Sorry about misleading you on Merc’s site. I sure thought I saw one there. Maybe it was Scotterbot. Anyway it has been too long. I can’t find any of the ones I tried before I settled on BarClock. And now I have lost BarClock with my old harddrive. Maybe I will try Outlook again although I didn’t like it when I tried it before. Do suggest you post your problem in the Outlook board.

But here are a couple of links I am investigating to find a new one

      http://www.5star-shareware.com/Business/Cl…Reminders1.html%5B/url%5D

and this one just for fun

I had forgotten that the poor calendar/alarm was one of the reasons I gave up on Works. You might look for a BarClock program to replace it. That was what I did when I was still using Works. Actually I still use the barclock in place of Outlook. Unfortunately it is a really old shareware and has disappeared from availability. Mercrumudgeon has a good one in his site.

nope I am with you up to the saved automatically into the file. But no matter how I opened Excel (and I do get the old settings when I click the .xlb file itself) if I make any changes to the toolbars I get the message quoted above. I have tried removing the .xlb files completely. Tried various combinations of my name because this is a new install maybe it can’t figure out who I am. Saving does work on the workbooks themselves but not on the Excel customizing changes.

Oh well I am trying to use the keyboard more and the mouse less anyway. And I was only going to put somethings back that I had taken off to make it smaller. Now I that I found the ^7 shortcut to hide it I don’t care how crowded it gets.

      Tx anyway

There isn’t any other file or folder it might be referring to is there? The windows folder and the documents folder are not read only.

Also look for any *.xlw files. If someone saved a workspace with the file in it every time it opens XL looks for that file.

Is the test that AVG does during boot the complete test or do I need to run that seperately?

How long does it take to get the updates downloaded? Can I leave the computer running and have it do the update during the night? If so does it disconnect after it is finished?

      this new “Percussion Maintenance” technique

[/indent] Fraid you are mistaken there, Bruce, that is the oldest most tried and true maintenance technique there is. The next best method qets real high tech — get a hammer.

      Tx WyllyWylly.

I will have to contemplate that for a while. Also see what my ISP has to say, he was real helpful before he got my money.

Some dumb blondes didn’t get the fun of being a blonde. Hence the dumb redhead questions.

OK another redhead question. I know you save our graphics here in the lounge for us or I never would have the neat sig and user pic I do. But If I want to use a sig or pic somewhere else it tells me it must be saved to the net first. Question is Where do I save to the net? Do I have to buy a domain to do that? My ISP says I have a few mg of Personal Memory. Is that probably just for the email or can I possibly save there? I have an email to them asking but no answer yet the lounge is faster.

Possible power interrupt? I had a similar occurance when there was a power flicker which was enough to cause the computer to attempt to reboot and there was a non system disk in the drive. I happened to be watching when it happened or I would have been really stymied.

I don’t wanna be at the cutting edge sigh I just want equipment that will last more than two or three years and still be able to transfer data to the replacement.

Guess I will go see what this “ALIEN” outfit is.

I did manage to bypass 8-tracks grin But then I am still playing vinyls.

Merc you said not to bother with a DVD writer I am hoping that means that you don’t expect DVD to replace CDs. Every time I wait until a given technology gets well established before I purchase it, they promptly replace it with something new. I am referring here to use as a backup system. I thought I was being wise to go to Colorado External; Outdated by Jazz Zip; Outdated by CD/w. I haven’t gone CD/w yet. Actually I am thinking external Harddrive might be better.
Edited because I went back and reread you post and am willing to bet you will recommend the Hardrive which you did mention.

When I asked this question for a different term these came up. Must have been in scuttlebutt then because I can’t find the thread now so try:

My fav is Foldoc but they each seem to have different strengths.

Hey all – Tx for all the good tips.

Another redhead question.. How do I stop a popup ad or site from taking over IE? I don’t mind the popups themselves but this time it went too far. It made itself my home page and added two entries to my favorites menu. Even after I changed my home page back the next time I logged on it took over again. I seem to have gotten rid of it but I am steamed.

ZA didn’t even twitch. I am supposing that Outlook or one of the ones that stops popups would catch this?

      So with W98 at 56K I need:
a virus checker like Norton or AVG to catch things attached to incoming.
a firewall like ZA or Outpost to stop unauthorized connections
a popup arrest like Oulpost or Proxomitron(?) for the ads

At this rate I will have more security programs than operating programs. Now don’t anyone fall off their chair laughing but how come IE Security doesn’t do all this?
