just thought maybe I was missing something in the Access codes. Still seems like there should be an easy way to tell it to go Find “paste in variable” and
      update it.

If I had know you had to be a programmer to make Access work for you I would have stuck with my old PCButton shareware database.

      Anyway Thanks again…

I am looking at Dell. I figure if it is good enough for Woody it is good enough for me.

Tx everyone Now if I can just convince the tax man that I need to upgrade.

I wouldn’t say this system is old but the tech who built it is out of jail again. He only served 3 of 5 (bank fraud). Apparently he didn’t know computers as well as HE thought he did.

    • in reply to: CD drive gone bonkers #578294

Tx Lief Does RAM fail in increments? Or all at once? Is it possible that it is just not enough to handle the work load? If it is insufficient to handle everything on the computer would that cause a problem with the keyboard and/or the cd?

Of course I bought cheap But I thought Creative was supposed to be reliable.

“original build quality censored” Sometime when you get bored with life Email me and I will send you the Saga of the Bookbox Computer.

Maybe I will just downgrade this one to personal use and buy a new one for the business. I am considering a newer version of the Dell Woody bought a couple of years ago. If it is good enough for him it should be good enough for me.

TX to you both. Built in obsolescence — whether you use it or not it wears out one day after the warranty expires.

This is the third one in five years. What really bugs me is I know people who use theirs constantly with fewer problems.

My keyboard has also started doing intermittent freeze ups.

Could it be memory related? Do those Ram chips wear out? This is an old machine 3GPentiumยฎ and 80M RAM.

TX ! Cleaning has helped before when there was skipping or scratchy sound

But this time it is sticking its tongue out at me. The drawer keeps opening and closing for no reason. I put a disc in it and close and the light blinks then it opens and in a few seconds it closes blinks opens closes etc. After a half dozen times or so it suddenly decided to run the disc. Doesn’t matter if it is a data or music disc. Doesn’t matter if there is anything else open or not. Doing a reboot didn’t fix it one time but did another.

If I try to get to it from Explorer or Run it says “the device is not ready”. But when I check the device manager it says the CD is operating properly. Checked the driver and reloaded the Wn98 default driver for this Creative CD which is what it has always used.

I have not knowingly made any changes to the system.

So what is the average life of a CD drive? Do they decay if they don’t get used? I don’t use the thing three times a week. And I have only had this one a little over a year.

    • in reply to: Colorado (HP) tape drive to be shot at dawn #572045

Hope I haven’t missed Dawn I will line my old Colorado up beside yours. Mine seemed to refuse to work because I put too much data on it and it didn’t have enough room left to build an index.

Anyway I went to Jazz and now they don’t market the tapes I need for the model I have. I just can’t keep up with the changing technology.

    • in reply to: Visible mouse clicks #571731

hello I like the idea although we might get tired of it if it sounded every time we clicked the mouse. The only things I have been able to find are programs or things like JAVA scripts that assign the sound to the item being clicked. Which are way beyond my expertise. I am really surprised MerC hasn’t got some little goodie. If I run across anything I’ll be back.

    • in reply to: Project Gutenberg #569850

In my family we give a dollar a year for birthdays. I can’t believe I had to give my daughter 38 exclamation Well, she is almost old enough to start being useful again.

Guess you will have to hold on to yours while he ripens a few more years. Or farm him out to some sweet young thing and let her worry about the cultivating and weeding for a while. But hang in there grandkids can’t be too far off. And Oh My can they be Fun.

    • in reply to: Project Gutenberg #569408

      hello Samantha

I own a bookstore and I have never undersood the urge people have to hoard books. Especially when they are hoarding ones I want to read grin ie ScienceFiction/Fantasy. Even before opened the store it took the library and two bookstores to keep me in reading material. I only maintain a dozen or so reference books. I very rarely reread. There just isn’t time enough in two lifetimes to read all the things I want to read much less to spend time rereading.

Ummm…..how old is that first born? Under 7 they are too young. Between 7 and 10 they are good help. Between 10 and 20 they are useless. Between 20 and 40 they are too busy.
